1. This is a message from Allah and His Messenger to those idol-worshipers you made promises with.

2. You can travel freely in the land for four months. But know that you can't escape from Allah, and Allah will shame those who don't believe.

3. And this is an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to all people on the day of the great pilgrimage: Allah and His Messenger have nothing to do with the idol-worshipers anymore. So if you say sorry and change your ways, that's better for you. But if you turn away, remember you can't escape from Allah. And tell those who don't believe they'll have a painful punishment.

4. But those idol-worshipers who kept their promises to you, didn't break their word, and didn't help anyone against you — keep your promises to them until the agreed time ends. Allah loves those who are careful to obey Him.

5. When the special months are over, fight the idol-worshipers wherever you find them. Catch them, surround them, and wait for them in every hiding place. But if they say sorry, pray regularly, and give charity, then let them go free. Allah is forgiving and kind.

6. If any idol-worshiper asks you for protection, protect him so he can hear Allah's words. Then take him safely to a place where he feels secure. That's because they're people who don't know.

7. How can idol-worshipers have promises with Allah and His Messenger? Except those you made promises with near the Sacred Mosque — as long as they keep their promises to you, you must keep your promises to them. Allah loves those who are careful to obey Him.

8. How can you trust them? If they get power over you, they won't care about promises or friendship. They say nice things to please you, but their hearts refuse, and most of them do bad things.

9. They traded Allah's verses for a small price, and they stopped people from following His way. What they did was very bad.

10. They don't care about promises or friendship when it comes to believers. They're the ones who cross the limits.

11. But if they say sorry, pray regularly, and give charity, then they're your brothers in religion. We explain the verses clearly for people who understand.

12. If they break their promises after making them, and say bad things about your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief. They don't keep their promises, so maybe they'll stop.

13. Won't you fight people who broke their promises, planned to drive out the Messenger, and attacked you first? Are you afraid of them? Allah deserves more that you fear Him, if you're believers.

14. Fight them, and Allah will punish them through your hands, and He will shame them, and He will help you win against them, and He will heal the hearts of believing people.

15. He will take away the anger from their hearts. Allah forgives whoever He wants. Allah knows everything and is very wise.

16. Did you think you would be left alone, before Allah shows who among you tries hard for Him, and who doesn't secretly choose friends other than Allah, His Messenger, and the believers? Allah knows everything you do.

17. Those who worship others besides Allah shouldn't take care of Allah's mosques, because they themselves admit they don't believe. All the good things they've done are wasted, and they'll stay in the Fire forever.

18. Only those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, pray regularly, give charity, and fear no one except Allah should take care of Allah's mosques. These people might be among those who follow the right path.

19. Do you think giving water to pilgrims and taking care of the Sacred Mosque is the same as believing in Allah and the Last Day and trying hard for Allah? They're not equal in Allah's eyes. Allah doesn't guide people who do wrong.

20. Those who believe, leave their homes for Allah, and try hard for Allah with their money and their lives have a higher place with Allah. They're the ones who win.

21. Their Lord gives them good news of kindness from Him, happiness, and gardens where they'll enjoy wonderful things forever.

22. They'll stay there always. Allah has a great reward for them.

23. You who believe, don't choose your fathers or brothers as close friends if they prefer disbelief over belief. Whoever chooses them as friends is doing wrong.

24. Say, "If your fathers, your children, your brothers, your husbands or wives, your families, the money you've earned, the business you're afraid of losing, and the homes you love are dearer to you than Allah, His Messenger, and trying hard for Him, then wait until Allah brings His decision. Allah doesn't guide people who disobey."

25. Allah helped you in many places, and on the day of Hunayn. You felt proud because there were so many of you, but that didn't help you at all. The earth felt tight around you, even though it was vast, and you turned and ran away.

26. Then Allah sent calmness down to His Messenger and the believers. He sent soldiers you couldn't see, and He punished those who disbelieved. That is the punishment for the disbelievers.

27. After that, Allah forgives whoever He wants. Allah is forgiving and kind.

28. Believers, those who worship idols are unclean, so they shouldn't come near the Sacred Mosque after this year. If you're worried about becoming poor, Allah will give you enough from His blessings if He wants. Allah knows everything and is wise.

29. Fight those who don't believe in Allah or the Last Day, who don't forbid what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, and who don't follow the true religion from among the People of the Book, until they pay the tax themselves while feeling humble.

30. The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allah," and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allah." These are just words they say with their mouths. They copy what disbelievers said before. May Allah destroy them! How can they turn away from the truth?

31. They took their religious leaders and priests as lords instead of Allah, and also the Messiah, son of Mary. But they were only told to worship one God. There is no god except Him. He is far above the partners they make for Him.

32. They want to put out Allah's light with their mouths, but Allah will make His light complete, even if the disbelievers don't like it.

33. He is the One Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the true religion, to make it win over all other religions — even if those who worship idols don't like it.

34. Believers, many religious leaders and priests take people's money in the wrong way, and they stop others from following Allah's way. Those who collect gold and silver, and don't spend it in Allah's way — tell them they'll have a painful punishment.

35. On the Day their gold and silver will be heated in the fire of Hell, their foreheads, sides, and backs will be burned with it. They'll be told, "This is what you saved for yourselves, so taste what you saved."

36. The number of months with Allah is twelve months, written in Allah's Book since the day He created the heavens and the earth. Four of these months are sacred. That's the right way, so don't do wrong to yourselves during these months. Fight all those who worship idols, just as they all fight you. And know that Allah is with those who are careful to obey Him.

37. Changing the sacred months is an extra act of disbelief. Those who disbelieve get confused by it. They make a month allowed one year and forbidden another year, to match the number of months Allah made sacred. So they allow what Allah has forbidden. Their bad actions seem good to them, but Allah doesn't guide people who disbelieve.

38. Believers, what's wrong with you? When you're asked to go out and help in Allah's way, you feel heavy and stick to the ground. Do you like this life more than the Hereafter? But the joy of this life is very small compared to the Hereafter.

39. If you don't go out to help, Allah will punish you with a painful punishment. He'll choose other people instead of you, and you can't harm Him at all. Allah has power over everything.

40. If you don't help him, remember that Allah already helped him when the disbelievers made him leave. He was the second of two people in the cave. He said to his friend, "Don't be sad, Allah is with us." Then Allah sent calmness down to him and helped him with soldiers you couldn't see. He made the disbelievers' words the lowest, and Allah's word is always the highest. Allah is mighty and wise.

41. Go out to help, whether it's easy or hard for you. Try your best with your money and yourselves in Allah's way. That's better for you, if you only knew.

42. If it was something easy to get, or a short trip, they would have followed you. But the journey seemed too long and hard for them. They'll promise by Allah, "If we could, we would have gone with you." They are hurting themselves by lying. Allah knows they're lying.

43. Allah has forgiven you. Why did you let them stay behind before you clearly knew who was truthful and who was lying?

44. Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day don't ask your permission to try their best with their money and themselves. Allah knows well those who are careful to obey Him.

45. Only those who don't believe in Allah and the Last Day ask your permission. Their hearts are full of doubts, and they keep going back and forth in their doubts.

46. If they really wanted to go out, they would have prepared for it. But Allah didn't like them going, so He held them back. They were told, "Stay behind with those who stay."

47. If they had gone out with you, they would have only caused trouble. They would have hurried around among you, trying to make problems. And some of you would have listened to them. Allah knows well those who do wrong.

48. They tried to make trouble before, and they turned things upside down for you. But then the truth came, and Allah's plan became clear, even though they didn't like it.

49. Some of them say, "Let me stay behind, and don't test me." But they're already being tested, and Hellfire surrounds those who don't believe in Allah.

50. If something good happens to you, it makes them unhappy. But if something bad happens to you, they say, "We made sure to be safe before," and they turn away happily.

51. Say, "Nothing will happen to us except what Allah has written for us. He is our Protector, so believers should trust Allah."

52. Say, "Are you waiting for anything to happen to us except one of two good things? But we're waiting for Allah to punish you Himself or through our hands. So wait — we're waiting with you."

53. Say, "Whether you give charity happily or unwillingly, it won't be accepted from you, because you've been people who disobey Allah."

54. The only reason their charity isn't accepted is because they don't believe in Allah and His Messenger. They only pray lazily, and they only give charity unwillingly.

55. So don't be amazed by their money or their children. Allah wants to punish them with these things in this life, and so that they die while they don't believe.

56. They promise by Allah that they're with you, but they're not really with you. They're just people who are afraid.

57. If they could find a safe place, caves, or somewhere to hide, they'd run quickly to it.

58. Some of them complain about how you give out charity. If they're given some, they're happy. But if they're not given anything, they get angry.

59. If only they were happy with what Allah and His Messenger gave them, and said, "Allah is enough for us. Allah and His Messenger will give us from His gifts. We hope only in Allah."

60. Charity is only for the poor, the needy, the people who collect it, those whose hearts need to be comforted, freeing people, helping those in debt, for Allah's cause, and helping travelers. This is a rule from Allah, and Allah knows everything and is very wise.

61. Some of them hurt the Prophet and say, "He listens to everyone." Say, "He listens to what's good for you. He believes in Allah, trusts the believers, and is kind to those of you who believe." Those who hurt Allah's Messenger will have a painful punishment.

62. They promise by Allah to please you, but Allah and His Messenger deserve to be pleased more than anyone else, if they're believers.

63. Don't they know that whoever goes against Allah and His Messenger will have the fire of Hell, staying there forever? That's the greatest shame.

64. The hypocrites are worried that a chapter might come down about them, telling everyone what's hidden in their hearts. Say, "Go ahead and laugh — Allah will surely show what you're afraid of."

65. If you ask them, they'll say, "We were just joking and playing around." Say, "Were you making fun of Allah, His verses, and His Messenger?"

66. Don't make excuses. You stopped believing after you believed. Even if We forgive some of you, We'll punish others, because they were criminals.

67. The hypocrite men and women are all alike. They tell others to do bad things, and stop them from doing good things, and they don't like giving to others. They forgot Allah, so He forgot them. The hypocrites are the ones who disobey Allah.

68. Allah promises the hypocrite men and women, and those who don't believe, the fire of Hell. They'll stay there forever. It's enough punishment for them. Allah has cursed them, and they'll have a punishment that never ends.

69. You're just like the people before you. They were stronger than you, and had more money and children. They enjoyed their share of good things, and you've enjoyed your share, just like they did. You talked about things you shouldn't, just like they did. All their good deeds were lost in this world and the Hereafter. They're the ones who lost everything.

70. Didn't they hear the stories of the people before them? The people of Noah, Aad, Thamud, Abraham's people, the people of Midian, and the towns that were turned upside down? Their messengers came to them with clear proofs. Allah didn't treat them unfairly — they treated themselves unfairly.

71. The believing men and women are friends and helpers to each other. They tell others to do good things, and stop them from doing bad things. They pray regularly, give charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will show kindness to them. Allah is strong and wise.

72. Allah promises the believing men and women beautiful gardens, with rivers flowing under them, where they'll live forever, and lovely homes in gardens of happiness. But Allah's happiness with them is even greater. That's the greatest success.

73. Prophet, work hard against those who don't believe and the hypocrites, and be firm with them. Their home will be Hell — and that's a terrible place to end up.

74. They swear by Allah that they didn't say anything wrong, but they did say words of disbelief, and they stopped believing after accepting Islam. They planned to do something bad, but they couldn't do it. They're angry only because Allah and His Messenger gave them plenty from His kindness. If they turn back to Allah, it'll be better for them. But if they turn away, Allah will punish them painfully in this world and the Hereafter. They'll have no friend or helper anywhere on earth.

75. Some of them promised Allah, "If He gives us from His kindness, we'll surely give charity and be good people."

76. But when He gave them from His kindness, they became greedy and turned away.

77. Because they broke their promise to Allah and kept lying, He put hypocrisy in their hearts until the day they meet Him.

78. Don't they know that Allah knows their secrets and their private talks, and that Allah knows everything hidden?

79. Some people make fun of the believers who willingly give charity, and they laugh at those who can only give a little. Allah will mock them, and they'll have a painful punishment.

80. Whether you ask Allah to forgive them or not, even if you ask seventy times, He will never forgive them. That's because they didn't believe in Allah and His Messenger. Allah doesn't guide people who keep doing wrong.

81. Those who were left behind were happy to stay at home instead of going with Allah's Messenger. They didn't want to work hard or spend their money for Allah. They said, "Don't go out in the heat!" Say, "The fire of Hell is much hotter," if only they understood.

82. Let them laugh a little now — they'll cry a lot later, because of what they've done.

83. If Allah brings you back to some of them, and they ask to go out with you, say, "You'll never go out with me, and you'll never fight an enemy with me. You chose to stay behind the first time, so stay behind with those who stayed behind."

84. Don't ever pray for any of them who dies, and don't stand by their grave. They didn't believe in Allah and His Messenger, and they died disobeying Allah.

85. Don't let their money or their children amaze you. Allah only wants to punish them with these things in this life, and they'll die as disbelievers.

86. When a chapter comes down saying, "Believe in Allah and work hard with His Messenger," the rich ones among them ask your permission, saying, "Let us stay behind with those who sit at home."

87. They're happy to stay behind with those who stayed behind. Their hearts are closed, so they don't understand.

88. But the Messenger and those who believe with him work hard, giving their money and themselves for Allah. They'll have all good things, and they'll be the winners.

89. Allah has prepared beautiful gardens for them, with rivers flowing underneath, where they'll live forever. That's the greatest success!

90. Some desert people came with excuses, so they would be allowed to stay behind. Others lied to Allah and His Messenger and stayed home. Those who disbelieve among them will get a painful punishment.

91. There's no blame on weak people, or sick people, or those who don't have money to spend, if they're sincere to Allah and His Messenger. There's no reason to blame those who do good. Allah is forgiving and kind.

92. There's also no blame on those who came to you, asking for something to ride, and you said, "I don't have anything for you to ride." They turned away with tears filling their eyes, because they were sad they didn't have money to spend.

93. The blame is only on those who ask your permission to stay behind, even though they're rich. They're happy to stay with those who remain at home. Allah has sealed their hearts, so they don't understand.

94. They'll give you excuses when you return to them. Say, "Don't make excuses. We won't believe you. Allah has already told us about you. Allah will see your actions, and so will His Messenger. Then you'll return to the One Who knows everything hidden and everything seen, and He'll tell you what you've done."

95. They'll swear by Allah to you when you go back to them, hoping you'll leave them alone. So leave them alone. They're impure, and their home will be Hell, as a punishment for what they've done.

96. They swear to you, hoping you'll be pleased with them. But even if you're pleased with them, Allah isn't pleased with people who disobey Him.

97. The desert people are stronger in disbelief and pretending to believe, and they're more likely not to know the rules Allah gave His Messenger. Allah knows everything and is wise.

98. Some desert people think giving charity is a loss, and they wait for bad things to happen to you. But bad things will happen to them instead. Allah hears everything and knows everything.

99. But some desert people believe in Allah and the Last Day. They see the charity they give as a way to come closer to Allah and to receive the Messenger's prayers. Yes, it's truly a way for them to come closer. Allah will bring them into His kindness. Allah is forgiving and kind.

100. The first people who believed — the ones who left their homes, the ones who helped them, and those who followed them by doing good — Allah is happy with them, and they're happy with Him. He has prepared beautiful gardens for them, with rivers flowing underneath, where they'll stay forever. That's the greatest success.

101. Some people around you from the desert, and even some from the city, pretend to believe but don't really mean it. They're very good at pretending — you don't know who they are, but We know them. We'll punish them twice, then they'll be brought back to a big punishment.

102. But there are others who admit their mistakes. They've mixed good actions with bad ones. Allah may forgive them, because Allah is Forgiving and Kind.

103. Take charity from their money, to purify them and make them grow. Pray for them — your prayers make them feel calm and peaceful. Allah hears everything and knows everything.

104. Don't they know that it's Allah Who accepts when His servants turn back to Him, and He takes their charity? Allah forgives and is very kind.

105. Say, "Do good actions. Allah will see what you do, and so will His Messenger and the believers. Then you'll return to Allah, Who knows everything hidden and everything seen, and He'll tell you all about what you used to do."

106. And there are others who must wait for Allah's decision. He might punish them, or He might forgive them. Allah knows everything and is very wise.

107. Some people built a mosque to cause harm, disbelief, and to divide the believers. They built it to help those who fought against Allah and His Messenger before. They'll promise, "We only wanted to do something good!" But Allah knows they're lying.

108. Never pray in that mosque. A mosque built from the first day on respect for Allah is better for you to pray in. In it are people who love to keep themselves clean, and Allah loves those who keep themselves clean.

109. Which is better: someone who builds on respect for Allah and His happiness, or someone who builds on the edge of a crumbling cliff that falls down with him into the fire of Hell? Allah doesn't guide people who do wrong.

110. The building they made will always fill their hearts with doubt, until their hearts are torn apart. Allah knows everything and is very wise.

111. Allah has bought from the believers their lives and their money, and in return He gives them Paradise. They fight in Allah's way — they may have to kill or be killed. This is a true promise from Allah, written in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran. No one keeps promises better than Allah. So be happy about the deal you've made with Him — that's the greatest success.

112. Those who turn back to Allah, who worship Him, who praise Him, who travel for His sake, who bow down and put their faces on the ground in prayer, who tell others to do good and stop them from doing wrong, and who carefully obey Allah's rules — give good news to the believers.

113. It's not right for the Prophet and the believers to ask Allah to forgive those who worship others besides Allah — even if they're close relatives — after it's clear they're people of the Fire.

114. Abraham asked Allah to forgive his father only because he had promised him. But when Abraham saw clearly that his father was an enemy of Allah, he stopped asking forgiveness for him. Abraham was very gentle and patient.

115. Allah wouldn't let people lose their way after guiding them, until He clearly shows them what they should stay away from. Allah knows everything.

116. Allah rules the heavens and the earth. He gives life and causes death. Besides Allah, you have no protector and no helper.

117. Allah forgave the Prophet, the people who moved away from their homes for Allah, and the people who helped them in Medina. They followed the Prophet during a very hard time, even though some of their hearts almost lost courage. Then Allah forgave them. He is very kind and caring toward them.

118. And Allah forgave the three who were left behind. They felt the earth was tight around them, even though it's wide, and their own hearts felt tight too. They realized there's no safe place from Allah, except with Him. Then He forgave them, so they would turn back to Him. Allah always accepts those who turn back to Him, and He's very caring.

119. Believers, be mindful of Allah, be with those who are truthful.

120. It wasn't right for the people of Medina and those around them to stay behind from Allah's Messenger, or to care more about themselves than about him. That's because whenever they feel thirsty, tired, or hungry for Allah's sake, or step into a place that upsets those who disbelieve, or win against an enemy — Allah writes it down as a good deed for them. Allah never wastes the reward of those who do good.

121. And whenever they spend anything, small or big, or cross any valley, it's written down for them. Allah will reward them with the best for what they did.

122. The believers shouldn't all go out together. Instead, a group from each community should stay behind to learn and understand their religion well. Then they can teach their people when they return, so they can be careful to obey Allah.

123. You who believe, fight those disbelievers who are closest to you, and let them see you're strong. And remember, Allah is always with those who are careful to obey Him.

124. Whenever a chapter is sent down, some of them ask, "Did this make any of you believe more?" But those who believe become even stronger in their faith, and they're happy about it.

125. But those who have sickness in their hearts, it adds more badness to the badness they already have, and they die as disbelievers.

126. Don't they see they're tested once or twice every year? But still, they don't turn back to Allah, and they don't learn their lesson.

127. Whenever a chapter is sent down, they look at each other, saying quietly, "Is anyone watching us?" Then they quickly leave. Allah turns their hearts away, because they're people who don't understand.

128. A Messenger has come to you from among yourselves. It hurts him when you're in trouble, he cares deeply about you, and he's gentle and kind to the believers.

129. But if they turn away, say, "Allah is enough for me. There is no god except Him. I put my trust in Him, and He is the Lord of the mighty throne."
