1. A disavowal from Allah and His Messenger to those with whom you made a treaty among the idolaters.

2. So travel freely in the land for four months, and know that you cannot frustrate Allah, and that Allah will disgrace the disbelievers.

3. And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage, that Allah is free from obligation to the idolaters, and so is His Messenger. So if you repent, it is better for you; but if you turn away, then know that you cannot frustrate Allah. And give tidings to those who disbelieve of a painful punishment.

4. Except those idolaters with whom you made a treaty, and who have not failed you in anything nor supported anyone against you — so fulfill their treaty with them until their term. Indeed, Allah loves those mindful of Him.

5. Then, when the sacred months have passed, kill the idolaters wherever you find them. Seize them, besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, establish prayer, and give charity, then let them go their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

6. And if any of the idolaters seeks your protection, then grant him protection until he hears the words of Allah; then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.

7. How can there be a treaty for the idolaters with Allah and with His Messenger, except those with whom you made a treaty at the Sacred Mosque? So as long as they are upright toward you, be upright toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those mindful of Him.

8. How, when if they gain dominance over you, they would not respect toward you any ties of kinship or any covenant? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse, and most of them are defiantly disobedient.

9. They have exchanged the verses of Allah for a small price, and thus they hindered from His way. Evil indeed is what they used to do.

10. They do not respect toward a believer any ties of kinship or any covenant; and it is they who are the transgressors.

11. But if they repent, establish prayer, and give charity, then they are your brothers in religion. And We detail the verses for a people who know.

12. And if they break their oaths after their treaty and defame your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief — indeed, they have no oaths — that they might cease.

13. Will you not fight a people who broke their oaths, intended to expel the Messenger, and began against you the first time? Do you fear them? But Allah has more right that you should fear Him, if you are believers.

14. Fight them; Allah will punish them by your hands, disgrace them, grant you victory over them, heal the breasts of a believing people.

15. And remove the rage from their hearts. Allah accepts the repentance of whom He wills; and Allah is Knowing, Wise.

16. Or did you think that you would be left before Allah makes evident those among you who strive and take none besides Allah, His Messenger, and the believers as intimates? Allah is fully aware of what you do.

17. It is not for the idolaters to maintain the mosques of Allah while bearing witness against themselves to disbelief. Those — their deeds have become worthless, and in the Fire they will abide eternally.

18. Only those maintain the mosques of Allah who believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish prayer, give charity, and fear none but Allah; perhaps it is they who will be among the rightly guided.

19. Have you made the providing of water to pilgrims and the maintenance of the Sacred Mosque equal to one who believes in Allah and the Last Day and strives in the way of Allah? They are not equal in the sight of Allah; and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

20. Those who have believed, emigrated, and striven in the way of Allah with their wealth and their lives are greater in rank in the sight of Allah; and it is they who are the successful.

21. Their Lord gives them glad tidings of mercy from Him, approval, and gardens wherein they will have everlasting bliss.

22. Abiding therein forever. Truly, with Allah is a great reward.

23. O you who have believed, do not take your fathers and your brothers as allies if they prefer disbelief over belief. Whoever among you takes them as allies — it is they who are the wrongdoers.

24. Say, "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your spouses, your relatives, wealth you have acquired, commerce whose decline you fear, and dwellings you are pleased with are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and striving in His way, then wait until Allah brings about His command; and Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people."

25. Certainly, Allah has helped you in many places, and on the Day of Hunayn, when your great numbers pleased you, but they availed you nothing; and the earth, despite its vastness, became narrow for you; then you turned back, fleeing.

26. Then Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers, and sent down forces which you did not see, and punished those who disbelieved; and that is the recompense of the disbelievers.

27. Then, after that, Allah accepts the repentance of whom He wills; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

28. O you who believe, the idolaters are indeed impure; so let them not approach the Sacred Mosque after this year of theirs. And if you fear poverty, Allah will enrich you from His bounty, if He wills; truly, Allah is Knowing, Wise.

29. Fight those who do not believe in Allah nor in the Last Day, nor forbid what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, nor follow the religion of truth, from among those who were given the Scripture, until they give the tax by their own hands, in a state of subjection.

30. And the Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allah," and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allah." That is their saying with their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before. May Allah fight them; how deluded they are!

31. They have taken their rabbis and monks as lords besides Allah, and the Messiah, son of Mary; yet they were commanded only to worship one God. There is no god except Him; glory be to Him, above what they associate.

32. They desire to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah refuses except to perfect His light, even if the disbelievers dislike it.

33. He is the One Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over all religion, even if the idolaters dislike it.

34. O you who believe, indeed many of the rabbis and monks consume people's wealth unjustly and hinder from the way of Allah. And those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah — give them tidings of a painful punishment.

35. On the Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell, and their foreheads, their sides, and their backs will be branded with it: "This is what you hoarded for yourselves; so taste what you used to hoard."

36. Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the decree of Allah, from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the upright religion; so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight the idolaters collectively, as they fight you collectively; and know that Allah is with those mindful of Him.

37. Indeed, postponement is only an increase in disbelief, by which those who disbelieve are led astray. They make it lawful one year and unlawful another year, to conform to the number that Allah has made sacred, thus permitting what Allah has forbidden. The evil of their deeds has been made attractive to them; and Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.

38. O you who believe, what is the matter with you, that when it is said to you, "Go forth in the way of Allah," you cling heavily to the earth? Are you content with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? Yet the enjoyment of the life of this world, compared to the Hereafter, is but little.

39. If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment and replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him at all; and Allah is powerful over all things.

40. If you do not aid him, Allah has already aided him — when those who disbelieved drove him out, the second of two, when they were in the cave, when he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; surely Allah is with us." Then Allah sent down His tranquility upon him, supported him with soldiers you did not see, and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest; and the word of Allah is the highest; and Allah is Mighty, Wise.

41. Go forth, lightly or heavily, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the way of Allah; that is better for you, if you only knew.

42. Had it been a near gain and an easy journey, they would have followed you; but the distance seemed too far for them. They will swear by Allah, "If we had been able, we would have gone forth with you." They destroy themselves; and Allah knows that they are surely liars.

43. Allah has pardoned you; why did you grant them permission before it became clear to you who spoke the truth and you knew the liars?

44. Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day do not ask your permission to strive with their wealth and their lives; and Allah is Knowing of those mindful of Him.

45. Only those who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day ask your permission, and whose hearts are filled with doubt, so in their doubt they waver.

46. Had they desired to go forth, they would have prepared for it some preparation; but Allah disliked their going forth, so He made them lag behind; and it was said, "Sit with those who remain."

47. Had they gone forth among you, they would have increased you only in confusion, and would have hurried about among you, seeking to cause discord; and among you are those who listen to them; and Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers.

48. Certainly, they sought discord before, and turned matters upside down for you, until the truth came and the command of Allah became manifest, though they disliked it.

49. Among them is one who says, "Permit me, and do not put me to trial." Surely, into trial they have fallen; and indeed, Hell encompasses the disbelievers.

50. If good befalls you, it distresses them; but if calamity strikes you, they say, "We had already taken our precautions," and they turn away rejoicing.

51. Say, "Nothing will befall us except what Allah has decreed for us; He is our Protector; and upon Allah let the believers rely."

52. Say, "Are you waiting for anything to happen to us except one of the two best things? Yet we await for you that Allah will afflict you with punishment from Himself or by our hands. So wait; indeed, we are waiting with you."

53. Say, "Spend willingly or unwillingly; it will never be accepted from you. Indeed, you have been a defiantly disobedient people."

54. And nothing prevents their expenditures from being accepted from them, except that they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and they do not approach prayer except lazily, and they do not spend except unwillingly.

55. So let not their wealth nor their children impress you; Allah only intends to punish them through these in the life of this world, and that their souls should depart while they are disbelievers.

56. And they swear by Allah that they are indeed among you, but they are not among you; rather, they are a people who are afraid.

57. If they could find a refuge, or caves, or any place to enter, they would surely turn toward it, rushing headlong.

58. And among them are those who criticize you concerning the charities; if they are given from them, they are pleased; but if they are not given from them, immediately they become resentful.

59. If only they had been satisfied with what Allah and His Messenger gave them and said, "Allah is sufficient for us; Allah will give us from His bounty, and His Messenger; indeed, to Allah we are desirous."

60. Charities are only for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and for freeing captives, and for those in debt, and in the way of Allah, and for the traveler — as an obligation from Allah; and Allah is Knowing, Wise.

61. And among them are those who harm the Prophet and say, "He is an ear." Say, "An ear of goodness for you; he believes in Allah and believes the believers, and is a mercy to those among you who believe." And those who harm the Messenger of Allah — for them is a painful punishment.

62. They swear by Allah to you to please you; but Allah and His Messenger are worthier that they should please Him, if they are believers.

63. Do they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger — then indeed, for him is the Fire of Hell, abiding therein eternally? That is the great disgrace.

64. The hypocrites fear lest a chapter be revealed about them, informing them of what is in their hearts. Say, "Mock; surely Allah will bring forth what you fear."

65. And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing idly and playing." Say, "Is it Allah, His verses, and His Messenger that you were mocking?"

66. Make no excuses; you have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon a group among you, We will punish another group because they were criminals.

67. The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another; they enjoin what is wrong, forbid what is right, and withhold their hands. They forgot Allah, so He forgot them. Surely the hypocrites — they are the defiantly disobedient.

68. Allah has promised the hypocrite men, the hypocrite women, and the disbelievers the fire of Hell, abiding therein eternally. It is sufficient for them; and Allah has cursed them, and for them is an enduring punishment.

69. Like those before you — they were stronger than you in power and more abundant in wealth and children; they enjoyed their portion, and you have enjoyed your portion just as those before you enjoyed their portion, and you have indulged in vain discourse as they delved. Those — their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and it is they who are the losers.

70. Has there not come to them the news of those before them — the people of Noah, Aad, Thamud, the people of Abraham, the companions of Midian, and the overturned cities? Their messengers came to them with clear proofs; Allah would never wrong them, but they were wronging themselves.

71. And the believing men and believing women are allies of one another; they enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, establish prayer, give charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those — Allah will have mercy upon them; surely Allah is Mighty, Wise.

72. Allah has promised the believing men and believing women gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein eternally, and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence; but approval from Allah is greater. That is the supreme triumph.

73. O Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be stern with them. Their refuge is Hell — and wretched is the destination.

74. They swear by Allah that they did not say it, yet certainly they uttered the word of disbelief and disbelieved after their submission, and planned what they could not achieve. And they were resentful only because Allah and His Messenger enriched them from His bounty. So if they repent, it will be better for them; but if they turn away, Allah will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And they will have neither protector nor helper on earth.

75. And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah: "If He gives us from His bounty, we will surely give charity and surely be among the righteous."

76. But when He gave them from His bounty, they became stingy with it and turned away in persistent rejection.

77. So He caused hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day they meet Him, because they broke their promise to Allah and because they used to lie.

78. Do they not know that Allah knows their secrets and their private conversations, and that Allah is the Knower of the unseen?

79. Those who find fault with the believers who voluntarily give charity concerning their charitable contributions, and those who find nothing to give except their own effort — so they ridicule them; Allah ridicules them, and for them is a painful punishment.

80. Ask forgiveness for them, or do not ask forgiveness for them; if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will never forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

81. Those who were left behind rejoiced at staying behind after the Messenger of Allah. They disliked striving with their wealth and their lives in the way of Allah, and said, "Do not go forth in the heat." Say, "The fire of Hell is hotter," if only they understood.

82. So let them laugh a little and weep much, as recompense for what they used to earn.

83. And if Allah returns you to a group of them, and they ask your permission to go forth, say, "You will never go forth with me, nor will you ever fight an enemy with me. Indeed, you were pleased to remain behind the first time, so remain behind with those who lag behind."

84. And never pray over any of them who has died, nor stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and died while they were defiantly disobedient.

85. And let not their wealth and their children impress you; Allah only intends to punish them through these in this world, and their souls expire while they are disbelievers.

86. And when a chapter is revealed, "Believe in Allah and strive along with His Messenger," those of means among them ask your permission and say, "Leave us to be with those who remain behind."

87. They were satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and their hearts were sealed, so they do not understand.

88. But the Messenger and those who believed with him strove with their wealth and their lives; and it is they who will have good things, and it is they who are the successful.

89. Allah has prepared for them Gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever; that is the great triumph.

90. And those among the Desert Arabs who made excuses came, seeking permission to remain behind; and those who lied to Allah and His Messenger stayed behind. A painful punishment will afflict those among them who disbelieved.

91. There is no blame upon the weak, nor upon the sick, nor upon those who find nothing to spend, provided they are true to Allah and His Messenger. There is no cause against those who do good — and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

92. Nor upon those who, when they came to you so that you might provide them with mounts, you said, "I do not have anything to mount you upon"; they turned away, their eyes overflowing with tears, grieving that they found nothing to spend.

93. The cause is only against those who seek your permission while they are wealthy; they are content to be among those who remain behind. Allah has sealed their hearts, so they do not know.

94. They will offer excuses to you when you return to them. Say, "Do not offer excuses; we will never believe you. Allah has already informed us of your news. Allah and His Messenger will see your deeds; then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."

95. They will swear by Allah to you when you return to them, in order that you may turn away from them. So turn away from them; indeed, they are filth, and their refuge is Hell — a recompense for what they used to earn.

96. They swear to you so that you may be pleased with them; but even if you are pleased with them, Allah is not pleased with the defiantly disobedient people.

97. The Desert Arabs are stronger in disbelief and hypocrisy, and more likely not to know the limits of what Allah has revealed to His Messenger — and Allah is Knowing, Wise.

98. And among the Desert Arabs are those who consider what they spend as a loss, and await misfortune to befall you. Upon them is the turn of misfortune — and Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

99. And among the Desert Arabs are those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and regard what they spend as means of nearness to Allah and of receiving the Messenger's prayers. Undoubtedly, it is a means of nearness for them. Allah will admit them into His mercy; indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

100. And the foremost, the first among the Emigrants and the Helpers, and those who followed them with excellence — Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him; and He has prepared for them Gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever. That is the supreme triumph.

101. And among those around you of the Desert Arabs are hypocrites, and among the people of Medina; they persist in hypocrisy. You do not know them; We know them. We will punish them twice; then they will be returned to a great punishment.

102. And others have acknowledged their sins; they have mixed righteous deeds with others that are evil. Perhaps Allah will accept their repentance; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

103. Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and pray for them; surely your prayer is tranquility for them. And Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

104. Do they not know that it is Allah Who accepts repentance from His servants and receives charities, and that it is Allah Who is the Acceptor of repentance, the Merciful?

105. And say, "Act, for Allah will see your deeds, and His Messenger, and the believers; and you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."

106. And others are deferred to the command of Allah — either He will punish them, or He will accept their repentance. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.

107. And those who took a mosque for harm and disbelief, and division among the believers, and as a station for whoever warred against Allah and His Messenger before; and they will surely swear, "We intended nothing but good." And Allah bears witness that they are surely liars.

108. Do not ever stand in it. A mosque founded on piety from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in it; in it are men who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves.

109. Is one who founded his building upon reverence of Allah and His good pleasure better, or one who founded his building upon the edge of a collapsing cliff, so it collapsed with him into the fire of Hell? And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

110. Their building which they built will not cease to be a doubt in their hearts until their hearts are torn apart. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.

111. Surely Allah has purchased from the believers their selves and their wealth, for theirs is Paradise. They fight in the way of Allah, so they kill and are killed — a true promise upon Him in the Torah, and the Gospel, and the Quran. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted; and that is the supreme triumph.

112. Those who repent, those who worship, those who praise, those who journey, those who bow, those who prostrate, those who enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and those who preserve the limits set by Allah — and give glad tidings to the believers.

113. It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the idolaters, even if they were close relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of Hellfire.

114. Abraham's seeking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him; but when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, he disassociated himself from him. Truly, Abraham was tenderhearted, forbearing.

115. Allah would not lead a people astray after having guided them, until He makes clear to them what they should fear; surely, Allah is Knower of all things.

116. Surely, to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He gives life and causes death. And you have, besides Allah, neither protector nor helper.

117. Certainly, Allah has turned in mercy to the Prophet, and to the emigrants and the helpers who followed him in the hour of hardship, after the hearts of a group among them had nearly deviated; then He accepted their repentance. Truly, He is to them Kind, Merciful.

118. And to the three who were left behind, until the earth, despite its vastness, became constricted for them, and their own souls became constricted for them, and they thought there was no refuge from Allah except in Him; then He turned to them in mercy, that they might repent. Truly, Allah is the Acceptor of repentance, the Merciful.

119. O you who believe, fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.

120. It was not fitting for the people of Medina and those around them among the Desert Arabs to remain behind from the Messenger of Allah, nor to prefer themselves over him. That is because no thirst, nor fatigue, nor hunger afflicts them in the way of Allah, nor do they tread any place that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict anything upon an enemy, except that a righteous deed is recorded for them thereby. Surely, Allah does not let the reward of those who do good go to waste.

121. Nor do they spend any expenditure, small or great, nor cross any valley, except that it is recorded for them, that Allah may reward them with the best of what they used to do.

122. And it is not for the believers to go forth all together; so why does not a group from every division among them go forth, to gain understanding in religion and warn their people when they return to them, so that they may beware?

123. O you who believe, fight those who are near to you among the disbelievers, and let them find harshness in you; and know that Allah is with the mindful of Him.

124. And whenever a chapter is revealed, among them are those who say, "Which of you has this increased in faith?" As for those who believe, it has increased them in faith, and they rejoice.

125. But as for those in whose hearts is disease, it has increased them in impurity upon their impurity, and they die while they are disbelievers.

126. Do they not see that they are tested every year once or twice? Yet they neither repent nor do they take heed.

127. And whenever a chapter is revealed, they look at one another: "Does anyone see you?" Then they turn away; Allah has turned away their hearts because they are a people who do not understand.

128. Certainly, there has come to you a Messenger from among yourselves; grievous to him is your suffering, deeply concerned for you, and toward the believers he is kind and merciful.

129. But if they turn away, then say, "Allah is sufficient for me; there is no god except Him. Upon Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne."
