In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Kind.

1. Alif. Lam. Meem.

2. This is the Book, without doubt, a guide for those who are mindful of Allah.

3. Those who believe in the unseen, pray regularly, and give from what We have provided for them.

4. Those who believe in what was revealed to you, and what was revealed before you, and who are certain about the Hereafter.

5. They are guided by their Lord, and they are the successful ones.

6. As for those who disbelieve, it makes no difference whether you warn them or not — they won't believe.

7. Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing, and their eyes are covered. They will have a great punishment.

8. Some people say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," but they aren't really believers.

9. They try to deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves, and they don't realize it.

10. Their hearts have a disease, so Allah has increased their disease. They will have a painful punishment because of their lies.

11. When they're told, "Don't spread corruption on earth," they say, "We're only making things better."

12. But truly, they're the corruptors — they just don't realize it.

13. When they're told, "Believe as other people believe," they say, "Should we believe like those fools?" But truly, they're the fools — they just don't know it.

14. When they meet believers, they say, "We believe," but when they're alone with their evil friends, they say, "We're really with you — we were only joking."

15. Allah mocks them and lets them wander blindly in their rebellion.

16. They're the ones who traded guidance for misguidance — their trade didn't bring any profit, and they weren't guided.

17. They're like someone who lit a fire, and when it brightened everything around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness, unable to see.

18. Deaf, mute, and blind — they won't return to the right path.

19. Or they're like people caught in a heavy rainstorm from the sky, filled with darkness, thunder, and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears because of the thunderclaps, afraid of death — but Allah surrounds the disbelievers completely.

20. The lightning almost takes away their sight. Whenever it flashes, they walk forward, but when darkness covers them again, they stand still. If Allah wanted, He could take away their hearing and sight — Allah certainly has power over everything.

21. O people, worship your Lord, Who created you and those before you, so that you may become mindful of Him.

22. He made the earth a resting place for you, and the sky a building. He sends down rain from the sky, bringing out fruits as food for you. So don't set up equals to Allah, while you know.

23. And if you're in doubt about what We revealed to Our servant, then produce a chapter like it. Call your helpers besides Allah, if you're truthful.

24. But if you don't do it — and you'll never be able to do it — then beware of the Fire, whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.

25. Give good news to those who believe and do good deeds: they'll have gardens with rivers flowing beneath them. Whenever they're given fruits from there, they'll say, "This is like what we were given before." They're given something similar. They'll have pure companions there, and they'll stay there forever.

26. Allah isn't shy to give examples, even of something of a mosquito or anything beyond it. Those who believe know it's the truth from their Lord. But those who disbelieve say, "What does Allah mean by this example?" He misguides many by it, and guides many by it — but He only misguides those who disobey.

27. Those who break Allah's promise after agreeing to it, who cut off relationships that Allah commanded to be kept, and who spread corruption on earth. Those are the ones who truly lose.

28. How can you reject Allah, when you were lifeless, then He gave you life? Then He'll cause you to die, then bring you back to life again, and then you'll return to Him.

29. He's the One Who created everything on earth for you. Then He turned toward the sky, shaping it into seven heavens. And He has complete knowledge of all things.

30. Remember when your Lord said to the angels, "I will place a representative on the earth." They asked, "Will You put someone there who will cause trouble and shed blood, while we praise You and honor Your holiness?" He answered, "I know what you don't know."

31. And He taught Adam the names of all things. Then He showed them to the angels and said, "Tell Me the names of these, if you are truthful."

32. They replied, "Glory to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Truly, You are the All-Knowing, the Wise."

33. Allah said, "Adam, tell them their names." When Adam told them their names, Allah said, "Didn't I tell you that I know the hidden things of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you show and what you hide?"

34. And remember when We said to the angels, "Bow down before Adam," so they all bowed down except Iblis. He refused, became proud, and was one of the disbelievers.

35. We said, "Adam, live with your wife in Paradise, and eat freely whatever you like. But don't go near this tree, or you'll become wrongdoers."

36. Satan caused them to slip from Paradise, removing them from the state they were in. We said, "Go down from here as enemies to each other. On earth you'll have a place to stay and things to enjoy for a while."

37. Then Adam received words from his Lord, and Allah accepted his repentance. Truly, He is the One Who always accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.

38. We said, "Go down from here, all of you. When guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will have no fear, nor will they be sad."

39. But those who disbelieve and reject Our verses — they will be the people of the Fire, staying there forever.

40. Children of Israel, remember My blessings that I gave you. Keep your promise to Me, and I will keep My promise to you. And fear only Me.

41. Believe in what I have sent down, confirming what you already have. Don't be the first to reject it, and don't trade My verses for a small price. Be mindful of Me alone.

42. Don't mix truth with falsehood, or hide the truth when you know it.

43. Pray regularly, give charity, and bow down with those who bow down.

44. Do you tell people to do good, but forget yourselves, even though you read the Scripture? Don't you understand?

45. Seek help through patience and prayer. It is truly difficult, except for those who are humble.

46. Those who know they will meet their Lord, and that they will return to Him.

47. Children of Israel, remember My blessings that I gave you, and that I favored you above all people.

48. Beware of a Day when no soul can help another in any way. No intercession will be accepted, no ransom will be taken, and no one will be helped.

49. Remember when We saved you from Pharaoh's people, who treated you terribly, killing your sons and letting your daughters live. That was a great test from your Lord.

50. And remember when We parted the sea for you, saving you and drowning Pharaoh's people, while you watched.

51. And remember when We made an appointment with Moses for forty nights, but then, after he left, you worshiped the calf — you did wrong.

52. Even after that, We forgave you, so that you might be thankful.

53. And remember when We gave Moses the Scripture and the clear standard of right and wrong, so you could find the right way.

54. And remember when Moses said to his people, "My people, you've truly wronged yourselves by worshiping the calf. So turn back to your Creator and kill yourselves — that's better for you with your Creator." Then He accepted your repentance. He is truly the One Who always accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.

55. And remember when you said, "Moses, we won't believe you until we see Allah openly." Then lightning struck you down while you watched.

56. But then We brought you back to life after your death, so you might be thankful.

57. And We shaded you with clouds, and sent down to you manna and quails, saying, "Eat from the good things We've provided you." They didn't wrong Us, but they wronged themselves.

58. And remember when We said, "Enter this town, and eat freely whatever you like from it. Enter the gate humbly, and say, 'Forgive us.' Then We'll forgive your mistakes, and We'll give even more to those who do good."

59. But those who did wrong changed the words they were told to say. So We sent down punishment from heaven on them, because they kept disobeying.

60. And remember when Moses asked for water for his people, and We said, "Strike the rock with your staff." Then twelve springs flowed out from it, and each group knew exactly where to drink. "Eat and drink from what Allah has provided, and don't spread trouble and corruption on earth."

61. And remember when you said, "Moses, we can't bear eating the same food every day. So ask your Lord to give us what grows from the earth — its herbs, cucumbers, garlic, lentils, and onions." Moses said, "Do you really want to trade something better for something worse? Go down to Misr, and you'll find what you're asking for." Humiliation and misery were placed upon them, and they earned Allah's anger. That's because they kept rejecting Allah's verses, and unjustly killing the prophets. All this was because they disobeyed and crossed the limits.

62. Truly, those who believe, and those who are Jews, Christians, or Sabians — anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day, and does good deeds, they'll have their reward with their Lord. They'll have nothing to fear, and they'll never be sad.

63. And remember when We took your promise, and raised the mountain above you, saying, "Hold firmly to what We've given you, and remember what's in it, so you might become mindful of Allah."

64. But even after that, you turned away. If it weren't for Allah's favor and mercy upon you, you surely would've been among the losers.

65. You surely know about those among you who broke the Sabbath rule. So We said to them, "Become rejected apes!"

66. We made this punishment an example for those who lived before them and those who came after them, and a clear lesson for those who fear Allah.

67. Remember when Moses said to his people, "Allah commands you to sacrifice a cow." They replied, "Are you making fun of us?" Moses said, "I ask Allah to protect me from being among the ignorant."

68. They said, "Ask your Lord to clearly explain to us what kind of cow it is." Moses answered, "He says it is a cow — not too old, not too young, but middle-aged. Now do as you're told."

69. They said, "Ask your Lord to clearly explain to us what color it is." Moses answered, "He says it is a bright yellow cow, whose color pleases everyone who sees it."

70. They said, "Ask your Lord to clearly explain to us exactly what cow it is, because all cows seem alike to us. Allah willing, we'll surely find the right one."

71. Moses answered, "He says it is a cow not trained to plow the earth or water the fields, healthy and without any marks." They said, "Now you've brought the truth!" Then they sacrificed it, though they almost didn't.

72. Remember when you killed someone and argued about it, but Allah was going to reveal what you were hiding.

73. So We said, "Strike the dead body with a part of the cow." This is how Allah brings the dead back to life, and He shows you His signs so you may understand.

74. But even after all this, your hearts became hard — like stones, or even harder. For some stones split open, and rivers flow from them. Some stones crack, and water comes out. And some stones fall down in fear of Allah. Allah is never unaware of what you do.

75. Do you really hope they'll believe you, when some of them used to hear Allah's words, then changed them, even after they understood them clearly, knowing exactly what they were doing?

76. When they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe too." But when they're alone with each other, they say, "Why are you telling them what Allah has revealed to you? They'll use it against you before your Lord! Don't you think?"

77. Don't they know that Allah knows everything they hide and everything they show openly?

78. Some of them can't read or write, and they don't know the Scripture — only wishful thinking and assumptions.

79. So terrible suffering awaits those who write something with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allah," just to trade it for a small price. Terrible suffering awaits them for what their hands wrote, and terrible suffering awaits them for what they gain from it.

80. They say, "The Fire won't touch us except for a few days." Say, "Did you make a promise with Allah? Allah never breaks His promise. Or are you saying things about Allah that you don't know?"

81. No, whoever does wrong and is surrounded by their mistakes — those are the people of the Fire, staying there forever.

82. But those who believe and do good deeds — those are the people of Paradise, staying there forever.

83. Remember when We made a promise with the Children of Israel: "Worship only Allah, be kind to your parents, relatives, orphans, and the poor. Speak kindly to people, pray regularly, and give charity." But then most of you turned away, refusing to listen.

84. And remember when We made your promise clear: "Don't kill each other, and don't force your own people out of their homes." You agreed and witnessed this promise.

85. Yet here you are, killing each other and forcing some of your own people out of their homes, helping each other in sin and wrongdoing against them. Then, if they come to you as prisoners, you pay to free them — even though forcing them out was forbidden to you. Do you believe in part of the Scripture and reject another part? Anyone who does this will face disgrace in this life, and on the Day of Judgment they'll be sent to the harshest punishment. Allah is never unaware of what you do.

86. These are the people who trade the life of the Hereafter for this world. Their punishment won't be made lighter, and no one will help them.

87. We gave Moses the Scripture and sent messengers after him. We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear miracles and supported him with the Holy Spirit. But every time a messenger came to you with something you didn't like, you acted arrogantly — rejecting some messengers and killing others.

88. They say, "Our hearts are sealed." No, Allah has cursed them because of their disbelief, so very few of them truly believe.

89. And when a Book from Allah came to them, confirming what they already had — though before, they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved — when what they recognized finally came, they rejected it. So Allah's curse is upon the disbelievers.

90. What a terrible trade they made for themselves — rejecting what Allah sent down, out of jealousy that Allah would send His favor to whichever of His servants He chooses. So they earned anger upon anger, and for those who reject the truth, there is a humiliating punishment.

91. When they are told, "Believe in what Allah has revealed," they say, "We believe only in what was revealed to us," and they reject anything beyond that — even though it is the truth, confirming what they already have. Say, "Then why did you kill Allah's prophets before, if you were truly believers?"

92. Moses came to you with clear signs, but even after that, you took the calf for worship — you did wrong.

93. And remember when We took your promise and raised the mountain above you, saying, "Hold firmly to what We have given you, and listen." They said, "We hear, but we disobey." Their hearts were filled with love for the calf because of their disbelief. Say, "How terrible is what your faith commands you, if you really are believers!"

94. Say, "If the home of the Hereafter with Allah is truly yours alone, and not for other people, then wish for death, if you're telling the truth."

95. But they will never wish for death, because of what their own hands have done. And Allah knows those who do wrong.

96. You will find them clinging to life more eagerly than anyone else — even more than those who worship others besides Allah. Each one of them wishes he could live a thousand years, but even living that long would not save him from punishment. Allah sees clearly everything they do.

97. Say, "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel — he is the one who brought this revelation down to your heart by Allah's permission, confirming what came before it, and as guidance and joyful news for the believers."

98. Whoever is an enemy to Allah, His angels, His messengers, Gabriel, and Michael — then surely Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers.

99. We have certainly sent down clear verses to you, and no one rejects them except those who defiantly disobey.

100. Every time they made a promise, some of them threw it away — but most of them don't believe.

101. And when a messenger from Allah came to them, confirming the truth they already had, some of those who received the Scripture tossed Allah's Book behind their backs, as if they didn't even know.

102. They followed what the devils taught during Solomon's reign. Solomon never disbelieved — it was the devils who disbelieved, teaching people magic, and what was revealed to the two angels, Harut and Marut, in Babylon. But those two angels never taught anyone without first saying, "We are only a test, so don't disbelieve." Yet people learned from them how to separate a husband from his wife. But they couldn't harm anyone with it unless Allah allowed it. They learned things that hurt them and didn't help them at all. And they knew that whoever chose magic would have no share in the Hereafter. What a terrible price they paid for themselves — if only they understood!

103. If only they had believed and been mindful of Allah, the reward from Him would have been far better — if only they realized!

104. Believers, don't say "Ra'ina," but say "Unzurna," and listen carefully. For those who reject the truth, there is a painful punishment.

105. Neither the disbelievers among the People of the Book nor the idol-worshipers want any good to come down to you from your Lord. But Allah chooses whoever He wills for His mercy. Allah is the possessor of great favor.

106. Whenever We replace a verse or cause it to be forgotten, We bring another that's better or just as good. Don't you know that Allah has power over everything?

107. Don't you know that the kingdom of the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah alone? Besides Allah, you have no protector and no helper.

108. Or do you want to question your messenger, just as Moses was questioned before? Whoever trades belief for disbelief has truly lost the right path.

109. Many of the People of the Book wish they could turn you back into disbelievers after you've believed, out of jealousy deep inside them — even after the truth became clear to them. So forgive them and overlook their faults until Allah brings about His command. Allah has power over everything.

110. Keep up the prayer and give charity. Whatever good you send ahead for yourselves, you'll find it with Allah. Allah sees everything you do.

111. They say, "No one will enter Paradise unless they're Jews or Christians." Those are just their wishes. Say, "Bring your proof, if you're telling the truth."

112. But whoever gives themselves completely to Allah and does good, they'll have their reward with their Lord. They'll have no fear, and they won't be sad.

113. The Jews say, "The Christians are upon nothing," and the Christians say, "The Jews are upon nothing," even though they both read the Scripture. Those who don't know say the same things. Allah will judge between them on the Day of Judgment about what they argued over.

114. Who could be more unfair than those who stop people from remembering Allah's name in His places of worship and try to ruin them? Those people shouldn't enter them except in fear. They'll face disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter they'll have a terrible punishment.

115. The east and the west belong to Allah, so wherever you turn, there is Allah's presence. Allah is truly vast and knows everything.

116. They say, "Allah has taken a child." Glory to Him! No, everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him, and all obey Him completely.

117. He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decides something, He just says to it, "Be," and it is.

118. Those who don't know say, "Why doesn't Allah speak to us directly, or send us a clear sign?" People before them said the same thing — their hearts are alike. We've already made the signs clear for those who truly believe.

119. We've sent you with the truth, to bring good news and to warn. You won't be asked about those who end up in Hellfire.

120. The Jews and Christians won't ever be pleased with you unless you follow their ways. Say, "Allah's guidance is the true guidance." If you follow their desires after the knowledge that's come to you, you'll have no protector or helper from Allah.

121. Those who were given the Scripture and reed it as it should be read — they truly believe in it. But whoever rejects it, they're the ones who lose.

122. Children of Israel, remember My blessings that I gave you, and that I favored you above all other people.

123. And fear a Day when no one can help another in any way. No payment will be accepted, no one's pleading will help, and no one will receive support.

124. Remember when Abraham's Lord tested him with certain commands, and he fulfilled them completely. Allah said, "I will make you a leader for all people." Abraham asked, "And what about my descendants?" Allah replied, "My promise does not include those who do wrong."

125. And remember when We made the Sacred House a place people return to again and again, and a safe haven. Take the place where Abraham stood as a spot for prayer. And We instructed Abraham and Ishmael, "Keep My House pure for those who circle it, those who stay there in worship, and those who bow down and prostrate."

126. And remember when Abraham prayed, "My Lord, make this city safe, and provide its people with fruits — those among them who believe in Allah and the Last Day." Allah answered, "Even those who disbelieve — I will let them enjoy life for a short while, then I will force them into the punishment of the Fire. What a terrible destination!"

127. And remember when Abraham and Ishmael were raising the foundations of the House, praying, "Our Lord, accept this from us. You are truly the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."

128. "Our Lord, make us devoted to You, and from our descendants, raise a community devoted to You. Show us clearly how to worship You, and forgive us. You are truly the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful."

129. "Our Lord, send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite Your verses to them, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. You are truly the Almighty, the All-Wise."

130. And who would turn away from Abraham's way except someone who fools himself? We chose him in this world, and in the Hereafter, he will surely be among the righteous.

131. When his Lord said to him, "Submit," Abraham replied, "I submit myself to the Lord of all creation."

132. Abraham instructed his children to do the same, and so did Jacob, saying, "My children, Allah has chosen this faith for you, so do not die except as Muslims."

133. Were you there when death came to Jacob, and he asked his children, "Who will you worship after I'm gone?" They answered, "We will worship your God, the God of your fathers — Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac — the One God, and we surrender completely to Him."

134. That was a community that has passed away. They will get what they earned, and you will get what you earn. You won't be asked about what they used to do.

135. They say, "Become Jews or Christians, and you'll be guided." Say, "No, we follow the faith of Abraham, who was true in worshiping Allah alone, and he never worshiped idols."

136. Say, "We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes, and in what Moses and Jesus were given, and in what all the prophets received from their Lord. We don't make any difference between them, and we submit ourselves completely to Him."

137. So if they believe as you believe, then they're truly guided. But if they turn away, they're just causing division. Allah will protect you from them — He hears everything and knows everything.

138. This is Allah's coloring, and who could color better than Allah? And we worship Him alone.

139. Say, "Are you arguing with us about Allah, when He is our Lord and your Lord too? We have our deeds, and you have yours, and we are sincerely devoted to Him."

140. Or do you say that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes were Jews or Christians? Say, "Do you know better, or does Allah?" Who could be more unfair than someone who hides a truth they received from Allah? Allah isn't unaware of what you do.

141. Those people have passed away. They'll have what they earned, and you'll have what you earn. You won't be asked about what they did.

142. Some fools among the people will say, "Why did they turn away from the prayer direction they used to face?" Say, "The east and the west belong to Allah. He guides whoever He wants to a straight path."

143. And so We made you a balanced community, so you can be witnesses for humanity, and the Messenger can be a witness for you. We only set the prayer direction you used before to see clearly who would follow the Messenger and who would turn away. It was a hard test, except for those guided by Allah. Allah would never let your faith go to waste — Allah is truly kind and merciful to people.

144. We've seen you turning your face toward the sky, so now We'll turn you toward a prayer direction you'll be pleased with. So turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you are, turn your faces toward it. Those who received the Scripture know this is the truth from their Lord. Allah isn't unaware of what they do.

145. Even if you brought every proof to those who received the Scripture, they wouldn't follow your prayer direction. And you won't follow theirs, nor will they follow each other's. If you followed their wishes after the knowledge that's come to you, then you'd certainly be among those who do wrong.

146. Those who received the Scripture recognize him clearly, just as they recognize their own children — but some of them hide the truth, even though they know it.

147. The truth comes from your Lord, so never be among those who doubt.

148. Everyone has a direction they turn toward, so hurry to do good deeds. Wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together. Allah certainly has power over everything.

149. Wherever you set out from, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. This is truly the truth from your Lord, and Allah is never unaware of what you do.

150. Wherever you set out from, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you may be, turn your faces toward it. This way, people won't have any argument against you — except those who do wrong among them. So don't fear them, but fear Me, so that I may complete My favor upon you, and so that you may be guided.

151. Just as We sent you a messenger from among yourselves, who recites Our verses to you, purifies you, teaches you the Scripture and wisdom, and teaches you things you never knew before.

152. So remember Me, and I will remember you. Be thankful to Me, and don't be ungrateful.

153. Believers, seek help through patience and prayer. Allah is truly with those who are patient.

154. Don't say about those who are killed in Allah's way, "They are dead." Rather, they are alive, but you don't realize it.

155. We will definitely test you with some fear and hunger, and loss of wealth, lives, and fruits — but give good news to those who are patient.

156. Those who, when trouble comes to them, say, "We belong to Allah, and to Him we will return."

157. They are the ones who receive blessings and mercy from their Lord, and they are the ones who are truly guided.

158. Safa and Marwa are among the sacred signs of Allah. So whoever goes on pilgrimage to the House or visits it, there's no harm in walking between them. And whoever willingly does good, Allah is truly thankful and knows everything.

159. Those who hide the clear proofs and guidance We revealed, after We made them clear to people in the Book — Allah curses them, and all who curse will curse them too.

160. Except those who turn back to Allah, make things right, and openly show the truth — I will forgive them, for I am the One Who always accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.

161. Those who disbelieve and die as disbelievers — upon them is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.

162. They will stay in it forever. Their punishment won't be made lighter, and they won't be given another chance.

163. Your God is one God. There is no god except Him — the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

164. In the creation of the heavens and the earth; the changing of night and day; the ships sailing across the sea, bringing good things for people; the rain Allah sends down from the sky, giving life to the earth after it was dead, spreading all kinds of creatures across it; the changing winds; and the clouds drifting between the sky and the earth — in all these are clear signs for people who think carefully.

165. Still, some people set up others as equals to Allah, loving them as they should love Allah. But those who believe have the strongest love for Allah. If only those who do wrong could see — when they face the punishment — that all power belongs to Allah alone, and that Allah's punishment is truly severe.

166. On that Day, those who were followed will reject their followers. They will all see the punishment, and the bonds between them will break apart.

167. Then the followers will say, "If only we had another chance, we'd reject them just as they rejected us." This is how Allah will show them their deeds as deep regrets, and they'll never escape the Fire.

168. O people, eat from what is good and allowed on earth, and don't follow Satan's footsteps. He is clearly your enemy.

169. He only tells you to do evil and shameful things, and to say things about Allah that you don't know.

170. When they are told, "Follow what Allah has sent down," they say, "No, we follow what we found our parents doing." Even if their parents didn't understand anything and weren't guided?

171. Those who reject the truth are like someone shouting at animals that hear nothing but calls and cries. Deaf, mute, and blind — they don't understand.

172. Believers, eat from the good things We have provided for you, and be thankful to Allah if you truly worship Him.

173. He has only forbidden you to eat animals found dead, blood, pork, and anything offered in the name of someone other than Allah. But if someone is forced by necessity — not wanting to disobey or cross limits — then there's no blame on them. Allah is truly forgiving and merciful.

174. Those who hide what Allah has revealed in the Book, trading it for a small price — they fill their stomachs with nothing but fire. Allah won't speak to them on the Day of Judgment, nor will He purify them. They will have a painful punishment.

175. They traded guidance for misguidance, and forgiveness for punishment. How could they endure the Fire?

176. This is because Allah revealed the Book with truth. Those who argue about the Book are deeply divided.

177. Goodness isn't turning your faces toward the east or west. True goodness is believing in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets; giving wealth, despite loving it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, travelers, those who ask for help, and freeing slaves; praying regularly and giving charity; keeping promises when you make them; and being patient through hardship, suffering, and times of danger. These are the truthful ones, and these are the ones mindful of Allah.

178. Believers, fair retribution is required for murder: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. But if the victim's family forgives the offender—even partly — then everything should be handled kindly and the payment made in a good way. This is a mercy and ease from your Lord. Anyone who crosses the limits after this will have a painful punishment.

179. In fair punishment, there is life for you, people of understanding, so that you may become mindful of Allah.

180. When death approaches any of you, if you leave behind wealth, it's required that you make a fair will for your parents and close relatives. This is a duty for those mindful of Allah.

181. Whoever changes the will after hearing it, the sin is only on those who change it. Allah hears and knows everything.

182. But if someone fears the person making the will was unfair or sinful, and makes peace between everyone involved, there's no blame on them. Allah is truly forgiving and merciful.

183. Believers, fasting is required for you, just as it was required for those before you, so you may become mindful of Allah.

184. Fast for a limited number of days. But if any of you is sick or traveling, then make up the missed days later. And for those who find fasting very hard, they can feed a poor person instead. But whoever does extra good willingly, it is better for them. Still, fasting is better for you, if you only knew.

185. It was in the month of Ramadan that the Quran was revealed — as guidance for all people, clear signs of guidance, and a way to tell right from wrong. So whoever among you sees this month, let them fast it. But if anyone is sick or traveling, then make up the missed days later. Allah wants ease for you, not hardship. He wants you to complete the days of fasting, and to praise Allah for guiding you, and so you may be thankful.

186. And when My servants ask you about Me, I am truly near. I answer the prayer of anyone who calls on Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, so they may find the right way.

187. During the nights of fasting, you are allowed to be close with your wives. They are like clothing for you, and you are like clothing for them. Allah knew you were secretly wronging yourselves, but He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, be close with them, and seek what Allah has allowed for you. And eat and drink until you clearly see the white thread of dawn from the black thread of night. Then complete your fast until nightfall. But do not be close with your wives while you are staying in the mosques for worship. These are Allah's limits, so do not go near them. This is how Allah makes His verses clear to people, so they may become mindful of Him.

188. Do not unfairly take each other's money, and do not use it to bribe judges, hoping to wrongfully take some of other people's wealth — while you know.

189. They ask you about the new moons. Say, "They help people keep track of time and know when to perform the pilgrimage." Goodness isn't entering houses from the back doors, but true goodness is being mindful of Allah. So enter houses through their proper doors, and always be mindful of Allah, so you may succeed.

190. Fight in Allah's way against those who fight you, but don't cross the limits. Allah certainly doesn't love those who cross the limits.

191. Fight them wherever you face them, and drive them out from where they drove you out — for persecution is worse than killing. But don't fight them near the Sacred Mosque unless they fight you there first. If they do fight you there, then fight back. That's how those who reject the truth are repaid.

192. But if they stop, then remember — Allah is forgiving and full of mercy.

193. Keep fighting them until persecution ends and worship is only for Allah. If they stop, then there should be no hostility except against those who do wrong.

194. A sacred month for a sacred month — sacred things must be respected equally. If someone attacks you, respond fairly, just as they attacked you. But always be mindful of Allah, and know that Allah is with those who are mindful of Him.

195. Spend your wealth in Allah's way, and don't lead yourselves into ruin. Do good, because Allah truly loves those who do good.

196. Complete the pilgrimage and the lesser pilgrimage sincerely for Allah. But if you're prevented from doing so, then offer whatever sacrifice you can easily afford. Don't shave your heads until the sacrifice reaches its proper place. If any of you is sick or has a scalp condition, then you must make up for it by fasting, giving charity, or offering a sacrifice. When you're safe again, anyone who combines the lesser pilgrimage with the main pilgrimage must offer whatever sacrifice they can easily afford. If you can't afford one, then fast three days during the pilgrimage and seven days after you return home — that makes ten days in total. This rule is for those whose families don't live near the Sacred Mosque. Always be mindful of Allah, and know that Allah's punishment is severe.

197. The pilgrimage takes place during specific months. Whoever commits to performing it during these months must avoid rude talk, wrongdoing, and arguments during the pilgrimage. Whatever good you do, Allah knows it. Prepare yourselves well, but remember — the best preparation is mindfulness of Allah. So always be mindful of Me, people of understanding.

198. There's no blame on you if you seek some of Allah's blessings during the pilgrimage. When you leave Arafat, remember Allah at the sacred place. Remember Him, because He guided you — before that, you were lost.

199. Then move forward from where everyone else moves forward, and ask Allah for forgiveness. Truly, Allah is forgiving and kind.

200. When you've completed your rituals, remember Allah as much as you remember your own parents — or even more. Some people say, "Our Lord, give us good things in this life," but they'll have no share in the Hereafter.

201. Others say, "Our Lord, give us good in this life and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."

202. Those people will have their share of reward for what they've earned, and Allah is quick in settling accounts.

203. Remember Allah during the appointed days. Whoever leaves after two days, there's no blame on them, and whoever stays longer, there's no blame on them either — as long as they remain mindful of Allah. Always be mindful of Allah, and remember — you'll all be gathered before Him.

204. There are some people whose words impress you in this worldly life, and they even call on Allah as witness to what's in their hearts — but they're the fiercest in arguing.

205. When they turn away, they go around causing corruption on earth, destroying crops and animals. Allah doesn't like corruption.

206. When they're told, "Be mindful of Allah," their pride pushes them deeper into sin. Hellfire is enough for them — what a terrible place to end up!

207. But there are others who willingly give their lives to earn Allah's pleasure. And Allah is always kind and caring toward His servants.

208. Believers, enter completely into peace, and don't follow Satan's footsteps — he's clearly your enemy.

209. But if you slip up after clear signs have come to you, then know that Allah is Mighty and Wise.

210. Are they waiting for Allah and the angels to come to them in clouds of shade? By then, everything will already be decided — and all matters return to Allah.

211. Ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We gave them. Whoever trades away Allah's blessings after they've come to him should know that Allah's punishment is severe.

212. For those who disbelieve, this worldly life seems beautiful, and they laugh at those who believe. But on the Day of Judgment, those who are mindful of Allah will be above them. Allah gives without limit to anyone He chooses.

213. People were once a single community, so Allah sent prophets with good news and warnings, and He sent down the Book with truth to judge between people in their disagreements. Yet, after clear signs came to them, those who received it argued among themselves out of jealousy. Then, by His permission, Allah guided the believers to the truth they had argued about. Allah guides whoever He wills to a straight path.

214. Do you think you'll enter Paradise without experiencing what happened to those who lived before you? They faced suffering and hardship, and they were shaken so deeply that even the Messenger and the believers with him cried out, "When will Allah's help come?" Truly, Allah's help is near.

215. They ask you what they should spend in charity. Say, "Whatever good you spend, let it be for your parents, your relatives, orphans, the poor, and travelers in need. Whatever good you do, Allah knows it well."

216. Fighting has been made a duty for you, even though you dislike it. Sometimes you dislike something, but it's actually good for you. And sometimes you love something, but it's actually bad for you. Allah knows, and you don't know.

217. They ask you about fighting in the sacred month. Say, "Fighting in it is a serious offense. But blocking people from Allah's path, disbelieving in Him, preventing access to the Sacred Mosque, and expelling its people from it — these are even greater in Allah's sight. Causing trouble is worse than killing." They won't stop fighting you until they turn you away from your religion, if they can. Whoever among you turns away from their religion and dies rejecting the truth — their good deeds are wasted in this life and the Hereafter. They are the companions of the Fire, staying there forever.

218. Those who believe, who migrated and struggled for Allah's cause — they are the ones who hope for Allah's mercy. And Allah is forgiving and kind.

219. They ask you about alcohol and gambling. Say, "In both, there is great sin and some benefit for people — but their sin is greater than their benefit." They ask you what they should give. Say, "Give what you can spare." This is how Allah makes His verses clear to you, so you may think deeply.

220. About this life and the Hereafter. They also ask you about orphans. Say, "Improving their lives is best. If you mix your lives with theirs, remember — they are your brothers and sisters." Allah knows who causes harm and who makes things better. If Allah had wanted, He could have made things difficult for you. Truly, Allah is mighty and wise.

221. Don't marry those who worship idols until they believe. A believing servant is better than an idol-worshiper, even if the idol-worshiper impresses you. And don't marry your women to idol-worshipers until they believe. A believing servant is better than an idol-worshiper, even if the idol-worshiper impresses you. Those people invite you to the Fire, while Allah invites you, by His permission, to Paradise and forgiveness. He makes His verses clear to people, so they may remember.

222. They ask you about women's monthly periods. Say, "It is something uncomfortable, so keep apart from women during their periods, and don't come near them until they are clean again. Once they have purified themselves, then approach them as Allah has instructed you." Allah truly loves those who turn back to Him, and He loves those who keep themselves clean.

223. Your wives are like fields for you — so approach your fields as you wish, and send good deeds ahead for yourselves. Always be mindful of Allah, and know that you will meet Him one day. Give good news to those who believe.

224. Don't use Allah's name in your promises as an excuse to stop doing good, being mindful of Him, or making peace between people. Allah hears everything and knows everything.

225. Allah won't blame you for careless promises, but He will hold you responsible for what your hearts truly mean. Allah is forgiving and patient.

226. Those who swear not to go near their wives must wait four months. If they change their minds and return, then Allah is forgiving and kind.

227. But if they firmly decide on divorce, then remember that Allah hears everything and knows everything.

228. Divorced women must wait by themselves for three monthly cycles. If they truly believe in Allah and the Last Day, they must not hide what Allah has created in their wombs. Their husbands have the right to take them back during this time, if they sincerely want to make things better. Women have rights similar to their responsibilities, according to what is fair — but men have a degree over them. Allah is mighty and wise.

229. Divorce can happen twice. After that, either stay together kindly or separate with fairness. It's not allowed for you to take back anything you've given your wives, unless both of you fear you can't keep within Allah's limits. If you're worried they can't keep Allah's limits, there's no blame if she gives something up to end the marriage. These are Allah's limits — don't cross them. Whoever crosses Allah's limits, they are the ones who do wrong.

230. If a man divorces his wife a third time, she can't marry him again unless she first marries someone else. Then, if the second husband divorces her, there's no blame if she and her first husband return to each other — as long as they believe they can keep Allah's limits. These are Allah's limits, which He clearly explains for people who understand.

231. When you divorce women and their waiting period is almost finished, either keep them kindly or let them go kindly. Don't hold onto them just to hurt them or treat them unfairly. Whoever does that only hurts himself. Don't take Allah's verses lightly. Remember Allah's blessings on you, and the Book and wisdom He sent down to teach you. Always be mindful of Allah, and know that Allah knows everything.

232. When you divorce women and their waiting period is over, don't stop them from marrying their former husbands if they both agree kindly. This advice is given to those of you who believe in Allah and the Last Day. This is purer and better for you. Allah knows, and you don't know.

233. Mothers may nurse their babies for two full years, if they wish to complete the nursing period. It's the father's responsibility to provide food and clothing for the mother fairly. No one should be burdened beyond what they can handle. Neither mother nor father should be harmed because of their child. The same duty falls on the father's heir. If both parents agree to wean the baby earlier after discussing it together, there's no blame on them. And if you decide to have someone else nurse your child, there's no blame on you, as long as you pay fairly. Always be mindful of Allah, and know that Allah sees everything you do.

234. If any of you pass away and leave wives behind, they must wait four months and ten days before remarrying. After this waiting period, there's no blame on you for what they choose to do fairly for themselves. Allah is fully aware of everything you do.

235. There's no blame on you if you indirectly hint at marriage proposals to these women, or you keep your intentions to yourselves. Allah knows you'll think about them. But don't secretly promise marriage — just speak kindly and respectfully. Don't finalize the marriage contract until the waiting period is over. Remember, Allah knows what's in your hearts, so be careful. And know that Allah is forgiving and patient.

236. There's no blame on you if you divorce women before you've touched them or set a marriage gift for them. But give them a fair gift — the wealthy according to his means, and the poor according to his means — a fair gift as is proper. This is a duty for those who do good.

237. And if you divorce them before you've touched them, but after you've set a marriage gift, then give them half of what you decided — unless they forgive it, or the one who holds the marriage agreement forgives it. And forgiving is closer to being mindful of Allah. Don't forget kindness between yourselves. Allah sees clearly everything you do.

238. Take good care of your prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah with humble hearts.

239. If you're afraid, pray while walking or riding. But when you're safe again, remember Allah as He taught you what you didn't know before.

240. Those among you who pass away and leave wives behind should leave instructions to provide for their wives for a whole year without forcing them to leave their homes. But if they choose to leave on their own, there's no blame on you for whatever good choices they make for themselves. Allah is mighty and wise.

241. Divorced women should be given fair support. This is a duty for those who are mindful of Allah.

242. This is how Allah makes His verses clear to you, so you may understand.

243. Haven't you seen those who left their homes by the thousands, afraid of death? Allah said to them, "Die," and then He brought them back to life. Truly, Allah is generous to people, but most people aren't thankful.

244. Fight in Allah's way, and know that Allah hears and knows everything.

245. Who will lend Allah a good loan, so He will multiply it many times over? Allah alone holds back and gives freely, and to Him you'll all return.

246. Haven't you heard about the leaders of the Israelites after Moses? They said to their prophet, "Choose a king for us, and we'll fight in Allah's way." He replied, "What if fighting is commanded for you, but then you refuse to fight?" They answered, "Why wouldn't we fight in Allah's way, when we've been driven out of our homes and separated from our children?" But when fighting was commanded for them, most of them turned away. Allah knows well those who do wrong.

247. Their prophet told them, "Allah has chosen Saul to be your king." They said, "How can he rule over us? We deserve kingship more than he does, and he hasn't even been given much wealth." The prophet replied, "Allah has chosen him over you and has given him greater knowledge and strength. Allah gives authority to whoever He wishes. Allah is generous and all-knowing."

248. Their prophet also told them, "The sign of his kingship is that the Ark will come to you. In it is peace from your Lord, and things left behind by the families of Moses and Aaron. Angels will carry it. Truly, this is a clear sign for you, if you're believers."

249. When Saul marched out with his army, he said, "Allah will test you with a river. Whoever drinks from it is not with me, but whoever doesn't taste it is surely with me — except for those who scoop up just a handful with their hands." Yet most of them drank from it, except for a few. When he and the believers with him crossed the river, some said, "We have no strength today against Goliath and his army." But those who knew they would meet Allah said, "How many times has a small group defeated a large one, by Allah's permission? Allah is always with those who are patient."

250. When they faced Goliath and his army, they prayed, "Our Lord, pour patience over us, keep our feet steady, and help us against the disbelieving people."

251. So they defeated them by Allah's permission, and David killed Goliath. Allah gave David kingship and wisdom, and taught him whatever He wished. If Allah didn't make some people push back others, the earth would become corrupted — but Allah is full of kindness to all people.

252. These are Allah's verses that We recite to you in truth, and you are truly one of the messengers.

253. These messengers — We favored some above others. Among them were some who spoke directly with Allah, and some He raised high in rank. We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear miracles and supported him with the Holy Spirit. If Allah had wanted, those who came after the messengers wouldn't have fought each other after clear signs came to them. But they disagreed — some believed, and some disbelieved. If Allah had wanted, they wouldn't have fought, but Allah does whatever He wills.

254. Believers, give from what We have provided you, before a Day comes when there will be no trade, no friendship, and no one to speak up for you. Those who disbelieve — they are the wrongdoers.

255. Allah — there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the One Who sustains everything. He never gets sleepy, and He never sleeps. Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him. Who could ever speak up for someone else in front of Him, unless He allows it? He knows everything that's ahead of people and everything that's behind them. And no one can understand any part of His knowledge, except what He chooses to reveal. His Throne stretches over the heavens and the earth, and taking care of them never tires Him. He is the Highest, the Greatest.

256. There is no forcing anyone in religion. The right path has clearly become different from the wrong path. So whoever rejects false gods and believes in Allah has held tightly to the strongest handhold, one that will never break. Allah hears everything and knows everything.

257. Allah is the protector of those who believe. He brings them out of darkness into the light. But those who reject Allah — their protectors are false gods, who lead them out of the light into darkness. They are the people of the Fire, and they will stay there forever.

258. Haven't you heard about the man who argued with Abraham about his Lord, just because Allah had given him power? Abraham said, "My Lord is the One Who gives life and causes death." The man replied, "I can give life and cause death too." Abraham said, "Allah makes the sun rise from the east — so make it rise from the west." The disbeliever was shocked into silence. Allah does not guide people who do wrong.

259. Or think about the man who passed by a town that had fallen into ruin. He wondered, "How can Allah bring this town back to life after it has died?" So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then brought him back to life. Allah asked, "How long have you stayed here?" He answered, "A day — or maybe part of a day." Allah said, "No, you've been here for a hundred years. Look at your food and drink — they haven't gone bad. And look at your donkey. We did this to make you a sign for people. Now look at the bones — see how We put them together, then cover them with flesh." When it all became clear to him, he said, "Now I know that Allah has power over everything."

260. And remember when Abraham said, "My Lord, show me how You bring the dead back to life." Allah asked, "Don't you believe?" Abraham replied, "Yes, but I want my heart to feel completely sure." Allah said, "Then take four birds, train them to come to you, then place a piece of them on each mountain. After that, call them — they'll come flying back to you quickly. And know that Allah is Mighty and Wise."

261. The example of those who spend their wealth in Allah's way is like a single seed that grows seven ears of grain, each ear holding a hundred grains. Allah multiplies rewards for whoever He wills — Allah is Vast and All-Knowing.

262. Those who spend their wealth for Allah's sake, and then don't follow their giving with reminders or hurtful words, will have their reward with their Lord. They won't feel fear or sadness.

263. A kind word and forgiveness are better than charity followed by hurtful words. Allah is rich beyond need and patient.

264. Believers, don't cancel out your charity by reminding others of your generosity or hurting their feelings. That's like someone who gives their money just to show off, without believing in Allah or the Last Day. Their example is like a smooth rock covered with a thin layer of dirt — when heavy rain falls, it washes the dirt away, leaving the rock bare. They gain nothing from what they've done. Allah doesn't guide those who reject the truth.

265. But the example of those who spend their wealth seeking Allah's approval and strengthening their own souls is like a garden on a high hill. When heavy rain falls, it gives double the fruit, and even if heavy rain doesn't fall, a gentle drizzle is enough. Allah sees everything you do.

266. Would any of you like to have a garden filled with palm trees and grapevines, with rivers flowing beneath it, and all kinds of fruit growing there — but then old age comes, and your children are weak, and suddenly a fiery whirlwind strikes the garden and burns it all down? This is how Allah makes His verses clear to you, so you may think deeply.

267. Believers, give from the good things you've earned and from what We've grown for you from the earth. Don't choose worthless things to give away — things you'd only accept reluctantly yourselves. Know that Allah is Rich beyond need, Worthy of all praise.

268. Satan promises you poverty and urges you toward wrongdoing, but Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and generous blessings. Allah is All-Giving, All-Knowing.

269. He gives wisdom to whoever He wishes, and whoever is given wisdom has truly received great good. Only thoughtful people pay attention to this.

270. Whatever you give or whatever promises you make, Allah knows it all. And those who do wrong will have no helpers.

271. If you give charity openly, that's good. But if you keep it hidden and quietly give it to the poor, that's even better for you. It will erase some of your mistakes. Allah knows everything you do.

272. It's not your responsibility to guide people — Allah guides whoever He wishes. Whatever good you give is for your own benefit. And whatever you give should be only to seek Allah's approval. Whatever good you give will be fully returned to you, and you won't be treated unfairly.

273. Give to the poor who are held back in Allah's cause and can't travel freely to earn a living. Those who don't know them might think they're wealthy because they don't beg. You can recognize them by their humble appearance. They don't persistently ask people for help. Whatever good you give, Allah knows it well.

274. Those who give their wealth night and day, secretly and openly, will have their reward with their Lord. They'll have no fear, nor will they be sad.

275. Those who take interest will rise up on the Day of Judgment like someone driven to madness by Satan's touch. That's because they say, "Trading is just like interest." But Allah has allowed trading and forbidden interest. Whoever receives this warning from their Lord and stops — can keep what they earned before, and their case is left to Allah. But whoever goes back to it — those are the people of the Fire, and they will stay there forever.

276. Allah wipes out interest, but He blesses charity. Allah does not love anyone who stubbornly rejects Him and keeps doing wrong.

277. Those who believe, do good deeds, pray regularly, and give charity — they will have their reward with their Lord. They won't feel any fear, and they won't be sad.

278. You who believe, be mindful of Allah and leave behind whatever remains of interest, if you truly believe.

279. If you don't, then know that you're choosing war with Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you can have your original money back — without hurting others or being hurt yourselves.

280. If someone owes you money and is struggling, give them extra time until things get easier. But if you forgive the debt as charity, that's even better for you, if you only knew.

281. And be mindful of the Day when you'll return to Allah. Then every soul will be given exactly what it earned, and no one will be treated unfairly.

282. Believers, when you lend or borrow money for a fixed time, write it down clearly. Let a fair writer record it between you, and no writer should refuse to write, just as Allah taught him. Let him write, and let the person who owes the debt dictate clearly, honestly, and respectfully toward Allah, his Lord, without hiding anything. If the person owing the debt is young, weak, or unable to dictate clearly, then let his guardian dictate fairly for him. And have two men as witnesses from among you. If there aren't two men, then one man and two women you trust as witnesses, so if one woman forgets, the other can remind her. Witnesses shouldn't refuse when called upon. Don't get tired of writing down debts, whether small or large, along with the time they're due. This is fairer in Allah's sight, better proof, and helps you avoid doubts. But if it's an immediate trade you handle among yourselves, there's no blame if you don't write it down. Still, have witnesses when you trade. No writer or witness should be harmed — if you do harm them, it's wrong. Be mindful of Allah, and Allah will teach you. Allah knows everything.

283. If you're traveling and can't find someone to write things down, then leave something valuable as a guarantee. But if you trust each other, then the one trusted should honestly return what was trusted to him, and he should be mindful of Allah, his Lord. Don't hide your testimony — whoever hides it has a sinful heart. Allah knows everything you do.

284. Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah. Whether you show what's in your hearts or keep it hidden, Allah will hold you accountable for it. He forgives whoever He wills, and He punishes whoever He wills. Allah has power over everything.

285. The Messenger believes in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. They all believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers, saying, "We don't treat any of His messengers differently." And they say, "We hear and we obey. Forgive us, our Lord — to You is our final return."

286. Allah doesn't ask anyone to do more than they're able. Each person will have the good they earned, and will bear the consequences of the wrong they did. Our Lord, please don't blame us if we forget or make mistakes. Our Lord, don't place heavy burdens on us like You placed on people before us. Our Lord, don't make us carry what we can't handle. Forgive us, pardon us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against those who reject the truth.
