In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Kind.

1. Blessed is He Who sent down the Criterion to His servant, so he could warn all people.

2. He is the One Who rules the heavens and the earth. He has no child, and He has no partner in His rule. He created everything, giving it perfect measure.

3. Yet they have chosen gods besides Him — gods who create nothing, but are themselves created. Gods that can't help or harm even themselves, nor do they control life, death, or coming back to life.

4. Those who disbelieve say, "This is nothing but a lie he made up, helped by other people." But they've come up with something deeply unfair and false.

5. And they say, "These are just old stories he wrote down, dictated to him morning and evening."

6. Say, "It was sent down by the One Who knows every secret in the heavens and the earth. He is always forgiving, always caring."

7. And they say, "What's with this messenger? He eats food and walks around in the markets. Why wasn't an angel sent down with him, to help him warn people?"

8. "Or, why wasn't a treasure given to him, or a garden he could eat from?" And the wrongdoers say, "You're only following a man who's under a spell."

9. See how they make up examples about you — they've gone so far astray, and they can't find the right way.

10. Blessed is He Who, if He wished, could give you something far better — gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, and grand palaces.

11. But instead, they deny the Day of Judgment. And for those who deny that Day, We've prepared a blazing fire.

12. When it sees them from far away, they'll hear its furious roaring and heavy breathing.

13. And when they're thrown into a tight, narrow place inside it, chained together, they'll cry out, begging for destruction.

14. "Don't cry out today for just one destruction, but cry out for many destructions!"

15. Say, "Is that better, or the eternal garden promised to those who are mindful of Allah? That garden will be their reward and final home."

16. There, they'll have whatever they wish for, forever. This is a promise your Lord will surely fulfill.

17. On the Day He gathers them and those they worshiped besides Allah, He'll ask, "Did you lead My servants astray, or did they lose their own way?"

18. They'll answer, "Glory to You! It wasn't right for us to take protectors besides You. But You gave them and their parents good things, until they forgot Your reminder and became a ruined people."

19. They have denied what you claimed. Now you can't escape or find help. And whoever among you does wrong, We'll make them taste a terrible punishment.

20. We never sent any messengers before you who didn't eat food and walk around in the markets. We've made some of you a test for others — will you be patient? Your Lord sees everything clearly.

21. Those who don't expect to meet Us say, "Why aren't angels sent down to us, or why can't we see our Lord?" They've become arrogant in their hearts, and they've crossed all limits.

22. On the day they finally see the angels, there won't be any good news for the wrongdoers. They'll cry out, "Keep away! Stay away!"

23. Then We will turn to the deeds they did, and scatter them like dust in the wind.

24. On that day, the people of Paradise will have the best home, and the nicest place to rest.

25. On the day when the sky splits open with clouds, and angels come down in waves.

26. On that day, true authority will belong only to the Most Merciful. And for those who rejected the truth, it'll be a very hard day.

27. On that day, the wrongdoer will bite his hands, saying, "I wish I had followed the path with the Messenger!

28. Oh no! I wish I'd never taken that person as my friend!

29. He misled me from the Reminder after it had reached me!" Satan always betrays humans.

30. And the Messenger will say, "My Lord, my people have abandoned this Quran."

31. In this way, We gave every prophet enemies from among the wrongdoers. But your Lord is enough as a guide and helper.

32. Those who disbelieve say, "Why wasn't the Quran sent down to him all at once?" We revealed it gradually to strengthen your heart, and We recited it clearly, little by little.

33. Whenever they bring you an argument, We bring you the truth and the best explanation.

34. Those who will be dragged on their faces into Hell — they'll be in the worst place, and farthest from the right path.

35. We gave Moses the Book, and made his brother Aaron his helper.

36. Then We said, "Go to the people who rejected Our signs," and We completely destroyed them.

37. And when Noah's people rejected the messengers, We drowned them and made them a lesson for all people. We've prepared a painful punishment for those who do wrong.

38. And We destroyed Aad, and Thamud, and the people of the well, and many generations in between.

39. We gave each of them examples, and then We completely destroyed them.

40. They've passed by the town that was showered with terrible rain. Didn't they see it clearly? No — they didn't expect they'd ever come back to life.

41. Whenever they see you, they only make fun of you, saying, "Is this the one Allah sent as a messenger?

42. He almost led us away from our gods, if we hadn't stayed loyal to them." Soon, when they see the punishment, they'll realize who's really lost their way.

43. Have you seen the one who takes his own desires as his god? Can you be responsible for him?

44. Or do you think most of them really listen or understand? They're just like cattle — no, they're even more lost.

45. Haven't you seen how your Lord stretches out the shadow? If He wanted, He could have made it still — but instead, We made the sun its guide.

46. Then We gently draw it back toward Us.

47. He is the One Who made the night like a covering for you, sleep for rest, and the day for rising and activity.

48. He is the One Who sends the winds as good news before His mercy, and We send down pure water from the sky.

49. To bring life to a dry, dead land, and to give drink to many animals and people that We created.

50. We have explained it to them in many ways, so they might remember — but most people refuse everything except disbelief.

51. If We had wanted, We could have sent a warner to every town.

52. So don't obey those who disbelieve, and strive against them with this Quran, making a great effort.

53. He is the One Who made the two seas flow side by side — one sweet and fresh, the other salty and bitter — and He placed a barrier between them, a boundary they can't cross.

54. He is the One Who created human beings from water, then made them related by family and marriage. Your Lord has always had complete power.

55. Yet they worship things besides Allah that can't help or harm them. The disbeliever supports others against his own Lord.

56. We sent you only to give good news and to warn.

57. Say, "I don't ask you for any reward for this — only that whoever wishes may take a path toward his Lord."

58. Put your trust in the Ever-Living One Who never dies, and praise Him with thanks. He knows perfectly the sins of His servants.

59. He created the heavens, the earth, and everything between them in six days, then He rose above the Throne. He is the Most Merciful, so ask someone who truly knows about Him.

60. When they are told, "Bow down to the Most Merciful," they say, "Who is this 'Most Merciful'? Should we bow down just because you tell us to?" It only makes them turn away even more.

61. Blessed is He Who placed constellations in the sky, and put there a glowing sun and a shining moon.

62. He is the One Who made night and day follow each other — for anyone who wants to remember or to be thankful.

63. The true servants of the Most Merciful walk gently on the earth, and when foolish people speak harshly to them, they reply with peace.

64. They spend their nights bowing and standing in prayer to their Lord.

65. They say, "Our Lord, keep the punishment of Hell away from us. Its punishment sticks and never lets go.

66. It is an awful place to stay, and a horrible home."

67. They are those who, when they spend, are neither wasteful nor stingy, but keep a fair balance between the two.

68. They never worship any god besides Allah, nor take a life — which Allah has forbidden — except for a just reason, nor commit adultery. Whoever does these things will face serious consequences.

69. Their punishment will be doubled on the Day of Judgment, and they will stay in disgrace forever.

70. Except for those who repent, believe, and do good deeds — Allah will change their bad deeds into good ones. Allah is always forgiving and kind.

71. Whoever repents and does good has truly turned back to Allah in the best way.

72. They are those who never give false testimony, and when they pass by useless talk, they walk away with dignity.

73. When they are reminded of their Lord's verses, they don't ignore them, as if they were deaf or blind.

74. They say, "Our Lord, give us joy in our spouses and children, and make us good examples for those who are mindful of You."

75. They will be rewarded with the highest places in Paradise because of their patience, and there they will be greeted with welcome and peace.

76. They will live there forever — what a wonderful place to stay and call home!

77. Say, "My Lord wouldn't care about you if you didn't call upon Him. But now you've rejected, so it will surely come."
