In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

1. O you who believe, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, showing them affection, even though they have rejected the truth that has come to you. They have driven out the Messenger and yourselves simply because you believe in Allah, your Lord. If you have truly set out to strive in My path and seek My pleasure, how can you secretly offer them affection? Yet I know well all that you conceal and all that you reveal. Whoever among you does this has surely strayed from the right path.

2. If they gain the upper hand over you, they will become your open enemies, stretching out their hands and tongues against you with evil intent, wishing that you would abandon your faith.

3. Neither your relatives nor your children will benefit you on the Day of Resurrection — He will separate you from one another. Allah sees clearly all that you do.

4. You have an excellent example in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, "We completely disown you and whatever you worship besides Allah. We reject you, and between us and you there will be hostility and hatred forever, until you believe in Allah alone." The only exception was Abraham's saying to his father, "I will surely ask forgiveness for you, though I have no power to help you against Allah." Our Lord, in You we trust, to You we turn in repentance, and to You is our final return.

5. Our Lord, do not make us a trial for those who disbelieve, and forgive us, our Lord. Truly, You alone are the Almighty, the All-Wise."

6. Certainly, in them you have an excellent example for whoever places hope in Allah and the Last Day. But whoever turns away — then surely Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.

7. Perhaps Allah will create affection between you and those you now consider enemies. Allah is All-Powerful, and Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

8. Allah does not forbid you from showing kindness and dealing justly with those who have neither fought you because of your religion nor driven you from your homes. Allah loves those who act justly.

9. Allah only forbids you from taking as allies those who fought against you because of your religion, expelled you from your homes, and supported others in driving you out. Whoever takes them as allies — those are the wrongdoers.

10. O you who believe, when believing women come to you as emigrants, test them — Allah knows best about their faith. If you find them truly believing, do not send them back to the disbelievers. Neither are these women lawful for them, nor are those men lawful for these women. But repay the disbelievers whatever they have spent. There is no blame upon you if you marry these women, provided you give them their rightful bridal gifts. And do not hold onto marriages with disbelieving women. Ask for repayment of what you have spent, and let them ask for repayment of what they have spent. This is Allah's judgment; He judges between you. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

11. And if any of your wives leave you for the disbelievers, and afterward you gain compensation, then give those whose wives have left an amount equal to what they had spent. Be mindful of Allah, in Whom you believe.

12. O Prophet, when believing women come to pledge allegiance to you — that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill their children, nor bring forth slander they invent between their hands and feet, nor disobey you in any righteous matter — then accept their pledge and seek Allah's forgiveness for them. Truly, Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

13. O you who believe, do not ally yourselves with people upon whom Allah's anger has fallen. They have lost all hope in the Hereafter, as the disbelievers have despaired of the inhabitants of the graves.
