1. This is a declaration from Allah and His Messenger to those idol-worshipers you made promises to.

2. You may travel freely in the land for four months, but know that you cannot escape Allah, and that Allah will surely humble those who reject Him.

3. And this is an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to all people on the day of the great pilgrimage: Allah is free from any obligations toward the idol-worshipers, and so is His Messenger. So if you repent, it will be better for you. But if you turn away, remember that you cannot escape Allah. Give those who disbelieve the news of a painful punishment.

4. But this does not apply to the idol-worshipers you made agreements with, who have not broken their promises or supported anyone against you. Complete your agreements with them until the end of their terms. Allah loves those who are mindful of Him.

5. When the sacred months have passed, fight the idol-worshipers wherever you find them. Capture them, surround them, and wait for them at every place they hide. But if they repent, pray regularly, and give charity, then let them go freely. Allah is forgiving and merciful.

6. If any idol-worshiper asks you for protection, protect him until he hears Allah's words. Then take him safely to a secure place, because these are people who do not know.

7. How can the idol-worshipers have any agreement with Allah and His Messenger, except those you made promises with at the Sacred Mosque? As long as they keep their promises to you, keep your promises to them. Allah loves those who are mindful of Him.

8. How can you trust them? If they gain power over you, they will not respect any agreement or promise. They please you with their words, but their hearts refuse, and most of them are disobedient.

9. They traded Allah's verses for a small price, and they turned people away from His path. What they did was truly evil.

10. They do not respect any agreement or promise toward a believer. Those people are the ones who cross all limits.

11. But if they repent, pray regularly, and give charity, then they become your brothers in faith. We clearly explain these verses for people who understand.

12. If they break their promises after making agreements, and insult your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief — they have no respect for promises — so perhaps they will stop.

13. Won't you fight against people who broke their promises, planned to drive out the Messenger, and attacked you first? Are you afraid of them? Allah deserves your fear more, if you truly believe.

14. Fight them — Allah will punish them through your hands, disgrace them, help you overcome them, and heal the hearts of believing people.

15. And He will remove the anger from their hearts. Allah accepts the repentance of whoever He wills. Allah is Knowing and Wise.

16. Did you think you would be left alone, before Allah shows who among you truly struggles and does not take anyone other than Allah, His Messenger, and the believers as close friends? Allah knows everything you do.

17. It is not right for those who worship others besides Allah to take care of Allah's mosques, while openly admitting their disbelief. Their good deeds have become worthless, and they will stay in the Fire forever.

18. The ones who maintain Allah's mosques are only those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, pray regularly, give charity, and fear no one but Allah. These are the ones who may truly be guided.

19. Do you think giving water to pilgrims, and caring for the Sacred Mosque, is equal to believing in Allah and the Last Day, and struggling in Allah's way? They are not equal in Allah's sight. Allah does not guide those who do wrong.

20. Those who believe, migrate, and struggle in Allah's way with their wealth and their lives, hold a higher rank with Allah. They are the ones who succeed.

21. Their Lord gives them good news of mercy from Him, His approval, and Gardens filled with everlasting joy.

22. They will stay there forever. With Allah is a wonderful reward.

23. Believers, do not take your fathers or your brothers as close friends if they prefer disbelief over faith. Whoever among you does this — they are the ones who do wrong.

24. Say, "If your fathers, your children, your brothers, your spouses, your relatives, the wealth you have earned, the trade you fear will fail, and the homes you love — are dearer to you than Allah, His Messenger, and struggling in His way — then wait until Allah brings about His decision. Allah does not guide those who disobey."

25. Allah has helped you in many places — and on the day of Hunayn, when you felt proud of your large numbers, but they didn't help you at all. The earth felt tight and narrow around you, despite its vastness, and you turned back, running away.

26. Then Allah sent down calmness upon His Messenger and the believers, and He sent down soldiers you couldn't see. He punished those who disbelieved — that's what the disbelievers deserved.

27. After that, Allah accepts the repentance of whoever He wills. Allah is forgiving and full of mercy.

28. Believers, those who worship idols are unclean, so don't let them come near the Sacred Mosque after this year. If you're worried about poverty, Allah will soon make you rich from His generosity, if He wills. Allah knows everything and is wise.

29. Fight those who don't believe in Allah or the Last Day, who don't forbid what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, and who don't follow the true religion — from among the People of the Book — until they pay the tax in person, in a state of humility.

30. The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allah," and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allah." These are just words they say with their mouths, copying what disbelievers said before them. May Allah destroy them! How can they be so deceived?

31. They took their rabbis and monks — and the Messiah, son of Mary — as lords besides Allah. But they were commanded only to worship one God. There is no god except Him. Glory to Him, far above what they associate with Him!

32. They want to put out Allah's light with their words, but Allah refuses anything except to complete His light — even if the disbelievers hate it.

33. He is the One Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the true religion, to make it victorious over all other religions — even if those who worship idols hate it.

34. Believers, many rabbis and monks wrongly take people's money and block others from Allah's path. Those who store up gold and silver and don't spend it in Allah's way — give them the news of a painful punishment.

35. On the Day when their gold and silver will be heated in the fire of Hell, their foreheads, sides, and backs will be burned with it. They'll be told, "This is what you stored up for yourselves — now taste what you saved!"

36. Truly, the number of months with Allah is twelve months, written in Allah's Book since the day He created the heavens and the earth. Four of these months are sacred — that's the right religion. So don't wrong yourselves during these months. Fight all those who worship idols, just as they all fight you, and know that Allah is with those who are mindful of Him.

37. Delaying sacred months is just another way of increasing disbelief. Those who disbelieve are led astray by it. They allow it one year and forbid it another, just to match the number of months Allah has made sacred, making lawful what Allah has forbidden. Their evil deeds seem attractive to them, but Allah doesn't guide those who disbelieve.

38. Believers, what's wrong with you? When you're asked to go out and struggle for Allah's cause, you cling heavily to the earth. Do you prefer this worldly life over the Hereafter? But the enjoyment of this life, compared to the Hereafter, is very small.

39. If you don't go out, He will punish you painfully and replace you with other people — and you won't harm Him at all. Allah has power over everything.

40. Even if you don't help him, Allah already helped him, when the disbelievers drove him out — he was one of two people in the cave. He said to his friend, "Don't be sad, Allah is with us." Then Allah sent calmness down upon him, supported him with forces you couldn't see, and made the disbelievers' words the lowest, while Allah's word is the highest. Allah is mighty and wise.

41. Go out, whether you feel light or heavy, and struggle with your money and yourselves for Allah's cause. This is better for you, if only you knew.

42. If it had been an easy gain and a short journey, they would have followed you. But the distance seemed too far for them. They'll swear by Allah, "If we could, we would have gone with you." They destroy themselves with their lies, and Allah knows they're lying.

43. Allah has forgiven you! Why did you let them stay behind before it became clear who was truthful and who was lying?

44. Those who truly believe in Allah and the Last Day don't ask your permission to struggle with their money and lives. Allah knows those who are mindful of Him.

45. Only those who don't believe in Allah and the Last Day ask your permission. Their hearts are full of doubts, and they're stuck in their uncertainty.

46. If they really wanted to go out, they would have prepared for it. But Allah disliked their going, so He held them back, and they were told, "Stay behind with those who stay."

47. If they had gone out with you, they would have brought nothing but confusion and trouble, trying to stir up problems among you. And some of you would have listened to them. Allah knows who does wrong.

48. They tried to cause trouble before, and turned things upside down for you, until the truth came and Allah's command became clear — even though they hated it.

49. Some of them say, "Give me permission to stay behind, and don't put me into trouble." But they've already fallen into trouble — and Hell surely surrounds those who disbelieve.

50. If something good happens to you, it bothers them. But if you face hardship, they say, "We took precautions earlier," and they turn away happily.

51. Say, "Nothing will ever happen to us except what Allah has already written for us. He is our Protector, and believers should trust in Allah."

52. Say, "Are you waiting for anything to happen to us, except one of two good things? But we are waiting for Allah to punish you Himself, or through our hands. So wait — we're waiting along with you."

53. Say, "Whether you give willingly or unwillingly, it won't be accepted from you, because you've become people who disobey."

54. The only reason their offerings aren't accepted, is because they rejected Allah and His Messenger, they come to prayer lazily, and they give charity unwillingly.

55. So don't be impressed by their wealth or their children. Allah only wants to punish them through these things in this life, and for their souls to expire while they're still disbelievers.

56. They swear by Allah that they're truly with you, but they're not with you — they're just people who are afraid.

57. If they could find a safe place, caves, or somewhere to hide, they would rush there immediately.

58. Some of them criticize you about charity. If they're given some, they're happy, but if they're not given anything, they get angry.

59. If only they had been happy with what Allah and His Messenger gave them, and said, "Allah is enough for us. Allah will soon give us from His kindness, and so will His Messenger. We truly hope only in Allah."

60. Charity is meant for the poor, the needy, those who collect it, those whose hearts need to be won over, to free slaves, to help people in debt, for Allah's cause, and for travelers. This is a duty set by Allah, and Allah is All-Knowing, Wise.

61. Some of them hurt the Prophet by saying, "He's all ears." Say, "He listens for your own good. He believes in Allah and trusts the believers. And he's a mercy for those among you who believe." But those who hurt Allah's Messenger will have a painful punishment.

62. They swear by Allah to you, hoping to please you. But if they were true believers, Allah and His Messenger deserve more that they should please Him.

63. Don't they know that whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger will have the Fire of Hell, staying there forever? That is the greatest disgrace.

64. The hypocrites worry that a Chapter might come down about them, clearly showing what's hidden in their hearts. Say, "Go ahead and joke — but Allah will reveal exactly what you're afraid of."

65. And if you ask them, they'll say, "We were just talking and playing around!" Say, "Were you joking about Allah, His Verses, and His Messenger?"

66. Don't make excuses — you've disbelieved after believing. Even if We forgive some of you, We will punish others because they were guilty.

67. Hypocrite men and women are all alike — they encourage what's wrong, stop what's right, and refuse to give charity. They forgot Allah, so He forgot them. Truly, the hypocrites are the disobedient ones.

68. Allah has promised the hypocrite men and women, and the disbelievers, the fire of Hell — they'll stay there forever. It's enough for them. Allah has rejected them, and they'll have a lasting punishment.

69. You're just like those before you — they were stronger than you, had more money and children, and enjoyed their share of worldly pleasures. You've enjoyed your share, just like they did, and you've talked nonsense, just like they did. Their deeds became worthless in this world and the Hereafter — they're the real losers.

70. Didn't they hear the stories of those who came before them — the people of Noah, Aad, Thamud, Abraham's people, the people of Midian, and the ruined cities? Their messengers brought them clear proofs. Allah didn't wrong them — they wronged themselves.

71. The believing men and women are friends and protectors of each other. They encourage what's right, stop what's wrong, pray regularly, give charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will surely show them mercy. Truly, Allah is Mighty and Wise.

72. Allah has promised the believing men and women Gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, where they'll live forever, and beautiful homes in Gardens of Eden. But Allah's approval is even greater — that's the greatest success.

73. Prophet, strive firmly against the disbelievers and hypocrites, and be strong with them. Their home will be Hell — what a terrible place to end up!

74. They swear by Allah they didn't say anything wrong — but they definitely spoke words of disbelief, and rejected faith after accepting Islam. They planned something, but couldn't achieve it. They were upset only because Allah and His Messenger made them rich from His kindness. If they repent, it'll be better for them. But if they turn away, Allah will punish them painfully in this world and the Hereafter. They'll have no friend or helper anywhere on earth.

75. Some people made a promise to Allah, saying, "If He gives us from His blessings, we will surely give charity and become good people."

76. But when He gave them from His blessings, they became stingy, turned away, and kept avoiding Him.

77. So He placed hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day they meet Him, because they broke their promise to Allah and kept telling lies.

78. Don't they know that Allah knows their secrets and their private talks, and that Allah knows everything hidden?

79. Those who criticize the believers who give charity voluntarily, and make fun of those who can only give their efforts — Allah mocks them instead, and they will have a painful punishment.

80. Whether you ask forgiveness for them or not — even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times — Allah will never forgive them. This is because they rejected Allah and His Messenger, and Allah does not guide those who disobey.

81. Those who stayed behind were happy to sit back and not follow Allah's Messenger. They disliked struggling with their wealth and lives in Allah's way, and they said, "Don't go out in this heat!" Say, "The fire of Hell is much hotter," if only they understood.

82. Let them laugh a little now — they will cry a lot later, as a reward for what they used to do.

83. If Allah brings you back to a group of them, and they ask your permission to go out with you, say, "You will never go out with me, nor will you ever fight an enemy with me. You chose to stay behind the first time, so now stay behind with those who remain."

84. And never pray for any of them who dies, nor stand by his grave. They rejected Allah and His Messenger, and died while disobedient.

85. Don't let their wealth or their children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them through these things in this life, and their souls depart while they are disbelievers.

86. When a Chapter is revealed saying, "Believe in Allah and struggle alongside His Messenger," the wealthy ones among them ask your permission, saying, "Let us stay behind with those who remain."

87. They are satisfied to stay behind with those left back, and their hearts have been sealed, so they don't understand.

88. But the Messenger and those who believe with him struggle with their wealth and their lives. For them are all good things, and they are the successful ones.

89. Allah has prepared for them Gardens with rivers flowing beneath, where they will live forever. That is the greatest success.

90. Some desert Arabs came with excuses, asking permission not to go, while others who lied to Allah and His Messenger stayed behind. Those who disbelieved among them will surely face a painful punishment.

91. There's no blame on the weak, the sick, or those who can't afford to spend, if they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger. There's no blame on those who do good — Allah is forgiving and kind.

92. Nor is there blame on those who came to you asking for a ride, and you said, "I don't have anything to carry you on." They turned away, their eyes overflowing with tears, deeply sad that they had nothing to spend.

93. The blame is only on those who ask your permission to stay behind, even though they are wealthy. They are pleased to stay with those who remain behind — so Allah has sealed their hearts, and they do not know.

94. They'll make excuses to you when you return to them. Say, "Don't make excuses — we won't believe you. Allah has already told us the truth about you. Allah and His Messenger will see what you do, and then you'll be returned to the One Who knows everything hidden and open. He'll tell you exactly what you've done."

95. When you return to them, they'll swear by Allah to you, hoping you'll leave them alone. So leave them alone — they're impure, and their home will be Hell, as a punishment for what they've earned.

96. They'll swear to you, hoping you'll be pleased with them. But even if you're pleased with them, Allah will never be pleased with people who disobey Him.

97. The desert Arabs are more intense in disbelief and hypocrisy, and more likely to be unaware of the boundaries Allah revealed to His Messenger. Allah knows everything and is wise.

98. Some desert Arabs see what they spend as a burden, and they wait for trouble to come to you. But trouble will surround them instead — Allah hears everything and knows everything.

99. Yet some desert Arabs believe in Allah and the Last Day, and they see what they give as a way to come closer to Allah, and to gain the prayers of the Messenger. Truly, it brings them closer — Allah will admit them into His mercy. Allah is forgiving and kind.

100. The first and foremost believers — the ones who migrated and those who helped them, and those who followed them in doing good — Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens with rivers flowing beneath, where they will stay forever. That is the greatest success.

101. Some of the desert Arabs around you are hypocrites, and so are some people from the city. They have become skilled at hiding their hypocrisy. You don't know them, but We know them. We will punish them twice, and then they will be returned to a terrible punishment.

102. Others have admitted their mistakes. They have mixed good deeds with bad ones. Allah may accept their repentance, for Allah is truly forgiving and merciful.

103. Take charity from their wealth to purify them and cleanse them. And pray for them — your prayers bring comfort to their hearts. Allah hears everything and knows everything.

104. Don't they know that it is Allah Who accepts repentance from His servants and receives their charity? Allah is truly the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.

105. Say to them, "Do good deeds. Allah will see your actions, and so will His Messenger and the believers. Then you will return to the One Who knows everything hidden and everything open, and He will tell you clearly what you used to do."

106. There are others whose case is delayed until Allah decides about them — either He will punish them, or He will accept their repentance. Allah knows everything and is wise.

107. Some people built a mosque to cause harm, disbelief, and division among the believers, and as a base for those who fought against Allah and His Messenger before. They will surely swear, "We only meant good!" But Allah Himself testifies that they are lying.

108. Never pray in that mosque. A mosque founded on righteousness from the very first day deserves your prayers far more. In it are people who love to keep themselves pure, and Allah loves those who purify themselves.

109. Who is better — the one who builds his foundation on respect for Allah and His pleasure, or the one who builds his foundation on the edge of a crumbling cliff, which then collapses with him into the fire of Hell? Allah does not guide those who do wrong.

110. The building they made will always fill their hearts with doubt, until their hearts break apart. Allah knows everything and is wise.

111. Allah has bought from the believers their lives and their wealth, and in return, He gives them Paradise. They fight for Allah's cause — they may kill or be killed. This is a true promise from Him, written in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran. Who keeps promises better than Allah? So celebrate the deal you have made with Him — that is the greatest success.

112. Those who turn back to Allah, who worship Him, who praise Him, who travel seeking His pleasure, who bow down and prostrate in prayer, who encourage what is right and forbid what is wrong, and who carefully guard the limits set by Allah — give good news to the believers.

113. It is not right for the Prophet and the believers to ask forgiveness for those who worship others besides Allah — even if they are close relatives — after it has become clear that they are people of Hellfire.

114. Abraham asked forgiveness for his father only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to Abraham that his father was an enemy of Allah, he distanced himself from him. Abraham was truly tender-hearted and patient.

115. Allah would never let people lose their way after guiding them, until He clearly shows them what they should avoid. Allah knows everything.

116. To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and causes death. Besides Allah, you have no protector and no helper.

117. Allah has forgiven the Prophet, the migrants, and the helpers who stood by him during the difficult time, when the hearts of some of them nearly wavered. Then He forgave them again — He is truly kind and merciful to them.

118. And He also forgave the three who stayed behind, until the earth, despite its vastness, felt tight around them, and even their own souls felt tight. They realized there was no escape from Allah except by turning back to Him. Then He forgave them, so they could repent. Allah is truly the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.

119. Believers, be mindful of Allah and stay with those who are truthful.

120. It was not right for the people of Medina and those around them from the desert Arabs to stay behind Allah's Messenger, nor to care more about themselves than about him. This is because whenever they suffer thirst, tiredness, or hunger in Allah's way, or step into any place that angers the disbelievers, or achieve any victory over an enemy — it is always recorded for them as a good deed. Allah never wastes the reward of those who do good.

121. And whenever they spend anything, small or large, or cross any valley — it is recorded for them, so that Allah may reward them with the best of what they did.

122. It is not right for all the believers to go out together. Instead, from each group, some should stay behind to gain deeper understanding of the religion, so they can teach their people when they return, helping them to be careful.

123. Believers, fight those disbelievers who are closest to you, and let them find strictness in you. Know that Allah is with those who are mindful of Him.

124. Whenever a new chapter is revealed, some of them ask, "Which of you has had their faith increased by this?" As for the believers, it increases their faith, and they rejoice.

125. But as for those whose hearts are sick, it adds impurity to their impurity, and they die as disbelievers.

126. Don't they see that they are tested once or twice every year? Yet they don't repent, nor do they learn a lesson.

127. Whenever a Chapter is revealed, they glance at each other, saying, "Is anyone watching you?" Then they quietly slip away. Allah has turned their hearts away, because they are people who don't understand.

128. A Messenger has come to you from among yourselves. It hurts him deeply when you suffer, he cares deeply about you, and he is gentle and merciful to the believers.

129. But if they turn away, say, "Allah is enough for me. There is no god except Him. I put my trust in Him, and He is the Lord of the mighty Throne."
