In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
1. Allah has certainly heard the words of the woman who argues with you about her husband and complains to Allah. Allah hears your conversation — truly, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
2. Those among you who declare their wives unlawful to them by likening them to their mothers — they are not their mothers. Their mothers are only those who gave birth to them. They are surely speaking words that are offensive and false. Yet Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving.
3. Those who declare their wives unlawful in this way, then wish to retract what they said, must free a captive before they may touch each other again. This is what you are instructed to do, and Allah is fully aware of all that you do.
4. But whoever cannot find a captive to free must fast two consecutive months before they touch each other again. And whoever is unable to fast must feed sixty needy people. This is so that you may truly believe in Allah and His Messenger. These are the limits set by Allah, and for those who reject the truth, there is a painful punishment.
5. Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger will be humbled, just as those before them were humbled. We have sent down clear revelations, and for those who deny, there is a humiliating punishment.
6. On the Day when Allah raises them all, He will inform them of everything they did. Allah has recorded it all, though they have forgotten it. And Allah is Witness over all things.
7. Do you not see that Allah knows everything in the heavens and everything on earth? There is no secret conversation among three, without Him being their fourth, nor among five, without Him being their sixth — nor fewer nor more than that without Him being with them wherever they are. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, He will inform them of all they did. Truly, Allah has full knowledge of everything.
8. Have you not seen those who were forbidden from secret conversations, yet they return to what they were forbidden from, secretly plotting sin, hostility, and disobedience to the Messenger? And when they come to you, they greet you with words Allah never greeted you with, and say to themselves, "Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?" Hell is enough for them — they will burn in it. What a miserable destination!
9. O you who believe, when you speak privately together, do not speak secretly about sin, hostility, or disobedience to the Messenger. Rather, speak privately about righteousness and piety. Be mindful of Allah, to Whom you will all be gathered.
10. Secret conversations are inspired by Satan, only to sadden the believers. Yet he cannot harm them in the least without Allah's permission. So let the believers put their trust in Allah.
11. O you who believe, when you are asked to make room in gatherings, then make room — Allah will make room for you. And when you are asked to rise, then rise. Allah will elevate in rank those among you who believe and those who have been granted knowledge. Allah is fully aware of all that you do.
12. O you who believe, when you wish to speak privately with the Messenger, offer charity beforehand. That is better and purer for you. But if you cannot find the means, then surely Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
13. Are you hesitant to offer charity before your private conversations? Since you did not do so, and Allah has pardoned you, then establish prayer, give charity regularly, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah is fully aware of all that you do.
14. Have you not seen those who ally themselves with people upon whom Allah's anger has fallen? They belong neither to you nor to them, and they knowingly swear to lies.
15. Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment. Evil is what they have been doing.
16. They use their oaths as a shield, turning others away from Allah's path. For them is a humiliating punishment.
17. Neither their wealth nor their children will help them at all against Allah. They are the companions of the Fire, remaining there forever.
18. On the Day when Allah raises them all, they will swear to Him just as they swear to you now, thinking they stand on something. Surely, they are the liars.
19. Satan has taken hold of them, causing them to forget the remembrance of Allah. They are Satan's party. Surely, Satan's party are the losers.
20. Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger will surely be among the most disgraced.
21. Allah has decreed: "I and My messengers will certainly prevail." Allah is Powerful, Almighty.
22. You will never find people who believe in Allah and the Last Day showing affection to those who oppose Allah and His Messenger — even if they were their fathers, their sons, their brothers, or their own relatives. Allah has inscribed faith upon their hearts and strengthened them with a spirit from Him. He will admit them into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, to remain there forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. They are Allah's party. Certainly, Allah's party are the successful.
