In the name of Allah, the Most Kind, the Most Caring.

1. Alif. Lam. Meem.

2. This is the Book — there's no doubt about it. It's a guide for those who are always trying to do good.

3. They're the ones who believe in things they can't see, pray regularly, and give to others from what We gave them.

4. They believe in what was given to you, and what was given before you, and they're sure about the Hereafter.

5. These people follow guidance from their Lord, and they're the ones who will succeed.

6. Those who don't believe — it doesn't matter if you warn them or not — they won't believe.

7. Allah has sealed their hearts and ears, and there's a cover over their eyes. They'll have a great punishment.

8. Some people say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," but they don't really believe.

9. They try to trick Allah and the believers, but they're only tricking themselves, and they don't even realize it.

10. There's a sickness in their hearts, so Allah makes their sickness worse. They'll have a painful punishment, because they kept lying.

11. When someone tells them, "Don't make trouble on earth," they say, "We're only making things better."

12. But they're the ones making trouble, and they don't even realize it.

13. When someone tells them, "Believe like other people believe," they say, "Should we believe like those foolish people?" But they're the foolish ones, and they don't even know it.

14. When they meet believers, they say, "We believe." But when they're alone with their evil friends, they say, "We're really with you — we were only joking."

15. Allah is the One Who will turn their joke back on them, and He lets them wander blindly in their mistakes.

16. They're the ones who traded guidance for being lost. Their trade didn't help them, and they didn't find the right way.

17. They're like someone who lit a fire. When it lit up everything around, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness, unable to see.

18. They're deaf, unable to speak, and blind, so they can't find their way back.

19. Or they're like people caught in a big storm, full of darkness, thunder, and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears, because they're scared of dying from the thunder. But Allah surrounds those who don't believe.

20. The lightning almost takes away their sight. Every time it lights up, they walk forward, but when it gets dark again, they stop. If Allah wanted, He could completely take away their hearing and sight. Allah has power over everything.

21. People, worship your Lord, Who created you and those before you, so you can always try to do good.

22. He made the earth like a soft carpet for you, and the sky like a strong roof above. He sent down rain from the sky, and with it He brought out fruits for you to eat. So don't make others equal to Allah, while you know.

23. If you're not sure about what We gave Our servant, then try to make a chapter like it. Call anyone you want besides Allah to help you, if you're telling the truth.

24. But if you can't do it — and you'll never be able to — then watch out for the Fire, whose fuel is people and stones. It's prepared for those who don't believe.

25. Give good news to those who believe and do good things. They'll have gardens with rivers flowing beneath them. Every time they're given fruit to eat, they'll say, "This is like the fruit we had before," because it looks similar. They'll have pure friends there, and they'll stay there forever.

26. Allah isn't shy to give examples — even of something as small as a mosquito or smaller. Those who believe know it's the truth from their Lord. But those who don't believe say, "What does Allah mean by this example?" He misguides many with it, and He guides many with it. But He only misguides those who disobey Him.

27. They're the ones who break their promise to Allah after making it. They cut off what Allah said should stay connected, and they make trouble on earth. They're the ones who lose.

28. How can you not believe in Allah? You had no life, then He gave you life. Then He'll make you die, and then He'll bring you back to life again. After that, you'll return to Him.

29. He's the One Who created everything on earth for you. Then He turned to the sky and shaped it into seven skies. And He knows everything.

30. Remember when your Lord said to the angels, "I'm going to put someone in charge on the earth." They asked, "Will You put there someone who will make trouble and hurt others, while we always praise You and thank You?" Allah said, "I know things you don't know."

31. Then Allah taught Adam the names of everything. After that, He showed them to the angels and said, "Tell Me the names of these things, if you're telling the truth."

32. The angels said, "Glory to You! We only know what You've taught us. You know everything, and You're very wise."

33. Allah said, "Adam, tell them the names." When Adam told them all the names, Allah said, "Didn't I tell you that I know all the hidden things in the heavens and the earth? And I know what you show and what you hide."

34. Remember when We said to the angels, "Bow down to Adam." They all bowed down, except Iblis. He refused, acted proudly, and became one of those who didn't believe.

35. Then We said, "Adam, you and your wife can live happily in Paradise. Eat freely whatever you like, but don't go near this tree, or you'll be doing wrong."

36. But Satan tricked them and made them slip. He caused them to leave the place they were in. Then We said, "Go down to the earth. Some of you will be enemies to others. You'll stay there and enjoy things for a while."

37. Then Adam learned some words from his Lord, and Allah forgave him. Allah always forgives and is very kind.

38. We said, "Go down from here, all of you. When guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance won't be afraid or sad."

39. But those who don't believe and say Our verses aren't true — they will be the people of the Fire. They'll stay there forever.

40. Children of Israel, remember My blessing that I gave you. Keep your promise to Me, and I'll keep My promise to you. And respect Me.

41. Believe in what I sent down, which agrees with what you already have. Don't be the first ones to disbelieve in it. Don't trade My verses for something small. And be careful to obey Me.

42. Don't mix truth with falsehood, and don't hide the truth when you know it.

43. Pray properly, give charity, and bow down with those who bow down.

44. Do you tell people to do good, but forget to do it yourselves, even though you read the Book? Don't you understand?

45. Ask for help through patience and prayer. It's difficult, except for those who are humble.

46. Those who know they'll meet their Lord, and that they'll return to Him.

47. Children of Israel, remember My blessing that I gave you, and that I favored you above all other people.

48. Watch out for a Day when no one can help another person at all. No one can speak up for someone else, no payment will be accepted, and no one will be helped.

49. Remember when We saved you from Pharaoh's people. They treated you terribly — they killed your sons and let your daughters live. That was a big test from your Lord.

50. Remember when We split the sea for you. We saved you and drowned Pharaoh's people, while you watched.

51. Remember when We promised Moses forty nights. But after he left, you took the calf for worship, and you did wrong.

52. Even after that, We forgave you, so you might be thankful.

53. And remember when We gave Moses the Book and clear lessons, so you could find the right way.

54. And remember when Moses said to his people, "My people, you did something very wrong by worshiping the calf. Turn back to your Creator and kill yourselves. That's better for you with your Creator." Then He forgave you. He is the One Who always forgives and is very kind.

55. And remember when you said, "Moses, we won't believe you until we see Allah clearly." Then lightning struck you while you watched.

56. Then We brought you back to life after you had died, so you might be thankful.

57. And We shaded you with clouds, and sent down sweet food and tasty birds for you. Eat the good things We gave you. They didn't hurt Us, but they hurt themselves.

58. And remember when We said, "Enter this town and eat freely whatever you like. Enter the gate bowing down humbly and say, 'Forgive us.' Then We'll forgive your mistakes and give even more to those who do good."

59. But those who did wrong changed the words they were told to say. So We sent down a punishment from the sky, because they disobeyed.

60. And remember when Moses asked for water for his people. We said, "Hit the rock with your stick." Then twelve springs of water flowed out. Each group knew its own drinking place. Eat and drink from what Allah gives you, and don't make trouble on earth.

61. And remember when you said, "Moses, we can't eat the same food all the time. Ask your Lord to give us vegetables, cucumbers, garlic, lentils, and onions from the earth." Moses said, "Do you want to trade something better for something worse? Go down to any town, and you'll find what you're asking for." Then shame and sadness fell on them, and they earned Allah's anger. That happened because they didn't believe in Allah's signs and wrongly killed the prophets. They disobeyed and went too far.

62. Those who believe, and those who are Jews, Christians, or Sabeans — anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day and does good things — will have their reward with their Lord. They won't be afraid or sad.

63. And remember when We made a promise with you and lifted the mountain above you. We said, "Hold tightly to what We gave you, and remember what's in it, so you'll be careful to obey Allah."

64. But after that, you turned away. If it wasn't for Allah's kindness and mercy, you would have been among the losers.

65. You already know about those who broke the rules on the Sabbath. We said to them, "Become monkeys, pushed away!"

66. We made this a lesson for the people around them, and for those who came later, and a reminder for those careful to obey Allah.

67. And remember when Moses said to his people, "Allah commands you to sacrifice a cow." They said, "Are you making fun of us?" Moses replied, "I ask Allah to protect me from being ignorant."

68. They said, "Ask your Lord to explain clearly what kind of cow it is." Moses answered, "He says it's a cow — not old, not young, but in between. Now do what you're told."

69. They said, "Ask your Lord to tell us clearly what color it is." Moses answered, "He says it's a bright yellow cow, with a color that makes people happy when they look at it."

70. They said, "Ask your Lord to explain exactly what kind of cow it is, because all cows look alike to us. If Allah wills, we'll find the right one."

71. Moses answered, "He says it's a cow that's never been used to plow the land or water the fields. It's healthy, with no marks or spots." They said, "Now you've brought the truth!" So they sacrificed it, but they almost didn't do it.

72. And remember when you killed someone, and then argued about who did it. But Allah was going to show clearly what you were hiding.

73. So We said, "Touch the dead person with a piece of the cow." That's how Allah brings the dead back to life, and He shows you His signs, so you can understand.

74. But after all this, your hearts became hard. They became as hard as rocks — or even harder. Some rocks have rivers flowing out of them. Some rocks split open, and water comes out. And some rocks fall down because they respect Allah. Allah isn't unaware of what you do.

75. Do you hope they'll believe you? Some of them heard Allah's words, understood them, and then changed them on purpose, even though they knew it was wrong.

76. When they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe too." But when they're alone with each other, they say, "Why do you tell them what Allah showed you? They'll use it to argue against you in front of your Lord. Don't you understand?"

77. Don't they know that Allah knows everything they hide and everything they show?

78. Some of them don't know the Book at all. They only have wishes, and they just guess.

79. How terrible for those who write something with their own hands and then say, "This is from Allah," just to get a little money. How terrible for them because of what their hands wrote, and how terrible for them because of what they earn.

80. They say, "The Fire will only touch us for a few days." Say, "Did Allah promise you that? Allah never breaks His promises. Or are you saying things about Allah that you don't know?"

81. Yes, whoever does bad things and gets surrounded by their mistakes — those are the people of the Fire. They'll stay there forever.

82. But those who believe and do good things — those are the people of Paradise. They'll stay there forever.

83. Remember when We made a promise with the Children of Israel: "Worship only Allah, be kind to your parents, relatives, orphans, and poor people. Speak nicely to everyone, pray regularly, and give charity." But most of you turned away and didn't listen.

84. Remember when We made a promise with you: "Don't hurt each other or make each other leave your homes." You agreed and promised to follow this.

85. But now you're hurting each other and forcing some of your own people out of their homes. You help each other do wrong and hurtful things. Then, if they come to you as prisoners, you pay money to free them, even though it was wrong to force them out in the first place. Do you believe in some parts of the Book and ignore other parts? Anyone who does this will be ashamed in this life, and on the Day of Judgment they'll get the worst punishment. Allah sees everything you do.

86. Those are the people who chose this life instead of the Hereafter. Their punishment won't get easier, and no one will help them.

87. We gave Moses the Book and sent messengers after him. We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear miracles and supported him with the Holy Spirit. But every time a messenger came to you with something you didn't like, you acted proudly. You called some messengers liars, and you even killed others.

88. They say, "Our hearts are covered." But Allah has cursed them because they don't believe, so very few of them believe.

89. When a Book from Allah came to them, agreeing with what they already had — and before that, they used to pray for victory against those who didn't believe — but when what they knew came to them, they didn't believe in it. So Allah's curse is on those who don't believe.

90. How terrible is what they chose for themselves! They refused to believe in what Allah sent down, because they were jealous that Allah chose to send His kindness to other people. So they earned anger upon anger. And those who don't believe will have a painful punishment.

91. When they're told, "Believe in what Allah has sent down," they say, "We only believe in what was given to us," and they refuse to believe in anything else — even though it's the truth, agreeing with what they already have. Say, "Then why did you kill Allah's prophets before, if you really believed?"

92. Moses came to you with clear signs, but after he left, you chose to worship the calf — you did something very wrong.

93. Remember when We made a promise with you and raised the mountain above you, saying, "Hold tightly to what We gave you, and listen carefully." They said, "We hear, but we won't obey." Because they didn't believe, their hearts were filled with love for the calf. Say, "How terrible is what your belief tells you to do, if you really believe!"

94. Say, "If the home in the Hereafter with Allah is only for you and no one else, then wish for death, if you're telling the truth."

95. But they'll never wish for death, because of the bad things they did. And Allah knows very well who does wrong.

96. You'll find them wanting to live more than anyone else — even more than those who worship others besides Allah. Each one of them wishes he could live a thousand years. But even living that long won't save him from punishment. And Allah sees everything they do.

97. Say, "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel should know that he brought this Quran down to your heart, by Allah's permission. It agrees with what came before it, and it's guidance and good news for those who believe."

98. Whoever is an enemy to Allah, His angels, His messengers, Gabriel, and Michael — then Allah is an enemy to those who don't believe.

99. We've sent down clear verses to you, and no one refuses to believe in them except those who disobey Allah.

100. Every time they made a promise, some of them broke it. Most of them don't believe.

101. When a messenger from Allah came to them, agreeing with the Book they already had, some of the people who received the Book threw Allah's Book behind their backs, as if they didn't know anything.

102. They followed what the devils taught during Solomon's kingdom. Solomon didn't disbelieve, but the devils did. They taught people magic and what was sent to the two angels, Harut and Marut, in Babylon. But those two angels never taught anyone without first saying, "We are only a test, so don't disbelieve." People learned from them how to separate a husband from his wife. But they couldn't harm anyone with it unless Allah allowed it. They learned things that hurt them and didn't help them. They knew that whoever chose magic would have no share of good in the Hereafter. What a terrible thing they traded themselves for, if only they knew!

103. If they had believed and were careful to obey Allah, the reward from Allah would have been much better, if only they knew!

104. You who believe, don't say "Ra'ina." Instead, say "Unzurna," and listen carefully. Those who disbelieve will have a painful punishment.

105. Those who disbelieve from the People of the Book and those who worship others besides Allah don't want any good to come down to you from your Lord. But Allah chooses whoever He wants for His kindness. Allah is very generous.

106. Whenever We replace a verse or cause it to be forgotten, We bring another verse that's better or just as good. Don't you know that Allah has power over everything?

107. Don't you know that Allah rules the heavens and the earth? You have no protector or helper besides Allah.

108. Do you want to question your messenger, just like Moses was questioned before? Whoever trades belief for disbelief has lost the right path.

109. Many of the People of the Book wish they could turn you back into disbelievers after you've believed, because they're jealous, even after the truth became clear to them. So forgive them and let it go, until Allah brings His command. Allah has power over everything.

110. Keep up the prayer and give charity. Whatever good you do for yourselves, you'll find it with Allah. Allah sees everything you do.

111. They say, "No one will enter Paradise unless they're Jews or Christians." Those are just their wishes. Say, "Show your proof, if you're telling the truth."

112. Yes, whoever gives themselves completely to Allah and does good things will have their reward with their Lord. They won't be afraid, and they won't be sad.

113. The Jews say, "The Christians aren't following anything true," and the Christians say, "The Jews aren't following anything true," even though they both read the Book. People who don't know say the same things. But Allah will judge between them on the Day of Judgment about what they argued over.

114. Who could be more unfair than someone who stops people from remembering Allah's name in His places of worship and tries to ruin them? Those people shouldn't enter these places except with fear. They'll be ashamed in this world, and they'll have a big punishment in the Hereafter.

115. The east and the west belong to Allah. So wherever you turn, Allah is there. Allah is everywhere and knows everything.

116. They say, "Allah has a child." Glory to Him! No, everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him. Everyone obeys Him.

117. He created the heavens and the earth in an amazing way. When He decides something, He just says, "Be," and it happens.

118. People who don't know say, "Why doesn't Allah speak to us, or show us a miracle?" People before them said the same thing. Their hearts are alike. We've already made the signs clear for people who are sure.

119. We sent you with the truth, to give good news and to warn. You won't be asked about the people of Hellfire.

120. The Jews and Christians won't be happy with you until you follow their way. Say, "Allah's guidance is the true guidance." If you follow their wishes after the knowledge you've received, you'll have no protector or helper from Allah.

121. Those who received the Book and read it the way it should be read — they believe in it. But whoever doesn't believe in it — they're the ones who lose.

122. Children of Israel, remember My blessings that I gave you, and that I chose you above all other people.

123. And watch out for a Day when no one can help anyone else, no payment will be accepted, no one can speak up for another, and no one will be helped.

124. Remember when Allah tested Abraham with some commands, and he completed them all. Allah said, "I will make you a leader for all people." Abraham asked, "And what about my children?" Allah answered, "My promise doesn't include those who do wrong."

125. Remember when We made the Kaaba a special place for people to visit and a safe place. And We said, "Make the place where Abraham stood a place for prayer." And We told Abraham and Ishmael, "Keep My House clean for those who walk around it, those who stay there, and those who bow and pray."

126. Remember when Abraham prayed, "My Lord, make this city safe, and give plenty of fruits to the people here who believe in Allah and the Last Day." Allah said, "Even those who don't believe, I'll let them enjoy things for a little while. Then I'll lead them to the punishment of the Fire. What a terrible place to end up!"

127. Remember when Abraham and Ishmael were building the foundations of the House. They prayed, "Our Lord, accept this from us. You hear everything and know everything."

128. "Our Lord, make us obedient to You, and from our children, make a group of people obedient to You. Show us how to worship You, and forgive us. You always forgive and are very kind."

129. "Our Lord, send them a messenger from among themselves, who will read Your verses to them, teach them the Book and wisdom, and help them become good and pure. You are the Mighty and Wise."

130. Who would turn away from Abraham's way, except someone who fools himself? We chose Abraham in this world, and in the Hereafter, he'll be among the good people.

131. When his Lord said to him, "Obey Me," Abraham answered, "I obey the Lord of everyone and everything."

132. Abraham told his children to follow this way, and so did Jacob. They said, "My children, Allah has chosen this religion for you, so don't die unless you're obedient to Him."

133. Were you there when Jacob was about to die? He asked his children, "Who will you worship after I'm gone?" They answered, "We'll worship your God, the God of your fathers — Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac — the One God. And we obey only Him."

134. Those people have already passed away. They'll get what they earned, and you'll get what you earn. You won't be asked about what they used to do.

135. They say, "Become Jews or Christians, and you'll be guided." Say, "No, we follow Abraham's way — he worshiped only Allah, and he never worshiped others besides Him."

136. Say, "We believe in Allah, and in what was given to us, and what was given to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes. We believe in what Moses and Jesus received, and what all the prophets received from their Lord. We don't treat any of them differently, and we submit to Him."

137. If they believe the same way you believe, then they're guided. But if they turn away, they're just arguing. Allah will protect you from them. He hears everything and knows everything.

138. Allah's way is the best way. And who could have a better way than Allah? We worship only Him.

139. Say, "Are you arguing with us about Allah? He's our Lord and your Lord. We have our actions, and you have your actions. And we are sincere to Him."

140. Or do you say that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes were Jews or Christians? Say, "Do you know better, or does Allah?" Who could be more unfair than someone who hides the truth they learned from Allah? Allah sees everything you do.

141. Those people lived long ago. They'll get what they earned, and you'll get what you earn. You won't be asked about what they did.

142. Some foolish people will say, "Why did they turn away from the direction they used to face in prayer?" Say, "The east and the west belong to Allah. He guides whoever He wants to the straight path."

143. And that's how We made you a balanced community, so you can be witnesses for all people, and the Messenger can be a witness for you. We changed the direction you used to face in prayer, to clearly see who follows the Messenger and who turns away. It was hard, except for those guided by Allah. Allah would never let your faith go to waste. Allah is gentle and kind to all people.

144. We see you looking up at the sky, waiting. So now, We'll turn you toward a prayer direction you'll be happy with. Turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. And wherever you are, turn your faces toward it. Those who received the Book know this is the truth from their Lord. Allah knows everything they do.

145. Even if you brought every proof to those who received the Book, they wouldn't follow your prayer direction. And you won't follow their prayer direction. They don't even follow each other's prayer directions. If you followed their wishes after the knowledge you've received, you'd be doing wrong.

146. Those who received the Book know him as clearly as they know their own children. But some of them hide the truth, even though they know it.

147. The truth comes from your Lord, so don't ever be one of those who doubt.

148. Everyone has a direction they turn toward, so hurry to do good things. Wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together. Allah has power over everything.

149. Wherever you go, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. This is the truth from your Lord. Allah always knows what you do.

150. Wherever you go, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. And wherever you all are, turn your faces toward it, so people won't have any reason to argue against you — except those who do wrong. Don't be afraid of them, but respect Me, so I can complete My blessing on you, and so you can find the right way.

151. Just as We sent you a messenger from among yourselves, who recites Our verses to you, makes you pure, teaches you the Book and wisdom, and teaches you things you didn't know before.

152. So remember Me, and I will remember you. Be thankful to Me, and don't be ungrateful.

153. You who believe, ask for help through patience and prayer. Allah is with those who are patient.

154. Don't say about those who are killed in Allah's way, "They're dead." No, they're alive, but you don't realize it.

155. We will test you with a little fear, hunger, and loss of money, lives, and fruits. But give good news to those who are patient.

156. Those who, when something difficult happens to them, say, "We belong to Allah, and we will return to Him."

157. They will have blessings and kindness from their Lord, and they are the ones who follow the right way.

158. Safa and Marwa are special places chosen by Allah. So whoever visits Allah's House for Hajj or Umrah, there's nothing wrong if they walk between these two hills. And whoever does extra good things — Allah is thankful and knows everything.

159. Those who hide the clear proofs and guidance We sent down, after We made it clear for people in the Book — Allah curses them, and everyone who curses will curse them too.

160. But those who repent, fix their mistakes, and tell the truth — I will forgive them. I am the One Who always forgives and is very kind.

161. Those who disbelieve and die without believing — Allah, the angels, and all people will curse them.

162. They will stay in it forever. Their punishment won't get easier, and they won't get another chance.

163. Your God is one God. There is no god except Him. He is the Most Merciful, the Most Kind.

164. In the creation of the skies and the earth, the changing of night and day, the ships sailing on the sea carrying useful things for people, the rain Allah sends down from the sky to bring the earth back to life after it was dry, the animals He spreads all over the earth, the winds blowing in different directions, and the clouds floating between the sky and the earth — in all these things are clear signs for people who think carefully.

165. Some people treat others as equals to Allah, loving them as much as they should love Allah. But those who believe love Allah even more. If only those who do wrong could see clearly — when they see the punishment — that all power belongs to Allah, and that Allah's punishment is very strong.

166. When the leaders they followed leave them alone, and they all see the punishment, all their friendships will break apart.

167. Those who followed will say, "If only we had another chance, we would leave them just like they left us." This is how Allah shows them their actions, and they will feel very sorry. They will never get out of the Fire.

168. O people, eat from the earth food that is allowed and good, and don't follow the footsteps of Satan. He is clearly your enemy.

169. He only tells you to do bad things, to do wrong, and to say things about Allah that you don't know.

170. When someone says to them, "Follow what Allah has given," they say, "No, we'll follow what we found our parents doing." But what if their parents didn't understand anything and weren't guided?

171. Those who don't believe are like sheep hearing a shepherd's call — they hear only sounds and shouts, but don't understand. They're deaf, dumb, and blind, so they don't think clearly.

172. Believers, eat the good and healthy things We've given you, and thank Allah if you worship Him.

173. He has forbidden you only dead animals, blood, pork, and animals offered to anyone other than Allah. But if someone is forced to eat these things, without wanting to disobey or going too far, there's no sin on them. Allah is forgiving and kind.

174. Those who hide what Allah has sent down in the Book, and trade it for a small price, they're only filling their stomachs with fire. Allah won't speak to them on the Day of Judgment, nor will He make them pure, and they'll have a painful punishment.

175. They're the ones who traded guidance for being lost, and forgiveness for punishment. How patient they are with the Fire!

176. That's because Allah sent down the Book with truth. Those who argue about the Book are far away from the truth.

177. Goodness isn't turning your faces toward the east or west. Goodness is believing in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets. It's giving your money, even though you love it, to relatives, orphans, poor people, travelers in need, those who ask for help, and to free people. It's praying regularly, giving charity, keeping promises, and being patient in hard times, sickness, and during trouble. These are the ones who are truthful, and they're careful to obey Allah.

178. Believers, fair punishment is required when someone is killed: a free person for a free person, a slave for a slave, and a woman for a woman. But if the victim's family forgives the guilty person, they should ask for payment in a kind way, and the person who pays should do it kindly. This is a kindness and mercy from your Lord. But whoever does wrong after this will have a painful punishment.

179. Fair punishment saves lives, people of understanding, so you can be careful to obey Allah.

180. When death comes near one of you, if they leave behind wealth, they must make a fair will for their parents and close relatives. This is a duty for those careful to obey Allah.

181. If anyone changes the will after hearing it, the sin is only on those who change it. Allah hears and knows everything.

182. But if someone fears the person making the will was unfair or did something wrong, and fixes things between everyone, there's no sin on them. Allah is forgiving and kind.

183. Believers, fasting is required for you, just as it was required for people before you, so you can become careful to obey Allah.

184. It's only for a certain number of days. But if any of you is sick or traveling, you can fast the same number of days later. And for those who find fasting very hard, they can feed a poor person instead. But whoever does extra good, that's even better for them. And fasting is better for you, if you only knew.

185. The month of Ramadan is when the Quran was given, as guidance for people, with clear lessons showing the right way and helping you tell right from wrong. So whoever sees this month should fast during it. But if anyone is sick or traveling, they can fast the same number of days later. Allah wants things to be easy for you, not hard. He wants you to complete the days of fasting, and to praise Allah for guiding you, and so you can be thankful.

186. And when My servants ask you about Me, I am near. I answer the prayer of anyone who prays to Me. So let them answer My call and believe in Me, so they can follow the right way.

187. During the nights of fasting, it's allowed for you to be close to your wives. They are like clothes for you, and you are like clothes for them. Allah knew you were secretly doing things you shouldn't, but He forgave you and was kind to you. So now you can be close to them, and seek what Allah has allowed for you. And eat and drink until you can see the light of dawn clearly from the darkness of night. Then complete your fasting until nighttime. But don't be close to your wives while you're staying in the mosques. These are Allah's rules, so don't go near breaking them. This is how Allah makes His verses clear to people, so they can be careful to obey Him.

188. Don't unfairly take each other's money, and don't use it to bribe judges, so you can wrongly take away some people's money, even though you know it's wrong.

189. They ask you about the new moons. Say, "They're signs to help people know the right times, and when to go for Hajj." Being good doesn't mean entering houses from the back. Being good means being careful to obey Allah. So enter houses through their proper doors, and respect Allah, so you can succeed.

190. Fight in Allah's way against those who fight you, but don't go too far. Allah doesn't love those who go too far.

191. Fight them wherever you find them, and make them leave from where they made you leave. Causing trouble is worse than killing. But don't fight them near the Sacred Mosque, unless they fight you there first. If they fight you there, then fight them back. That's how those who disbelieve are punished.

192. But if they stop fighting, then remember, Allah is forgiving and kind.

193. Keep fighting them until there's no more trouble, and people worship only Allah. But if they stop, then don't fight anyone except those who do wrong.

194. The sacred month is respected for the sacred month, and all sacred things must be respected equally. If someone attacks you, you can respond in the same way they attacked you. But always respect Allah, and remember that Allah is with those who are careful to obey Him.

195. Spend your money in Allah's way, and don't make choices that will get you into trouble. Always do good, because Allah loves those who do good.

196. Complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah. If you're stopped from finishing, then offer whatever animal you can easily find. Don't shave your heads until the animal reaches the place of sacrifice. If any of you is sick or has a problem with their head, then they can make up for it by fasting, giving charity, or offering a sacrifice. When you're safe again, whoever enjoys Umrah before Hajj should offer whatever animal they can easily find. If you can't find one, then fast three days during Hajj and seven days when you return home — that makes ten days altogether. This rule is for those whose families don't live near the Sacred Mosque. Be careful to obey Allah, and remember that Allah's punishment is severe.

197. Hajj happens during certain known months. Whoever decides to perform Hajj during these months shouldn't say bad words, do wrong things, or argue during Hajj. Whatever good you do, Allah knows it. Take supplies with you, but the best supply is being careful to obey Allah. So respect Me, people who understand.

198. There's nothing wrong if you look for Allah's blessings during Hajj. When you leave Arafat, remember Allah at the special holy place. Remember Him, because He guided you, even though before this you were lost.

199. Then leave from where all the people leave, and ask Allah to forgive you. Allah is forgiving and kind.

200. When you've finished your special acts of worship, remember Allah as much as you remember your parents — or even more. Some people say, "Our Lord, give us good things in this world," but they'll have nothing in the Hereafter.

201. And some people say, "Our Lord, give us good things in this world, and good things in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."

202. Those people will get a share of what they've earned. Allah is quick in taking account.

203. Remember Allah during these few special days. If someone leaves after two days, there's no blame on them. And if someone stays longer, there's no blame on them either — as long as they're careful to obey Allah. Respect Allah, and remember that you'll all be gathered back to Him.

204. Some people speak in a way that impresses you in this life. They even call Allah to witness what's in their hearts — but they're actually the worst at arguing.

205. When they turn away, they hurry around causing trouble on earth, destroying crops and offspring. Allah doesn't like corruption.

206. When someone tells them, "Respect Allah," their pride makes them do even more wrong. Hellfire is enough for them — what a terrible place to stay!

207. But some people give up their own lives to please Allah. And Allah is very kind to His servants.

208. You who believe, enter completely into peace, and don't follow the footsteps of Satan. He is clearly your enemy.

209. If you slip after clear proofs have come to you, then remember that Allah is mighty and wise.

210. Are they waiting for Allah and the angels to come to them in clouds? Then everything will be decided, and all things return to Allah.

211. Ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We gave them. Whoever changes Allah's blessing after it comes to them, Allah punishes very strongly.

212. For those who disbelieve, this life seems beautiful, and they laugh at those who believe. But on the Day of Judgment, those who are careful to obey Allah will be above them. Allah gives to anyone He wants without limit.

213. All people were once one community. Then Allah sent prophets with good news and warnings. He sent down the Book with truth, to judge between people about things they disagreed on. But only the people who received the Book argued about it, after clear proofs came to them. They did this because they wanted to be unfair to each other. But Allah guided the believers to the truth they disagreed about, by His permission. Allah guides anyone He wants to a straight path.

214. Do you think you'll enter Paradise without facing what people before you faced? Hard times and troubles touched them, and they were shaken so much that even the messenger and those who believed with him said, "When will Allah's help come?" Truly, Allah's help is near.

215. They ask you what they should spend in charity. Say, "Whatever good you spend, give it to your parents, your relatives, orphans, poor people, and travelers who need help. Whatever good you do, Allah knows about it."

216. Fighting has been made a duty for you, even though you dislike it. Sometimes you dislike something, but it's good for you. And sometimes you like something, but it's bad for you. Allah knows, and you do not know.

217. They ask you about fighting in the special holy month. Say, "Fighting in it is a big sin. But stopping people from following Allah's way, not believing in Him, preventing people from going to the Sacred Mosque, and forcing its people out of it — these are even bigger sins to Allah. And causing trouble is worse than fighting." They'll keep fighting you until they turn you away from your religion, if they can. Whoever turns away from their religion and dies without believing, all their good deeds will be lost in this world and in the Hereafter. They'll be people of the Fire, staying there forever.

218. Those who believe, who leave their homes for Allah's sake, and who work hard in Allah's way — they hope for Allah's kindness. And Allah is Forgiving and Kind.

219. They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, "In both of them is a big sin and some benefits for people. But their sin is bigger than their benefit." They ask you what they should give in charity. Say, "Give what is beyond your needs." This is how Allah makes His verses clear to you, so you can think carefully.

220. About this world and the Hereafter. They ask you about orphans. Say, "Doing what's best for them is good. If you mix with them, they're your brothers and sisters." Allah knows who causes trouble and who does good. If Allah wanted, He could make things difficult for you. Allah is mighty and wise.

221. Don't marry people who worship idols until they believe in Allah. A believing servant is better than someone who worships idols, even if you like them. And don't let idol-worshipers marry believers until they believe in Allah. A believing servant is better than an idol-worshiper, even if you like them. Those people invite you to the Fire, but Allah invites you to Paradise and forgiveness by His permission. He makes His verses clear to people, so they can remember.

222. They ask you about women's monthly bleeding. Say, "It's something uncomfortable, so stay away from women during that time, and don't go near them until they're clean again. When they're clean, you can go to them in the way Allah has allowed." Allah loves those who repent, and those who keep themselves clean.

223. Your wives are like fields for you, so come to your fields however you wish, and do good things for yourselves. Be careful to obey Allah, and remember that you'll meet Him one day. Give good news to those who believe.

224. Don't use Allah's name in your promises as an excuse to stop doing good, being respectful to Allah, or making peace between people. Allah hears everything and knows everything.

225. Allah won't blame you for promises you didn't really mean, but He will hold you responsible for what your hearts truly meant. Allah is forgiving and patient.

226. Those who swear not to approach their wives must wait four months. If they change their minds and go back, then Allah is forgiving and kind.

227. But if they decide to divorce, then remember that Allah hears everything and knows everything.

228. Divorced women must wait by themselves for three monthly cycles. If they believe in Allah and the Last Day, they must not hide what Allah has created inside their bodies. Their husbands have the right to take them back during this time if they truly want to make things better. Women have rights just like they have duties, but men have a little more responsibility. Allah is powerful and wise.

229. Divorce can happen two times. After that, either stay together kindly or separate nicely. It's not allowed for you to take back anything you've given your wives, unless both of you are afraid you can't follow Allah's rules. If you're worried they can't follow Allah's rules, then there's no blame if she gives something back to end the marriage. These are Allah's rules, so don't break them. Whoever breaks Allah's rules — those are the ones who do wrong.

230. If a man divorces his wife again, she is not allowed to marry him again until she marries a different husband. If the second husband divorces her, then it's okay for them to marry again if they believe they can follow Allah's rules. These are Allah's rules, and He explains them clearly to people who understand.

231. When you divorce women and their waiting time is finished, either keep them kindly or let them go kindly. Don't keep them just to hurt them or to do wrong. Whoever does that is hurting himself. Don't treat Allah's verses as a joke. Remember Allah's blessings on you and the Book and wisdom He sent down to teach you. Be careful to obey Allah, and remember that Allah knows everything.

232. When you divorce women and their waiting time is finished, don't stop them from marrying their former husbands again if they both agree kindly. This advice is for those of you who believe in Allah and the Last Day. This is better and cleaner for you. Allah knows, and you don't know.

233. Mothers can nurse their babies for two full years if they want to finish nursing. The father must give the mother food and clothes in a kind and fair way. No one should be asked to do more than they can handle. A mother shouldn't be hurt because of her child, and a father shouldn't be hurt because of his child. The same rule applies to the father's family. If the parents both agree and talk about stopping nursing early, that's okay. If you want someone else to nurse your child, that's okay too, as long as you pay them fairly. Be careful to obey Allah, and remember that Allah sees everything you do.

234. If any of you die and leave wives behind, the wives must wait four months and ten days before marrying again. When their waiting time is finished, there's no blame on you for what they decide to do kindly for themselves. Allah knows everything you do.

235. There's no blame on you if you hint about marrying these women or keep it quietly in your hearts. Allah knows you'll think about them. But don't secretly promise to marry them — just say what is right. Don't decide to marry until the waiting time is finished. Remember, Allah knows what's in your hearts, so watch out for Him. And remember, Allah is forgiving and patient.

236. There's nothing wrong if you divorce women before you've touched them or promised them a gift. But give them a nice gift — rich people according to what they can afford, and poor people according to what they can afford. This is the right thing for those who do good.

237. And if you divorce them before you've touched them, but after you've promised them a gift, then give them half of what you promised — unless they forgive it, or the one who made the marriage agreement forgives it. Forgiving is closer to being good. And don't forget to be kind to each other. Allah sees everything you do.

238. Take good care of your prayers, especially the middle prayer. And stand before Allah respectfully.

239. If you're afraid, pray while walking or riding. But when you're safe again, remember Allah, just as He taught you things you didn't know before.

240. Those of you who pass away and leave wives behind should leave a will for their wives, providing for them for a whole year without making them leave their homes. But if the wives choose to leave, there's nothing wrong with what they decide to do for themselves, as long as it's fair and good. Allah is mighty and wise.

241. Divorced women should be given a fair gift. This is the right thing for those who are careful to obey Allah.

242. This is how Allah clearly explains His verses to you, so you can understand.

243. Didn't you hear about the thousands of people who left their homes because they were afraid of dying? Allah said to them, "Die," and then He brought them back to life. Allah is very generous to people, but most people aren't thankful.

244. Fight in Allah's way, and remember that Allah hears and knows everything.

245. Who will lend Allah a good loan, so He will multiply it many times for them? Allah gives less or more, and you'll all return to Him.

246. Didn't you hear about the leaders of the Children of Israel after Moses? They said to their prophet, "Choose a king for us, so we can fight in Allah's way." He said, "What if fighting is commanded for you, but then you don't fight?" They said, "Why wouldn't we fight in Allah's way, when we've been forced out of our homes and separated from our children?" But when fighting was commanded for them, most of them turned away, except for a few. Allah knows the wrongdoers.

247. Their prophet said to them, "Allah has chosen Saul to be your king." They said, "How can he be our king? We deserve to be king more than him, and he doesn't even have much money." He said, "Allah chose him over you, and gave him more knowledge and strength. Allah gives His kingdom to whoever He wants. Allah is generous and knows everything."

248. Their prophet said to them, "The sign of his kingdom is that the special chest will come to you. It will bring peace from your Lord, and some things left behind by the families of Moses and Aaron. Angels will carry it. This is a clear sign for you, if you believe."

249. When Saul marched out with his soldiers, he said, "Allah will test you with a river. Whoever drinks from it isn't with me. But whoever doesn't drink from it is with me — except for those who take just one handful." But most of them drank from it, except a few. When Saul and the believers crossed the river, some said, "Today we can't beat Goliath and his soldiers." But those who knew they'd meet Allah said, "Many times, a small group has beaten a big group, with Allah's help. Allah is with those who are patient."

250. When they faced Goliath and his soldiers, they prayed, "Our Lord, pour patience over us, keep our feet steady, and help us win against the disbelieving people."

251. So they defeated them with Allah's help, and David killed Goliath. Allah gave David kingdom and wisdom, and taught him whatever He wanted. If Allah didn't let some people stop others, the earth would become ruined. But Allah is generous to everyone.

252. These are Allah's verses that We tell you truthfully. You are one of the messengers.

253. These messengers — We favored some over others. Some of them Allah spoke to, and some He raised higher. We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear miracles and supported him with the Holy Spirit. If Allah wanted, the people after them wouldn't have fought each other after clear miracles came to them. But they disagreed — some believed, and some disbelieved. If Allah wanted, they wouldn't have fought. But Allah does what He wants.

254. You who believe, give from what We have provided you, before a Day comes when there will be no buying, no friendship, and no one to speak for you. Those who disbelieve — they are the ones who do wrong.

255. Allah — there is no god except Him. He is the Ever-Living, Who takes care of everything. He never gets sleepy, and He never sleeps. Everything in the heavens and on the earth belongs to Him. No one can speak for someone else in front of Him, unless He allows it. He knows everything that happens now and everything that will happen later. No one can learn anything from His knowledge, except what He chooses to teach them. His throne covers the heavens and the earth, and taking care of them doesn't make Him tired. He is the Highest, the Greatest.

256. There is no forcing anyone to believe in religion. The right way is clear from the wrong way. Whoever refuses to follow false gods and believes in Allah has held onto the strongest handle, which will never break. Allah hears everything and knows everything.

257. Allah is the protector of those who believe. He brings them out of darkness into the light. But those who don't believe — their protectors are false gods, who take them out of the light into darkness. They will be the people of the Fire, and they will stay there forever.

258. Haven't you heard about the man who argued with Abraham about his Lord, because Allah had given him power? Abraham said, "My Lord gives life and causes death." The man said, "I can give life and cause death too." Abraham said, "Allah makes the sun rise from the east, so make it rise from the west." The man who didn't believe was shocked and couldn't answer. Allah doesn't guide people who do wrong.

259. Or think about the man who passed by a town that was completely destroyed. He said, "How can Allah bring this town back to life after it's dead?" So Allah made him die for a hundred years, then brought him back to life. Allah asked him, "How long have you been here?" He answered, "I've been here for a day, or maybe part of a day." Allah said, "No, you've been here for a hundred years. Now look at your food and drink — they haven't spoiled. And look at your donkey. We will make you a sign for people. Look at the bones — see how We put them back together, then cover them with flesh." When the man saw this clearly, he said, "Now I know that Allah can do anything."

260. And remember when Abraham said, "My Lord, show me how You bring the dead back to life." Allah asked, "Don't you believe?" Abraham said, "Yes, but I want my heart to feel sure." Allah said, "Take four birds, hold them close to you, then put a piece of them on each mountain. Then call them — they will come flying back to you. And know that Allah is mighty and wise."

261. Those who spend their money in Allah's way are like a seed that grows seven stalks, and each stalk has a hundred seeds. Allah gives even more to whoever He wants. Allah is generous and knows everything.

262. Those who spend their money in Allah's way, and don't remind others about it or hurt their feelings, will get their reward from their Lord. They won't feel afraid or sad.

263. Saying kind words and forgiving others is better than giving charity and then hurting someone's feelings. Allah doesn't need anything, and He is patient.

264. Believers, don't ruin your charity by reminding others about it or hurting their feelings. That's like someone who gives money just to show off to people, and doesn't believe in Allah or the Last Day. He's like a smooth rock covered with dirt — when heavy rain falls on it, the dirt washes away, leaving it bare. They can't get anything good from what they've done. Allah doesn't guide people who don't believe.

265. But those who spend their money to make Allah happy and to strengthen their hearts are like a garden on a hill. When heavy rain falls, it grows twice as much fruit. Even if there's no heavy rain, a gentle drizzle is enough. Allah sees everything you do.

266. Would any of you like to have a garden full of palm trees and grapevines, with rivers flowing underneath, and all kinds of fruit growing there — but then, when you become old and your children are still small and weak, a fiery storm comes and burns it all up? This is how Allah makes His lessons clear to you, so you can think carefully.

267. You who believe, give from the good things you've earned, and from the good things We've grown for you from the earth. Don't choose bad things to give away — things you wouldn't want yourself unless you closed your eyes to them. Remember, Allah is Rich and Deserves all praise.

268. Satan promises you'll become poor, and he tells you to do bad things. But Allah promises you forgiveness and many blessings from Him. Allah is Generous and Knows everything.

269. He gives wisdom to whoever He wants. Whoever gets wisdom has received something very good. Only people who think carefully will remember this.

270. Whatever you give to help others, or whatever promises you make, Allah knows about it. Those who do wrong won't have anyone to help them.

271. If you show your charity openly, that's good. But if you hide it and quietly give it to the poor, that's even better for you. Allah will erase some of your bad deeds. Allah knows everything you do.

272. It's not your job to guide people — Allah guides whoever He wants. Whatever good things you give, it's for your own good. And when you give, do it to please Allah. Whatever good you give will come back to you fully, and you won't be treated unfairly.

273. Give to the poor who are stuck because they're busy doing good things for Allah. They can't travel around to earn money. People who don't know them think they're rich, because they don't ask others for help. You can recognize them by their faces. They never beg people again and again. Whatever good you give, Allah knows about it.

274. Those who give their money at night and during the day, secretly and openly, will get their reward from their Lord. They won't feel afraid, and they won't feel sad.

275. Those who take interest will stand up like someone confused by the touch of Satan. That's because they say, "Buying and selling is just like taking interest." But Allah allowed buying and selling, and He forbade taking interest. Whoever hears this lesson from his Lord and stops, he can keep what he already took, and Allah will decide about him. But whoever goes back to taking interest — those are the people of the Fire. They will stay there forever.

276. Allah destroys interest, but He makes charity grow. Allah doesn't love anyone who is ungrateful and sinful.

277. Those who believe, do good deeds, pray regularly, and give charity — they will have their reward with their Lord. They won't feel afraid, and they won't be sad.

278. You who believe, be careful to obey Allah, and leave behind any interest that's still owed to you, if you really believe.

279. If you don't do this, then know you're choosing to fight against Allah and His Messenger. But if you stop and repent, you can have back the original money you lent. Don't be unfair to others, and others won't be unfair to you.

280. If someone owes you money but is having a hard time paying it back, give him more time until things get easier. But if you forgive the debt as charity, that's even better for you, if you only knew.

281. And be careful about a Day when you'll all return to Allah. Then every person will get exactly what they've earned, and no one will be treated unfairly.

282. Believers, when you borrow money from each other for a certain time, write it down. Let someone fair write it clearly for you. The writer shouldn't refuse to write, because Allah taught him how. The person who owes the money should say exactly what he owes, and he should respect Allah, his Lord, and not leave anything out. If the person who owes money is weak, or can't speak clearly, then his guardian should speak fairly for him. Ask two men you trust to be witnesses. If you can't find two men, then choose one man and two women you trust as witnesses, so if one woman forgets, the other can remind her. Witnesses shouldn't refuse when they're asked. Don't get tired of writing it down, whether it's a small or big amount, until the time it's due. This is fairer to Allah, better for witnessing, and helps you not to doubt. But if you're trading something right away, it's okay if you don't write it down. Still, have witnesses when you trade. Don't harm the writer or the witnesses. If you do, it's wrong. Respect Allah, and Allah will teach you. Allah knows everything.

283. If you're traveling and can't find someone to write it down, then leave something valuable as a promise. But if you trust each other, the person trusted should give back what he owes, and he should respect Allah, his Lord. Don't hide what you've seen. Whoever hides it, has done something wrong in his heart. Allah knows everything you do.

284. Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah. Whether you show what's in your heart or hide it, Allah will ask you about it. He forgives whoever He wants, and He punishes whoever He wants. Allah can do anything.

285. The Messenger believes in what Allah gave him, and so do the believers. They all believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers. They say, "We don't treat any of His messengers differently." And they say, "We hear and we obey. Forgive us, our Lord. To You we'll return."

286. Allah doesn't ask anyone to do more than they can handle. Each person gets rewarded for the good they do, and each person is responsible for the bad they do. Our Lord, please don't blame us if we forget or make mistakes. Our Lord, don't give us heavy duties like You gave to people before us. Our Lord, don't give us tasks too hard for us. Pardon us, forgive us, and be kind to us. You're our Protector, so help us against those who don't believe.
