In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Kind.

1. Those who disbelieve and block others from Allah's path — He makes their deeds worthless.

2. But those who believe, do good deeds, and believe in what was revealed to Muhammad — which is the truth from their Lord — He wipes away their sins, and sets their hearts right.

3. That's because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, while those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. This is how Allah shows people clear examples.

4. So when you meet those who disbelieve in battle, strike their necks until you have defeated them completely. Then tie them firmly, and afterward either show kindness or accept ransom, until the war ends. If Allah wanted, He could have defeated them Himself, but He tests some of you through others. And those who are killed in Allah's way — He will never let their deeds go to waste.

5. He will guide them and set their hearts at peace.

6. And He will bring them into Paradise, which He has already made known to them.

7. Believers, if you help Allah's cause, He will help you and make your steps firm.

8. But those who disbelieve — misery awaits them, and He makes their deeds worthless.

9. That's because they hated what Allah sent down, so He made all their actions useless.

10. Haven't they traveled through the land, and seen how things ended for those before them? Allah destroyed them completely, and the disbelievers will face the same.

11. That's because Allah protects those who believe, but the disbelievers have no protector.

12. Allah will surely bring those who believe and do good deeds into Gardens with rivers flowing beneath them. But those who disbelieve — they enjoy themselves and eat like animals, and the Fire will be their home.

13. How many towns, stronger than the one that drove you out, have We destroyed? They had no helper.

14. Can someone who clearly sees the truth from his Lord, be like someone who thinks his bad deeds look good, and He follows his own desires?

15. Here is a description of the Paradise promised to those who are mindful of Allah: rivers of fresh water that never goes bad, rivers of milk whose taste never changes, rivers of delicious wine for those who drink, and rivers of pure honey. They will have all kinds of fruit there, and forgiveness from their Lord. Can they be compared to those who stay forever in the Fire, drinking boiling water that tears their insides apart?

16. Among them are some who listen to you, but when they leave, they say to those given knowledge, "What did he just say?" These are the ones whose hearts Allah has sealed, and they follow their own desires.

17. But those who follow guidance — He increases them in guidance and grants them mindfulness of Him.

18. Are they waiting for anything except the Hour to come suddenly? Its signs have already appeared. But when it actually comes, how will remembering help them then?

19. So know that there is no god except Allah. And ask forgiveness for your sins, and for the believing men and women. Allah knows all about your movements and your resting places.

20. Those who believe say, "Why isn't a Chapter sent down?" But when a clear Chapter is revealed, mentioning fighting, you see those with sickness in their hearts staring at you like someone near death. It would be better for them.

21. To obey and speak kindly. Then, when the decision is made, if they were true to Allah, it would surely be better for them.

22. Then, if you turned away, would you spread corruption on earth, and break your family ties?

23. Those are the ones Allah has cursed — He made them deaf and blinded their eyes.

24. Don't they think deeply about the Quran, or are their hearts locked shut?

25. Those who turned back after the truth became clear to them — Satan tempted them and filled them with false hopes.

26. That is because they said to those who hate what Allah revealed, "We will obey you in some things." But Allah knows their secrets.

27. So how will it be when the angels take their souls, striking their faces and backs?

28. That is because they followed what angered Allah, and disliked what pleased Him, so He made all their deeds worthless.

29. Do those with sickness in their hearts think Allah will never expose their hidden grudges?

30. If We wished, We could show them clearly to you, and you would recognize them by their faces. And you will definitely recognize them by the way they speak. Allah knows everything you do.

31. We will surely test you, until We know who among you strives hard and stays patient. And We will test what you do.

32. Those who disbelieve, block others from Allah's path, and oppose the Messenger after guidance became clear to them — they will never harm Allah at all, and He will make their deeds worthless.

33. Believers, obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and don't let your deeds go to waste.

34. Those who disbelieve and block others from Allah's path, then die as disbelievers — Allah will never forgive them.

35. So don't lose heart or call for peace when you have the upper hand. Allah is with you, and He will never waste your efforts.

36. This worldly life is just play and amusement. But if you believe and stay mindful of Allah, He will reward you, and He won't ask you to give up your wealth.

37. If He asked you for it, and pressed you, you'd become stingy, and your hidden grudges would come out.

38. Here you are, invited to spend in Allah's way. Yet some of you hold back — and whoever holds back only harms himself. Allah is rich beyond need, and you are the ones in need. If you turn away, He will replace you with others, and they won't be like you.
