In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
1. A Chapter We have sent down and made obligatory, and We have sent down in it clear verses, that you may remember.
2. The adulteress and the adulterer — lash each one of them with a hundred lashes; and let not compassion for them seize you in the religion of Allah, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day; and let a group of the believers witness their punishment.
3. The adulterer marries none but an adulteress or an idolatress, and the adulteress — none marries her but an adulterer or an idolater; and that is forbidden to the believers.
4. And those who accuse chaste women, then do not bring four witnesses — lash them with eighty lashes, and never accept their testimony thereafter; and those are the defiantly disobedient.
5. Except for those who repent afterward and reform; for Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
6. And those who accuse their spouses and have no witnesses except themselves — the testimony of one of them shall be four testimonies by Allah — that he is surely of the truthful.
7. And the fifth, that the curse of Allah be upon him — if he is of the liars.
8. And it shall avert the punishment from her if she testifies four testimonies by Allah — that he is surely of the liars.
9. And the fifth, that the wrath of Allah be upon her — if he is of the truthful.
10. And were it not for the favor of Allah upon you, and His mercy, and that Allah is Accepting of repentance, Wise.
11. Truly, those who brought forth the slander are a group among you; do not consider it evil for you — rather, it is good for you. For each one among them is what he has earned of sin; and he who took upon himself the greater part of it, for him is a great punishment.
12. Why, when you heard it, did the believing men and believing women not think good of themselves and say, "This is a clear slander"?
13. Why did they not bring forth four witnesses to it? Since they did not bring the witnesses, then it is they who, in the sight of Allah, are the liars.
14. And were it not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, surely a great punishment would have touched you for what you engaged in.
15. When you received it upon your tongues and spoke with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge, and you considered it trivial, while with Allah it was tremendous.
16. And why, when you heard it, did you not say, "It is not for us to speak of this; glory be to You — this is a great slander"?
17. Allah admonishes you never to return to the like of it again, if you are believers.
18. And Allah makes clear to you the verses; and Allah is Knowing, Wise.
19. Truly, those who love that indecency should spread among those who believe — for them is a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter; and Allah knows, and you do not know.
20. And were it not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, and that Allah is Kind, Merciful.
21. O you who believe, do not follow the footsteps of Satan; whoever follows the footsteps of Satan, he commands indecency and wrongdoing. Were it not for Allah's favor upon you and His mercy, not one of you would ever have been purified; but Allah purifies whom He wills — and Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
22. And let not those among you of virtue and wealth swear to withhold giving to relatives, the needy, and those who emigrated in the way of Allah; let them pardon and overlook. Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
23. Truly, those who accuse chaste, unaware, believing women are cursed in this world and the Hereafter; and for them is a great punishment.
24. On the Day when their tongues, their hands, and their feet will testify against them concerning what they used to do.
25. On that Day, Allah will pay them in full their true recompense, and they will know that Allah is the Manifest Truth.
26. Evil women are for evil men, and evil men are for evil women; and good women are for good men, and good men are for good women. Those are innocent of what they say; for them is forgiveness and noble provision.
27. O you who believe, do not enter houses other than your own until you have asked permission and greeted their inhabitants; that is better for you, so that you may be mindful.
28. And if you find no one therein, do not enter them until permission has been given to you; and if it is said to you, "Go back," then go back — it is purer for you. And Allah is Knowing of what you do.
29. There is no blame upon you for entering uninhabited houses wherein is benefit for you; and Allah knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
30. Say to the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity; that is purer for them. Truly, Allah is Aware of what they do.
31. And say to the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to display their adornment except what is apparent thereof; and let them draw their coverings over their chests, and not display their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husbands' fathers, or their sons, or their husbands' sons, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of women's nakedness; and let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, so that you may succeed.
32. And marry the unmarried among you, and the righteous among your male and female servants; if they are poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty — and Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
33. And let those who do not find means for marriage remain chaste until Allah enriches them from His bounty. And those among your dependents who seek a contract of emancipation, make such a contract with them if you know good in them, and give them from the wealth of Allah which He has given you. And do not compel your young women into prostitution if they desire chastity, seeking thereby the temporary gains of worldly life; and whoever compels them, then surely Allah, after their compulsion, is Forgiving, Merciful.
34. And certainly We have sent down to you clear verses, and an example of those who passed away before you, and an admonition for those mindful of Allah.
35. Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His Light is like a niche wherein is a lamp; the lamp is within a glass; the glass as if it were a brilliant star, lit from a blessed olive tree — neither of the east nor of the west — whose oil would almost glow even if no fire touched it. Light upon light. Allah guides to His Light whom He wills; and Allah sets forth examples for humankind — and Allah is All-Knowing of all things.
36. In houses which Allah has permitted to be raised and wherein His name is remembered, glorifying Him therein morning and evening.
37. Are men whom neither commerce nor trade distracts from the remembrance of Allah, and establishing prayer, and giving charity; they fear a Day wherein hearts and eyes will turn about.
38. That Allah may reward them according to the best of what they did, and increase them from His bounty; and Allah provides for whom He wills without measure.
39. And those who disbelieve — their deeds are like a mirage in a desert plain, which the thirsty one supposes to be water, until when he comes to it, he finds it to be nothing, but finds Allah before him, Who pays him his account in full; and Allah is swift in reckoning.
40. Or like darknesses in a deep sea, covered by waves upon waves, above which are clouds — darknesses, one above another; when he stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it. And he for whom Allah has not appointed light — he has no light.
41. Do you not see that Allah is glorified by whoever is in the heavens and the earth, and by the birds with wings outspread? Each has certainly known its prayer and its glorification; and Allah is Knowing of what they do.
42. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; and to Allah is the final return.
43. Do you not see that Allah drives the clouds, then joins them together, then makes them into a mass, and you see the rain emerge from within it? And He sends down from the sky mountains within which is hail, striking with it whom He wills and averting it from whom He wills; the flash of its lightning almost takes away the sight.
44. Allah alternates the night and the day; certainly in that is a lesson for those endowed with sight.
45. And Allah created every creature from water; among them is one that moves on its belly, and among them is one that walks on two legs, and among them is one that walks on four. Allah creates what He wills; certainly Allah is powerful over all things.
46. We have certainly sent down clarifying verses; and Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.
47. And they say, "We believe in Allah and in the Messenger, and we obey"; then a group of them turns away after that — and those are not believers.
48. And when they are called to Allah and His Messenger that he may judge between them, behold, a group of them turns away.
49. But if the right is theirs, they come to him willingly obedient.
50. Is there disease in their hearts, or have they doubted, or do they fear that Allah and His Messenger would deal unjustly with them? Rather, it is they who are the wrongdoers.
51. The only statement of the believers, when they are called to Allah and His Messenger that he may judge between them, is that they say, "We hear and we obey"; and those — it is they who are the successful.
52. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, and fears Allah and is mindful of Him — it is they who are the triumphant.
53. And they swear by Allah their strongest oaths that if you commanded them, they would surely go forth. Say, "Do not swear; obedience is recognized. Certainly Allah is aware of what you do."
54. Say, "Obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away, then upon him is only that with which he has been charged, and upon you is that with which you have been charged. And if you obey him, you will be guided; and nothing is upon the Messenger except clear conveyance."
55. Allah has promised those among you who believe and do righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession on earth, just as He granted succession to those before them; and that He will surely establish for them their religion which He has approved for them; and that He will surely replace their fear with security — they worship Me, associating nothing with Me. And whoever disbelieves after that — it is they who are the defiantly disobedient.
56. And establish prayer, and give charity, and obey the Messenger, that you may receive mercy.
57. Never think that those who disbelieve can escape on earth; their refuge is the Fire — and wretched indeed is the destination.
58. O you who believe, let those whom your right hands possess and those among you who have not reached puberty seek permission from you at three times: before the dawn prayer, when you put aside your garments at noon, and after the night prayer — three times of privacy for you. There is no blame upon you nor upon them beyond these times, as they circulate among you, some of you among others. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses; and Allah is Knowing, Wise.
59. And when the children among you reach puberty, let them seek permission as those before them sought permission. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses; and Allah is Knowing, Wise.
60. And women past childbearing, who no longer anticipate marriage — there is no blame upon them if they lay aside their outer garments, not displaying themselves adorned; yet to modestly refrain is better for them. And Allah is Hearing, Knowing.
61. There is no blame upon the blind, nor blame upon the lame, nor blame upon the sick, nor upon yourselves, that you eat from your houses, or the houses of your fathers, or the houses of your mothers, or the houses of your brothers, or the houses of your sisters, or the houses of your paternal uncles, or the houses of your paternal aunts, or the houses of your maternal uncles, or the houses of your maternal aunts, or from houses whose keys you possess, or from your friend. There is no blame upon you whether you eat together or separately. But when you enter houses, greet one another with a greeting from Allah, blessed and good. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses, that you may understand.
62. The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, and when they are with him upon a collective matter, they do not depart until they have asked his permission. Indeed, those who ask your permission — those are the ones who believe in Allah and His Messenger. So when they ask your permission for some affair of theirs, grant permission to whom you will among them, and ask forgiveness of Allah for them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
63. Do not make your calling of the Messenger among yourselves like your calling of one another. Allah certainly knows those among you who slip away secretly. So let those who oppose his command beware, lest a trial afflict them or a painful punishment befall them.
64. Unquestionably, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. He certainly knows that upon which you are; and on the Day they are returned to Him, He will inform them of what they did. And Allah is Knowing of all things.
