In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

1. They ask you about the spoils of war. Say, "The spoils belong to Allah and the Messenger. So be mindful of Allah, mend your relationships with one another, and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you truly believe."

2. True believers are those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, whose faith grows stronger when His revelations are recited to them, and who place their trust fully in their Lord.

3. They are those who establish prayer, and spend from what We have provided them.

4. These are the true believers. They will have high ranks with their Lord, forgiveness, and a generous provision.

5. Just as your Lord brought you out from your home for a true purpose, though a group of the believers disliked it.

6. Arguing with you about the truth, even after it had become clear, as if they were being driven toward death, while looking on.

7. Remember when Allah promised you, that one of the two groups would be yours, and you wished that the one without arms would be yours. But Allah intended to establish the truth by His words, and to uproot the disbelievers completely.

8. To firmly establish the truth, and to nullify falsehood, even if the guilty despise it.

9. Remember when you cried out to your Lord for help, and He answered, "I will reinforce you with a thousand angels, coming one after another."

10. Allah made this only as good news, and reassurance for your hearts. Victory comes only from Allah — Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.

11. Remember when He covered you with drowsiness, as reassurance from Him, and sent down rain from the sky to purify you, to remove Satan's whispers from you, to strengthen your hearts, and to steady your footsteps.

12. Remember when your Lord inspired the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, so strike above their necks, and strike every fingertip."

13. This is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. Whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger — Allah is severe in punishment.

14. That is yours — so taste it. And for the disbelievers is the punishment of the Fire.

15. O you who believe, when you face the disbelievers advancing in battle, do not turn your backs to flee.

16. Whoever turns his back on that day — unless maneuvering for battle or joining another group — will surely earn Allah's wrath. His home will be Hell, a miserable destination.

17. You did not kill them — Allah is the One who killed them. And you did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw, so that He might grant the believers a gracious favor from Himself. Truly, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

18. This is how it is — Allah weakens the schemes of the disbelievers.

19. If you sought victory, victory has now come to you. But if you cease, it will be better for you. If you return, We will return, and your forces will not help you at all, no matter how numerous they may be. Know that Allah is with the believers.

20. O you who believe, obey Allah and His Messenger, do not turn away from him while you are hearing.

21. Do not be like those who say, "We hear," yet they do not listen.

22. Truly, the worst creatures in Allah's sight are the deaf and mute — those who do not reason.

23. Had Allah known any good in them, He would have made them hear. But even if He had made them hear, they would still have turned away stubbornly.

24. O you who believe, respond to Allah and the Messenger when he calls you to what gives you life. Know that Allah stands between a person and his heart, and that to Him you will all be gathered.

25. Beware of a trial that will not afflict only the wrongdoers among you. Know that Allah's punishment is severe.

26. Remember when you were few, oppressed in the land, afraid that people would snatch you away — then He sheltered you, strengthened you with His help, and provided you with good things, so that you might be grateful.

27. O you who believe, do not betray Allah and the Messenger, and do not betray your trusts while you know.

28. Know that your wealth and your children are only a test, and that with Allah is a tremendous reward.

29. O you who believe, if you remain mindful of Allah, He will grant you a clear criterion to distinguish right from wrong, erase your misdeeds, and forgive you — for Allah is the Lord of immense grace.

30. Remember when those who disbelieved plotted against you — to imprison you, kill you, or drive you out. They schemed, but Allah also planned — and Allah is the best of planners.

31. When Our verses are recited to them, they say, "We have heard; if we wished, we could say something like it. These are nothing but ancient tales."

32. And remember when they said, "O Allah, if this truly is the truth from You, then rain down stones upon us from the sky, or bring upon us a painful punishment."

33. But Allah would not punish them, while you were among them, nor would Allah punish them, while they sought forgiveness.

34. Yet why should Allah not punish them, when they prevent people from the Sacred Mosque, though they are not its rightful guardians? Its true guardians are only those mindful of Allah — but most of them do not realize this.

35. Their prayers at the Sacred House were nothing but whistling and clapping. So taste the punishment for your disbelief.

36. Those who disbelieve spend their wealth to turn people away from Allah's path. They will continue to spend it, but it will become a source of regret for them, and then they will be defeated. Those who disbelieve will be gathered into Hellfire.

37. So that Allah may separate the wicked from the good, placing the wicked one upon another, piling them all together, and casting them into Hellfire. It is they who are the true losers.

38. Say to those who disbelieve: if they cease, what has passed will be forgiven for them. But if they persist, then the fate of earlier peoples has already passed.

39. Fight them until persecution ends, and all worship is devoted to Allah alone. But if they cease, then surely Allah sees all that they do.

40. And if they turn away, then know that Allah is your Protector — the best Protector and the best Helper.

41. Know that whatever gains you acquire, one-fifth belongs to Allah and the Messenger, and to close relatives, orphans, the needy, and travelers. This is so, if you truly believe in Allah, and in what We revealed to Our servant on the Day of Distinction — the day when the two armies met. Allah has power over all things.

42. Remember when you were on the near side of the valley, and they were on the far side, with the caravan below you. Even if you had arranged to meet, you would have missed each other — but Allah brought about what He had destined, so that those who perished did so with clear evidence, and those who survived did so with clear evidence. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

43. Remember when Allah showed them to you in your dream as few in number. Had He shown them as many, you would have lost heart, and argued about the matter — but Allah protected you. He knows well what is within the hearts.

44. And when you met, He made them appear few in your eyes, and made you appear few in theirs, so that Allah might accomplish a matter that was already decreed. To Allah all matters return.

45. Believers, when you face an enemy force, stand firm and remember Allah often, so that you may succeed.

46. Obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute among yourselves, or you will lose courage and your strength will fade. Be patient — Allah is surely with those who are patient.

47. Do not be like those who left their homes arrogantly, showing off to people, and turning others away from Allah's path. Allah fully encompasses all they do.

48. Remember when Satan made their deeds seem attractive to them, saying, "No one among the people can defeat you today — I am surely by your side." But when the two forces came face to face, he turned back on his heels, saying, "I have nothing to do with you — I see what you do not see. I fear Allah, for Allah is severe in punishment."

49. Remember when the hypocrites and those with sickness in their hearts said, "These people are deluded by their religion." But whoever places trust in Allah — Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.

50. If only you could see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved, striking their faces and backs, saying, "Taste the torment of burning!"

51. This is for what your own hands have sent forth. Allah is never unjust to His servants.

52. Like Pharaoh's people and those before them — they rejected Allah's signs, so Allah seized them for their sins. Allah is Powerful, severe in punishment.

53. That is because Allah would never change a blessing He has granted a people, until they change what is within themselves. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

54. Like Pharaoh's people and those before them — they denied the signs of their Lord, so We destroyed them for their sins, and drowned Pharaoh's people. All of them were wrongdoers.

55. Certainly, the worst creatures in Allah's sight are those who disbelieve and refuse to have faith.

56. Those with whom you made agreements, yet they break their promises every single time, and they have no reverence.

57. So if you encounter them in battle, make a fearsome example of them, to deter those behind them, so that they may take heed.

58. And if you fear betrayal from a people, openly declare an end to your treaty with them — Allah surely does not love the treacherous.

59. Let not those who disbelieve think they have escaped; they cannot escape.

60. Prepare against them whatever strength and cavalry you can muster, to strike fear into Allah's enemies and yours, and others unknown to you, but known to Allah. Whatever you spend in Allah's cause will be repaid to you in full, and you will never be wronged.

61. But if they incline toward peace, then incline toward it as well, and place your trust in Allah. He alone is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

62. And if they intend to deceive you, Allah is sufficient for you. He is the One Who strengthened you with His help, and with the believers.

63. And He united their hearts. Even if you had spent all that is on earth, you could never have united their hearts — but Allah has united them. Truly, He is Almighty, All-Wise.

64. O Prophet, Allah is sufficient for you, and for those of the believers who follow you.

65. O Prophet, urge the believers to fight. If there are twenty steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred; and if there are a hundred among you, they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they are a people who do not understand.

66. Now Allah has lightened your burden, knowing there is weakness among you. So if there are a hundred steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred; and if there are a thousand among you, they will overcome two thousand, by Allah's permission. Allah is with those who remain patient.

67. It is not fitting for a prophet to take captives until he has firmly established his authority in the land. You desire the temporary gains of this world, but Allah desires the Hereafter. Allah is Almighty, Wise.

68. Had it not been for a prior decree from Allah, a severe punishment would have surely touched you for what you took.

69. So consume what you have gained, as lawful and good, and remain mindful of Allah. Truly, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

70. O Prophet, say to the captives you hold: "If Allah finds goodness in your hearts, He will grant you something better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."

71. But if they intend to betray you, they have already betrayed Allah before, and He gave you power over them. Allah is All-Knowing, Wise.

72. Those who believed, emigrated, and struggled with their wealth and their lives in Allah's cause, and those who sheltered and supported them — they are allies of one another. As for those who believed, but did not emigrate, you have no obligation of alliance toward them, until they emigrate. Yet if they seek your help in matters of faith, you must help them, except against a people with whom you have a treaty. Allah sees clearly all that you do.

73. Those who disbelieve are allies of one another. Unless you act accordingly, there will be turmoil on earth, and widespread corruption.

74. Those who believed, emigrated, and struggled in Allah's cause, and those who sheltered and supported them — they are the true believers. For them is forgiveness, and a generous provision.

75. And those who believed afterward, emigrated, and struggled alongside you — they too belong with you. But relatives have greater rights toward one another in the Book of Allah. Allah has full knowledge of all things.
