In the name of Allah, the Most Kind, the Most Caring.

1. Those who disbelieve and stop others from following Allah's way — He makes their actions useless.

2. But those who believe, do good things, and believe in what was given to Muhammad — which is the truth from their Lord — Allah forgives their mistakes and gives them peace of mind.

3. This is because those who disbelieve follow what is false, and those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. This is how Allah gives clear examples for people.

4. When you meet those who disbelieve in battle, strike their necks. When you have defeated them, tie them up tightly. After that, you can either set them free as a kindness or let them go for something in return, until the war ends. Allah could defeat them Himself if He wanted, but He tests some of you through others. Those who are killed for Allah — He will never let their good actions be lost.

5. He will guide them and give them peace of mind.

6. And He will bring them into Paradise, which He has already described to them.

7. Believers, if you stand up for Allah, He will help you and make you strong.

8. But those who disbelieve — they will be in trouble, and Allah makes their actions useless.

9. This is because they hated what Allah sent down, so He made their actions worthless.

10. Haven't they traveled around the earth and seen what happened to the people before them? Allah destroyed them, and the same will happen to disbelievers.

11. This is because Allah protects those who believe, but the disbelievers have no one to protect them.

12. Allah will bring those who believe and do good things into gardens with rivers flowing beneath them. But those who disbelieve — they enjoy themselves and eat just like animals eat, and the Fire will be their home.

13. Many towns were stronger than the town that made you leave, but We destroyed them, and no one helped them.

14. Can someone who knows the truth from his Lord be the same as someone who thinks his bad actions are good — and follows his own desires?

15. Paradise, promised to those who are careful to obey Allah, has rivers of fresh water that never goes bad, rivers of milk that always tastes good, rivers of delicious drink, and rivers of pure honey. They will have all kinds of tasty fruits there, and forgiveness from their Lord. Can they be like those who stay forever in the Fire and are given boiling water that hurts their stomachs?

16. Some of them listen carefully to you, but when they leave, they ask those who have knowledge, "What did he just say?" These are the ones whose hearts Allah has sealed, and they follow their own wishes.

17. But those who follow the right way — Allah gives them even more guidance and helps them to always do good.

18. Are they waiting for the Hour to suddenly come to them? Its signs have already come. But when it finally arrives, how will remembering help them?

19. So know that there is no god except Allah, and ask forgiveness for your mistakes and for the believing men and women. Allah knows exactly where you go and where you stay.

20. The believers say, "Why isn't a chapter sent down?" But when a clear chapter is sent down, and it mentions fighting, you see those with sickness in their hearts looking at you as if they're about to faint from fear of dying. How terrible for them.

21. They should obey and say good things. Then, when it's time to act, if they were honest with Allah, it would be better for them.

22. Is it possible that if you turn away, you will make trouble on earth and break your family ties?

23. Those are the ones Allah has cursed. He made them deaf and blind.

24. Don't they think carefully about the Quran? Or are there locks on their hearts?

25. Those who turned back after the right way became clear to them — Satan tricked them and gave them false hopes.

26. That's because they said to those who disliked what Allah sent down, "We'll obey you in some things." But Allah knows their secrets.

27. How will it be when the angels take their souls, hitting their faces and backs?

28. That's because they followed what made Allah unhappy, and they disliked what pleased Him. So He made all their good deeds worthless.

29. Do those with sickness in their hearts think Allah won't show their hidden feelings?

30. If We wanted, We could show them to you clearly, and you'd know them by their marks. And you'll surely recognize them by the way they speak. Allah knows everything you do.

31. We'll test you until We clearly know those among you who work hard for Allah and those who are patient. And We'll test your stories.

32. Those who disbelieve, stop others from following Allah's way, and go against the Messenger after the right way became clear to them — they can't harm Allah at all. And He'll make all their deeds worthless.

33. Believers, obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and don't let your deeds go to waste.

34. Those who disbelieve, stop others from following Allah's way, and then die as disbelievers — Allah won't forgive them.

35. So don't lose heart or ask for peace while you're stronger. Allah is with you, and He won't forget your deeds.

36. This life is only play and fun. But if you believe and are careful to obey Allah, He'll reward you, and He doesn't ask you for your money.

37. If He asked you for your money and kept asking, you'd become stingy, and your hidden feelings would come out.

38. Here you are, being asked to spend in Allah's way. But some of you are stingy. Whoever is stingy is only hurting themselves. Allah is rich and doesn't need anything, but you're the ones who need Him. If you turn away, He'll replace you with other people, and they won't be like you.
