In the name of Allah, the Most Kind, the Most Caring.
1. People, be careful to obey your Lord, Who created you from one human being. From him, He created his partner, and from the two of them, He spread many men and women. Respect Allah, Who you ask for help, and respect family ties. Allah is always watching over you.
2. Give orphans their money, and don't trade bad things for good things. Don't mix their money with yours and take it — this is a very big sin.
3. If you're worried you won't be fair to orphans, then marry women you like — two, three, or four. But if you're afraid you can't treat them fairly, then marry only one, or stay with those you already take care of. This way, you won't be unfair.
4. Give women their marriage gifts kindly. But if they happily give you back some of it, you can enjoy it freely.
5. Don't give your money to people who aren't wise enough to handle it. Allah made this money a way for you to live. Instead, feed them, clothe them, and speak kindly to them.
6. Test orphans until they're old enough to marry. If you see they're responsible, give them their money. Don't waste it or quickly spend it before they grow up. If you're rich, don't take anything. If you're poor, take only what you truly need. When you give them their money, have witnesses there. Allah is enough to keep track of everything.
7. Men get a share of what their parents and relatives leave behind, and women also get a share of what their parents and relatives leave behind — whether it's a little or a lot. This share is set by Allah.
8. If relatives, orphans, or poor people are there when you're dividing the inheritance, give them something from it, and speak kindly to them.
9. People should worry about leaving behind weak children who might suffer. So they should respect Allah and always speak the truth.
10. Those who unfairly take the money of orphans are actually swallowing fire into their bellies. Soon, they'll enter a blazing fire.
11. Allah teaches you about your children. A boy gets the same share as two girls. If there are only girls, more than two, they get two-thirds of what their parent leaves behind. If there's only one girl, she gets half. Each parent gets one-sixth of what their child leaves behind, if the child had children. But if the child had no children, and the parents inherit everything, the mother gets one-third. If the child had brothers or sisters, the mother gets one-sixth. All this happens after paying any debts or following instructions the person left behind. You don't know who will help you more — your parents or your children. This is Allah's rule. Allah knows everything and is very wise.
12. You get half of what your wives leave behind, if they had no children. But if they had children, you get one-fourth of what they leave. This happens after paying any debts or following instructions they left behind. Your wives get one-fourth of what you leave behind, if you had no children. But if you had children, your wives get one-eighth of what you leave. This happens after paying any debts or following instructions you left behind. If a man or woman dies without children or parents, but has a brother or sister, each brother or sister gets one-sixth. If there are more brothers and sisters, they all share one-third. This happens after paying any debts or following instructions the person left behind, without hurting anyone. This is Allah's instruction. Allah knows everything and is gentle.
13. These are Allah's rules. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He will bring them into beautiful gardens, with rivers flowing underneath. They will stay there forever. That is the greatest success.
14. But whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, and breaks His rules, He will put them into a fire, where they will stay forever. They will have a humiliating punishment.
15. If any women among you do something very wrong, ask four people from your group to clearly say what they saw. If they say it's true, keep those women at home until they die or until Allah makes another way for them.
16. If two men among you do the same wrong thing, punish or warn them. But if they feel sorry and change their ways, leave them alone. Allah always accepts those who repent, and He is very kind.
17. Allah accepts repentance from those who do wrong things out of ignorance, and then soon feel sorry and repent. Allah accepts these people's repentance. Allah knows everything and is very wise.
18. But repentance isn't accepted from those who keep doing bad things until they're about to die, then say, "Now I'm sorry." It's also not accepted from those who die while they disbelieve. For those people, We've prepared a painful punishment.
19. You who believe, it is not allowed for you to inherit women against their will. And do not force them to give back what you gave them, unless they have clearly done something very wrong. Live with them in a good way. Even if you don't like them, maybe you dislike something, but Allah puts a lot of good in it.
20. If you want to marry someone else instead of your wife, and you've already given her many gifts, don't take anything back. Would you take it back unfairly and do something clearly wrong?
21. How could you take it back after you've shared your lives together, and the women made a strong promise with you?
22. And don't marry women who were married to your fathers, except what already happened before. Doing that is very wrong, hateful, and a very bad way to behave.
23. You can't marry your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your aunts — your father's sisters and your mother's sisters — your nieces from your brother or sister, your mothers who fed you milk, your sisters through breastfeeding, your wives' mothers, your stepdaughters who live with you from wives you've married — but if you haven't married those wives yet, it's okay — your sons' wives, or two sisters at the same time, except what already happened before. Allah is forgiving and kind.
24. Also, you can't marry women who are already married, except women you're already responsible for. This is Allah's rule for you. But you're allowed to marry other women, as long as you marry them properly, giving them their gifts, and not committing wrong things or having secret boyfriends or girlfriends. If you marry them, give them their gifts as an obligation. There's no blame if you both agree to something different afterward. Allah knows everything and is very wise.
25. If you can't marry free believing women, then marry believing girls under your care, with their family's permission. Give them their gifts kindly, marrying them properly — not secretly or having secret relationships. If after marriage they do something very wrong, their punishment is half of what free women would get. This rule is for those of you who worry about doing wrong. But being patient is better for you. Allah is forgiving and kind.
26. Allah wants to make things clear for you, guide you to the good ways of people before you, and forgive you. Allah knows everything and is very wise.
27. Allah wants to forgive you, but those who follow their own wishes want you to go far away from the right path.
28. Allah wants to make things easier for you, because humans were created weak.
29. Believers, don't take each other's money unfairly — only trade fairly, when you both agree. And don't kill yourselves or each other. Allah has always been kind to you.
30. Whoever does that on purpose and unfairly, We'll put them into a Fire. That's easy for Allah to do.
31. If you stay away from the big sins you're told not to do, We'll erase your mistakes and welcome you into a wonderful place.
32. Don't wish for what Allah gave others instead of you. Men will get rewards for the good they do, and women will get rewards for the good they do. Ask Allah for His kindness. Allah has always known everything.
33. For everyone, We made clear who should get what parents and close relatives leave behind. And give the right share to those you've promised to care for. Allah sees everything clearly.
34. Men take care of women, because Allah gave some people more responsibilities than others, and because men spend from their money to support them. Good women obey Allah and protect what's important, even when no one sees them, because Allah protects them. If you're worried that some women aren't being respectful, first talk kindly to them, then don't share their beds, then discipline them. But if they listen to you, don't be unfair to them. Allah has always been Most High, Most Great.
35. If you're worried that a husband and wife might break apart, send someone fair from his family and someone fair from her family to help them. If they both really want to fix things, Allah will help them get along again. Allah has always known everything and understands completely.
36. Worship Allah, and don't worship anything else besides Him. Be kind to your parents, your relatives, orphans, poor people, neighbors who are close to you, neighbors who live farther away, friends who are near you, travelers who need help, and people you're responsible for. Allah doesn't like people who show off and act proudly.
37. Those are the ones who are stingy, tell others to be stingy, and hide the good things Allah gave them. We have prepared a shameful punishment for those who don't believe.
38. And those who spend their money just to show off to people, and don't believe in Allah or the Last Day — whoever has Satan as a friend has a very bad friend.
39. What harm would it do them if they believed in Allah and the Last Day, and shared some of what Allah gave them? Allah knows everything about them.
40. Allah is never unfair, not even as tiny as a little speck. If you do something good, He multiplies it and gives you a wonderful reward from Himself.
41. How will it be when We bring a witness from every group of people, and We bring you as a witness about these people?
42. On that day, those who didn't believe and disobeyed the Messenger will wish the earth would cover them up. They won't be able to hide anything from Allah.
43. Believers, don't come near prayer when you're drunk, until you clearly know what you're saying. And don't pray when you're unclean — unless you're traveling — until you've washed yourselves. If you're sick, or traveling, or you've just used the bathroom, or you've touched women, and you can't find water, then use clean earth. Wipe your faces and hands with it. Allah is always forgiving and kind.
44. Haven't you seen those who were given part of the Book? They choose the wrong path, and they want you to lose your way too.
45. Allah knows best who your enemies are. Allah is enough as a protector, and Allah is enough as a helper.
46. Some of those who follow the Jewish faith change words from their right places. They say, "We hear, but we won't obey," and "Listen, but may you never hear," and "Ra'ina," twisting their tongues and making fun of the religion. If only they had said, "We hear and we obey," and "Listen," and "Unzurna," it would have been better and more correct for them. But Allah has cursed them because they don't believe, so only a few of them will ever believe.
47. O you who were given the Book, believe in what We have sent down, confirming what you already have, before We erase faces and turn them backward, or curse them as We cursed the people who broke the Sabbath. Allah's command always happens.
48. Allah doesn't forgive anyone who worships others alongside Him, but He forgives anything else for whoever He wants. Whoever worships others besides Allah has done a terrible sin.
49. Haven't you seen those who praise themselves? But it's Allah Who makes pure whoever He wants, and they won't be treated unfairly, not even a tiny bit.
50. Look how they make up lies about Allah. That's clearly a big sin.
51. Haven't you seen those who were given part of the Book? They believe in false gods and evil powers, and they say about the disbelievers, "These people are on a better path than the believers."
52. Those are the ones Allah has cursed. And whoever Allah curses, you'll never find anyone to help them.
53. Do they have any share of the kingdom? If they did, they wouldn't give people even the smallest thing.
54. Or are they jealous of people because of what Allah gave them from His favor? We gave Abraham's family the Book and wisdom, and We gave them a great kingdom.
55. Some of them believed in it, and some turned away from it. Hellfire is enough as a burning punishment.
56. Those who disbelieve in Our verses, We'll put them into a Fire. Every time their skin is burned away, We'll give them new skin, so they can feel the punishment. Allah is mighty and wise.
57. But those who believe and do good things, We'll bring them into beautiful gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, and they'll stay there forever. They'll have pure companions there, and We'll bring them into cool, peaceful shade.
58. Allah tells you to give things back to their owners, and when you judge between people, judge fairly. Allah gives you the best advice. Allah hears and sees everything.
59. You who believe, obey Allah, obey the Messenger, and obey your leaders. If you disagree about something, take it back to Allah and the Messenger, if you really believe in Allah and the Last Day. That's the best way and leads to the best result.
60. Haven't you seen those who say they believe in what was given to you and what was given before you? But they still want to go to false judges, even though they were told not to believe in them. Satan wants to lead them far away from the right path.
61. When someone says to them, "Come to what Allah has given and to the Messenger," you see those who pretend to believe turning away from you completely.
62. What will they do when trouble comes to them because of the wrong things they've done? Then they'll come to you, swearing by Allah, "We only wanted to do good and make peace!"
63. Allah knows what's in their hearts. So turn away from them, but still advise them, and speak to them in a way that touches their hearts.
64. We only sent messengers so people would obey them, by Allah's permission. If they had come to you after doing wrong, asked Allah to forgive them, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them too, they would have found Allah always ready to forgive and very kind.
65. But no, by your Lord, they won't truly believe until they let you judge their disagreements, and then feel no unhappiness about your decision, and accept it completely.
66. If We had told them, "Give up your lives," or "Leave your homes," only a few of them would have done it. But if they had done what they were advised, it would have been better for them and made them stronger.
67. Then We would have given them a great reward from Us.
68. And We would have guided them to a straight path.
69. Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger will be with those Allah has blessed — the prophets, the truthful people, those who gave their lives for Allah, and the good people. What wonderful friends they are!
70. That's a special gift from Allah, and Allah knows everything perfectly.
71. You who believe, be careful and stay ready. Go out to defend in small groups or all together.
72. Some of you hold back. If something bad happens to you, they say, "Allah was kind to me, because I wasn't there with them."
73. But if something good comes to you from Allah, they say — as if they were never your friends — "I wish I had been with them, so I could have won something great too."
74. Those who choose the Hereafter instead of this life should fight bravely for Allah. Whoever fights for Allah — whether they are killed or win — We will give them a great reward.
75. Why don't you fight for Allah and for the weak people — men, women, and children — who pray, "Our Lord, take us away from this town, because its people are unfair. Give us someone from You to protect us, and someone from You to help us."
76. Those who believe fight for Allah, and those who disbelieve fight for false gods. So stand against the friends of Satan, because Satan's tricks are weak.
77. Didn't you see those who were told, "Hold back your hands, pray regularly, and give charity"? But when fighting was commanded, some of them became as scared of people as they are of Allah, or even more scared. They said, "Our Lord, why did You tell us to fight? Couldn't You wait a little longer?" Say, "The joys of this life are small, but the Hereafter is better for those who are careful to obey Allah. You won't be treated unfairly, not even a tiny bit."
78. Wherever you are, death will find you — even if you're in strong, high towers. When something good happens to them, they say, "This is from Allah." But when something bad happens, they say, "This is your fault." Say, "Everything comes from Allah." What's wrong with these people? They hardly understand anything.
79. Whatever good happens to you is from Allah, and whatever bad happens to you is because of yourself. We sent you as a messenger to all people, and Allah is enough as a witness.
80. Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah. But whoever turns away — We didn't send you to watch over them.
81. They say, "We obey." But when they leave you, some of them secretly plan something different from what they said. Allah writes down everything they secretly plan. So don't worry about them, and trust in Allah. Allah is the best One to take care of you.
82. Don't they think carefully about the Quran? If it came from anyone other than Allah, they would find many contradictions in it.
83. When they hear news about safety or danger, they quickly spread it around. But if they had told it to the Messenger and the leaders among them, those who understand things would have known what to do. If it wasn't for Allah's kindness and mercy, most of you would have followed Satan.
84. So fight for Allah's cause. You're only responsible for yourself, but encourage the believers. Maybe Allah will stop the power of those who disbelieve. Allah is stronger and can punish much more severely.
85. Whoever helps someone do something good will share in the reward. And whoever helps someone do something bad will share in the blame. Allah watches carefully over everything.
86. When someone greets you kindly, greet them back with something even kinder, or at least the same. Allah keeps track of everything.
87. Allah — there is no god except Him. He will surely gather you all together on the Day of Judgment. There's no doubt about it. No one speaks more truthfully than Allah.
88. Why are you divided into two groups about the hypocrites? Allah has turned them away because of the bad things they've done. Do you want to guide people whom Allah has let go astray? Whoever Allah lets go astray, you'll never find a way to guide them.
89. They wish you would disbelieve, just like they disbelieved, so you'd all be the same. Don't take them as friends until they move away to follow Allah's way. But if they turn away, then catch them and fight them wherever you find them. Don't take them as friends or helpers.
90. But don't fight those who join people you have a peace agreement with, or those who come to you because they don't want to fight you or their own people. If Allah wanted, He could have let them fight you. But if they leave you alone, don't fight you, and offer you peace, then Allah doesn't allow you to harm them.
91. You'll find others who want to be safe from you and safe from their own people. But whenever they're tempted to do wrong, they fall right into it. If they don't leave you alone, don't offer you peace, and don't stop fighting you, then catch them and fight them wherever you find them. Against these people, We have given you clear permission.
92. A believer should never kill another believer, except by accident. If someone kills a believer by mistake, they must free a believing captive and give money to the family of the person who died, unless the family kindly forgives it. If the believer who died belonged to people who are your enemies, then the one who made the mistake must free a believing captive. If the believer who died belonged to people who have a peace agreement with you, then the one who made the mistake must free a believing captive and give money to the family. If someone can't do that, they must fast for two months in a row, to repent to Allah. Allah knows everything and is very wise.
93. Whoever kills a believer on purpose will be punished in Hellfire, staying there forever. Allah will be angry with them, will curse them, and will prepare a terrible punishment for them.
94. Believers, when you travel to do good things for Allah, be careful and make sure before you act. Don't say to someone who greets you with peace, "You're not a believer," just because you want things from this life. Allah has many gains for you. Remember, you were like them before, but Allah was kind to you. So be careful and make sure. Allah knows everything you do.
95. Believers who stay behind without a good reason aren't equal to those who work hard and struggle for Allah with their money and themselves. Allah gives a higher level to those who struggle with their money and themselves than to those who stay behind. But Allah promises good things to both. Still, He gives a great reward to those who struggle, more than to those who stay behind.
96. He gives them special levels, forgiveness, and kindness. Allah is always forgiving and kind.
97. When the angels take away the souls of people who were unfair to themselves, they ask them, "What were you doing?" They answer, "We were weak and helpless on earth." The angels say, "Wasn't Allah's earth big enough for you to move somewhere else?" Those people will go to Hellfire, and that's a terrible place to end up.
98. But this doesn't include the truly weak and helpless men, women, and children who can't find a way out or don't know what to do.
99. Allah may forgive those people. Allah is always forgiving and kind.
100. Whoever leaves their home to move somewhere else for Allah will find many safe places and plenty of room on earth. If someone leaves home to go to Allah and His Messenger, but then dies on the way, Allah will surely reward them. Allah is always forgiving and kind.
101. When you travel around the land, it's okay to shorten your prayers if you're afraid that disbelievers might harm you. The disbelievers are clearly your enemies.
102. When you're with them and lead them in prayer, let one group pray with you while holding their weapons. When they finish praying, they should stand guard behind you. Then another group, who hasn't prayed yet, should come and pray with you. They should also be careful and hold their weapons. The disbelievers wish you'd forget your weapons and things, so they could suddenly attack you. But it's okay to put down your weapons if you're bothered by rain or if you're sick. Still, always be careful. Allah has prepared a shameful punishment for the disbelievers.
103. When you've finished praying, remember Allah while standing, sitting, or lying down. When you're safe again, perform your prayers properly. Prayer is something believers must do at set times.
104. Don't get tired of chasing after those people. If you're hurting, remember they're hurting just like you. But you hope for something from Allah that they don't hope for. Allah knows everything and is very wise.
105. We sent down the Book to you with truth, so you can judge between people the way Allah shows you. Don't argue for those who betray others.
106. Ask Allah to forgive you. Allah is always Forgiving and Kind.
107. Don't argue for those who cheat themselves. Allah doesn't love anyone who cheats a lot and does bad things.
108. They hide from people, but they can't hide from Allah. He's with them when they secretly say things He doesn't like. Allah completely surrounds everything they do.
109. Here you are, arguing for them in this life. But who will argue for them with Allah on the Day of Judgment? Who will protect them then?
110. Anyone who does something bad or wrongs themselves, then asks Allah to forgive them, will find Allah very forgiving and very kind.
111. Anyone who does something wrong only hurts themselves. Allah knows everything and is very wise.
112. Anyone who does something wrong or bad, then blames an innocent person, has done something terrible and clearly wrong.
113. If it wasn't for Allah's kindness and mercy to you, a group of them would have tried to trick you. But they only trick themselves, and they can't harm you at all. Allah sent down the Book and wisdom to you, and taught you things you didn't know before. Allah's kindness to you is great.
114. There's nothing good in most of their secret talks, except when someone tells others to give charity, do good things, or help people make peace. Whoever does these things to make Allah happy, We will give them a wonderful reward.
115. Whoever goes against the Messenger after clearly knowing the right way, and follows a different path than the believers, We will let them go the way they chose, and We will put them into Hellfire. What a terrible place to end up!
116. Allah doesn't forgive anyone who worships others besides Him, but He forgives anything else for whoever He wants. Whoever worships others besides Allah has gone far, far away from the right path.
117. They only pray to idols instead of Allah, and they're really praying to a stubborn devil.
118. Allah has cursed him. The devil said, "I will surely take some of Your servants for myself."
119. "I will lead them away from the right path, and I will fill them with false hopes. I will tell them to cut the ears of animals, and I will tell them to change the way Allah created things." Whoever chooses the devil as a friend instead of Allah has clearly lost everything.
120. The devil makes promises to them and fills them with false hopes, but the devil's promises are nothing but lies.
121. Those people will end up in Hellfire, and they won't find any way to escape from it.
122. But those who believe and do good things, We will bring them into beautiful gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, and they will stay there forever. This is Allah's true promise. Who could ever speak more truthfully than Allah?
123. It's not about what you wish for, or what the People of the Book wish for. Whoever does something wrong will be punished for it, and they won't find any friend or helper besides Allah.
124. But whoever does good things, whether they're a male or a female, and believes in Allah, they will enter Paradise, and they won't be treated unfairly, not even a tiny bit.
125. Who could be better in religion than someone who gives themselves completely to Allah, does good, and follows the way of Abraham, who worshiped only Allah? And Allah chose Abraham as a close friend.
126. Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah, and Allah surrounds and knows everything.
127. They ask you questions about women. Say, "Allah gives you answers about them, and the Book explains clearly about orphan girls. These are the girls you don't give what belongs to them, and you want to marry them yourselves. It also explains about children who are weak and helpless. You must treat orphans fairly." Whatever good you do, Allah always knows about it.
128. If a woman is worried that her husband doesn't care about her or is turning away from her, it's okay for them to make peace between themselves. Making peace is always better. People naturally find it hard to share and be generous. But if you do good and are careful to obey Allah, He knows everything you do.
129. You can never be completely fair between wives, even if you really want to. But don't completely ignore one of them, leaving her feeling alone and forgotten. If you make things right and are careful to obey Allah, He is forgiving and kind.
130. If a husband and wife separate, Allah will give each of them enough from His abundance. Allah is generous and wise.
131. Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah. We told the people who received the Book before you, and we tell you too: Be careful to obey Allah. But if you don't believe, remember that everything in the heavens and the earth still belongs to Allah. Allah doesn't need anything, and He deserves all praise.
132. Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah, and Allah is enough to take care of everything.
133. If He wants, He can take you away, people, and bring others instead. Allah has the power to do that.
134. Whoever wants rewards in this world should know that Allah has rewards in this world and in the Hereafter. Allah hears and sees everything.
135. Believers, always stand up for fairness, and speak the truth for Allah — even if it's against yourselves, your parents, or your relatives. Whether someone is rich or poor, Allah cares about both of them. So don't follow your wishes instead of being fair. If you twist the truth or turn away, remember that Allah knows everything you do.
136. Believers, believe in Allah, His Messenger, the Book He gave His Messenger, and the Books He gave before. Anyone who doesn't believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, and the Last Day has gone far astray.
137. Those who believe, then stop believing, then believe again, then stop believing again, and then become even more stubborn in disbelief — Allah won't forgive them or guide them to the right way.
138. Tell the hypocrites — those who pretend to believe but don't really believe — that they'll have a painful punishment.
139. They choose disbelievers as friends instead of believers. Do they think this will make them strong? All strength belongs to Allah alone.
140. Allah has told you in the Book: when you hear people disbelieving Allah's verses or making fun of them, don't sit with them until they talk about something else. If you stay with them, you'll become like them. Allah will gather all the hypocrites and disbelievers together in Hellfire.
141. These hypocrites wait to see what happens to you. If Allah gives you victory, they say, "Weren't we with you?" But if the disbelievers get something good, they say to them, "Didn't we help you and protect you from the believers?" Allah will judge between you all on the Day of Judgment. Allah will never let disbelievers win over believers.
142. The hypocrites try to trick Allah, but He is tricking them. When they stand up to pray, they stand lazily, just showing off to people. They hardly remember Allah at all.
143. They're stuck in between — not with these people, and not with those people. Anyone God leaves lost, you'll never find a way for them.
144. Believers, don't choose disbelievers as friends instead of believers. Do you want to give Allah a clear reason against you?
145. The hypocrites will be in the lowest part of the Fire, and you'll never find anyone to help them.
146. But those who turn back to Allah, fix their mistakes, hold tightly to Allah, and are sincere in their faith — these people will be with the believers. Allah will give the believers a wonderful reward.
147. Why would Allah punish you if you're thankful and believe? Allah is thankful, and He knows everything.
148. Allah doesn't like people saying bad things, except if someone was treated unfairly. Allah hears everything and knows everything.
149. If you show kindness, or keep it secret, or forgive someone who was mean to you, remember that Allah forgives and has the power to do anything.
150. Some people don't believe in Allah and His messengers. They want to separate Allah from His messengers. They say, "We believe in some messengers, but not in others," and they try to find a way in between.
151. Those people don't believe at all. We've prepared an embarrassing punishment for those who don't believe.
152. But those who believe in Allah and all His messengers, and don't separate any of them, Allah will give them their rewards. Allah always forgives and is very kind.
153. The People of the Book ask you to bring down a book from the sky. They asked Moses for something even bigger — they said, "Show us Allah clearly!" Then lightning struck them because they were unfair. Later, even after clear signs came to them, they worshiped a calf. But We forgave them, and We gave Moses clear proof.
154. We lifted the mountain above them when they made their promise. We said to them, "Enter the gate bowing down," and We told them, "Don't break the rule of the Sabbath." We made a strong promise with them.
155. But they broke their promise, didn't believe in Allah's signs, killed prophets unfairly, and said, "Our hearts are sealed." Actually, Allah sealed their hearts because they didn't believe, so only a few of them believe.
156. They didn't believe, and they said terrible lies about Mary.
157. They also said, "We killed Jesus, the Messiah, son of Mary, Allah's messenger." But they didn't kill him, and they didn't put him on a cross — it only seemed that way to them. Those who argue about this are confused. They don't really know — they're just guessing. They definitely didn't kill him.
158. Instead, Allah lifted Jesus up to Himself. Allah is mighty and wise.
159. Everyone from the People of the Book will believe in Jesus before he dies. On the Day of Judgment, Jesus will be a witness about them.
160. Because some Jewish people were unfair, We made some good foods forbidden for them — foods that used to be allowed. They also stopped many people from following Allah's way.
161. They took interest, even though they were told not to, and unfairly took other people's money. We've prepared a painful punishment for those who don't believe among them.
162. But those among them who have deep knowledge, and the believers, believe in what was given to you and what was given before you. They pray regularly, give charity, and believe in Allah and the Last Day. We'll give them a great reward.
163. We sent a message to you, just as We sent messages to Noah and the prophets after him. And We sent messages to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Tribes, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon. And We gave David the Psalms.
164. And there are messengers We already told you about, and messengers We haven't told you about. And Allah spoke to Moses directly.
165. These messengers brought good news and warnings, so people wouldn't have any excuse before Allah after the messengers came. And Allah is Mighty and Wise.
166. But Allah Himself is a witness to what He sent down to you. He sent it down with His knowledge. And the angels are witnesses too. And Allah is enough as a witness.
167. Those who disbelieve and stop others from following Allah's way have gone far, far away from the right path.
168. Those who disbelieve and do wrong — Allah won't forgive them or guide them to any path.
169. Except the path to Hell, where they'll stay forever. And that's easy for Allah.
170. O people, the Messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord. So believe — it's better for you. But if you disbelieve, remember that everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah. And Allah knows everything and is Wise.
171. People of the Book, don't go too far in your religion, and don't say anything about Allah except what's true. Jesus, the son of Mary, was only Allah's messenger, and His word that He gave to Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and don't say "Three." Stop — that's better for you. Allah is only One God. He's far above having a child. Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him. And Allah is enough to take care of everything.
172. Jesus would never feel too proud to be Allah's servant, and neither would the angels who are close to Allah. Whoever feels too proud to worship Allah and acts like they're better than others — Allah will gather them all together in front of Him.
173. Those who believe and do good things, Allah will give them their rewards fully, and even more from His kindness. But those who feel too proud and think they're better than others, He will punish them with a painful punishment. They won't find anyone besides Allah to protect or help them.
174. People, a clear proof has come to you from your Lord, and We've sent down to you a clear light.
175. Those who believe in Allah and hold tightly to Him, He will bring them into His kindness and blessings, and He will guide them to Himself on a straight path.
176. They ask you for an answer. Say, "Allah tells you what to do when someone dies and doesn't have any children: If a man dies and has no child but has a sister, she gets half of what he leaves behind. And he inherits from her if she has no child. If there are two sisters, they get two-thirds of what he leaves behind. And if there are brothers and sisters, the brother gets twice as much as the sister." Allah explains this to you so you don't make mistakes. And Allah knows everything.
