In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

1. A questioner asked about a punishment sure to come.

2. For the disbelievers, none can prevent it.

3. From Allah, Lord of pathways of ascent.

4. The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him on a Day whose length is fifty thousand years.

5. So endure patiently, with beautiful patience.

6. They see it as distant.

7. But We see it as near.

8. On that Day, the sky will be like molten metal.

9. And the mountains like tufts of wool.

10. No close friend will ask about another friend.

11. Though they will be shown clearly to each other. The guilty one will wish he could ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his own children.

12. And his spouse, and his brother.

13. And his family who sheltered him.

14. And everyone on earth altogether — if only this could save him.

15. Never! It is a blazing Fire.

16. Tearing away the skin.

17. Calling out to whoever turned away and fled.

18. And gathered wealth, and hoarded it.

19. Truly, the human being was created anxious.

20. Panicking when harm touches him.

21. And stingy when good fortune comes his way.

22. Except those devoted to prayer.

23. Who remain constant in their prayers.

24. And those in whose wealth is a known share.

25. For the beggar and the deprived.

26. And those who firmly believe in the Day of Judgment.

27. And those who fear the punishment of their Lord.

28. For surely, no one is safe from their Lord's punishment.

29. And those who guard their chastity.

30. Except with their spouses or those under their care, for then they are free from blame.

31. But whoever seeks beyond that — those are the transgressors.

32. And those who faithfully honor their trusts and promises.

33. And those who stand firm in their testimonies.

34. And those who carefully maintain their prayers.

35. They will be honored in Gardens.

36. So what is the matter with those who disbelieve, rushing toward you.

37. From the right and the left, gathering in groups.

38. Does each one of them hope to enter a Garden of bliss?

39. Never! We created them from what they know well.

40. So I swear by the Lord of all points of sunrise and sunset, We are certainly able.

41. To replace them with others better than they are — and nothing can prevent Us.

42. So leave them to indulge in idle talk and play, until they meet their Day which they have been promised.

43. The Day they will rush out of their graves, as if racing toward a goal.

44. Their eyes humbled, overwhelmed by disgrace. That is the Day they were promised.
