In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

1. O you wrapped in garments.

2. Stand in prayer through the night, except for a little.

3. Half of it, or slightly less.

4. Or a little more — and recite the Quran slowly and clearly.

5. Soon We will send down upon you a weighty message.

6. Rising at night is more conducive to concentration, and more upright in speech.

7. During the day you have much to do.

8. So remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself wholeheartedly to Him.

9. He is Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but Him — so take Him alone as your protector.

10. Be patient with what they say, and distance yourself from them graciously.

11. Leave to Me those who deny the truth and live in luxury; give them a little more time.

12. With Us are heavy shackles and a blazing fire.

13. And food that chokes, and a painful punishment.

14. On the Day when the earth and mountains will tremble, and the mountains will crumble into drifting sand.

15. We have sent you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh.

16. But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a devastating punishment.

17. So how will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, against a Day that will make the children gray-haired?

18. The sky will be split apart on that Day. His promise will surely be fulfilled.

19. This is a reminder — so whoever wishes, let him take a path toward his Lord.

20. Your Lord knows that you stand in prayer nearly two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or a third, along with a group of those with you. Allah determines the length of night and day. He knows you cannot precisely measure it, so He has turned to you in mercy. Therefore, read whatever you can easily manage from the Quran. He knows some of you will be sick, others traveling through the land seeking Allah's bounty, and others fighting in Allah's cause. So read whatever you can easily manage, establish prayer, give charity, and lend Allah a goodly loan. Whatever good you send ahead for yourselves, you will find it with Allah — far better and greater in reward. And seek Allah's forgiveness; Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
