In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
1. O you who believe, fulfill your commitments. Grazing livestock have been made lawful for you, except what is recited to you. Hunting is forbidden while you are in the state of pilgrimage. Allah commands whatever He wills.
2. O you who believe, do not violate the sacred rites of Allah, nor the sacred month, nor the sacrificial animals, nor the garlanded offerings, nor those heading toward the Sacred House, seeking their Lord's bounty and approval. But when you have completed your pilgrimage, you may hunt. Do not let hatred toward a people who once barred you from the Sacred Mosque, lead you to transgress. Cooperate with one another in righteousness and reverence, and do not cooperate in sin and aggression. Be mindful of Allah, for Allah is severe in punishment.
3. Forbidden to you are carrion, blood, pork, animals slaughtered in the name of other than Allah, animals strangled, beaten to death, fallen, gored, or mauled by wild beasts — unless you properly slaughter them — and animals sacrificed on altars, and seeking decisions through divining arrows. All these are sinful acts. Today those who disbelieve have lost all hope of your religion, so do not fear them, but fear Me. Today, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and chosen Islam as your way of life. Yet whoever is compelled by severe hunger, without willful disobedience, then Allah is truly Forgiving, Merciful.
4. They ask you what is lawful for them. Say, "All good things are lawful for you, as well as what you have taught your trained hunting animals to catch, teaching them from what Allah has taught you. So eat from what they catch for you, and pronounce Allah's name over it. Be mindful of Allah, for Allah is swift in reckoning."
5. Today, all good things have been made lawful for you. The food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. Likewise, chaste believing women, and chaste women from among those who received the Scripture before you, are lawful for marriage, provided you give them their due bridal gifts, marrying honorably, not committing fornication, nor taking secret lovers. Whoever rejects faith, their deeds will be worthless, and in the Hereafter, they will be among the losers.
6. O you who believe, when you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles. If you are in a state of major impurity, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill, or traveling, or one of you has come from relieving himself, or you have touched women, and cannot find water, then seek clean earth, and wipe your faces and hands with it. Allah does not wish to burden you, but He wishes to purify you, and complete His favor upon you, so that you may be grateful.
7. Remember Allah's favor upon you, and the covenant He made with you, when you said, "We hear and we obey." Be mindful of Allah, for Allah knows well what lies within the hearts.
8. O you who believe, stand firmly for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people cause you to not be just. Be just — that is closer to righteousness. Be mindful of Allah, for Allah is fully aware of all that you do.
9. Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds — forgiveness and a great reward.
10. But those who disbelieve and deny Our signs — they are the companions of Hellfire.
11. O you who believe, remember Allah's favor upon, you when certain people intended to stretch out their hands against you, but He restrained their hands from you. Be mindful of Allah, and let the believers place their trust in Allah alone.
12. Allah certainly took a covenant from the Children of Israel, and We appointed twelve leaders from among them. Allah said, "I am with you. If you establish prayer, give charity, believe in My messengers, support them, and lend Allah a goodly loan, I will surely erase your sins, and admit you into Gardens beneath which rivers flow. But whoever among you rejects faith after this, has truly strayed from the right path."
13. Yet because they broke their covenant, We cursed them and hardened their hearts. They distort words from their proper meanings, and have forgotten much of what they were reminded of. You will always discover treachery among them, except for a few. Still, pardon them and overlook — Allah loves those who do good.
14. And from those who say, "We are Christians," We also took a covenant, but they too forgot much of what they were reminded of. So We stirred up hostility and hatred among them, until the Day of Resurrection. Allah will soon inform them of all they used to do.
15. O People of the Scripture, Our Messenger has come to you, clarifying much of what you used to hide from the Scripture, and overlooking much. A light and a clear Book have now come to you from Allah.
16. Through it, Allah guides those who seek His pleasure to paths of peace, bringing them out of darkness into the light by His permission, and guiding them to a straight path.
17. Those who say, "Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary," have surely disbelieved. Say, "Who could prevent Allah if He wished to destroy the Messiah, son of Mary, his mother, and everyone on earth?" To Allah alone belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and everything between them. He creates whatever He wills, and Allah has power over all things.
18. The Jews and Christians say, "We are Allah's children, and His beloved." Say, "Then why does He punish you for your sins? Rather, you are human beings, among those He created. He forgives whom He wills, and punishes whom He wills. To Allah alone belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and everything between them, and to Him is the final return."
19. O People of the Scripture, Our Messenger has now come to you, making things clear after a long pause between messengers, so you cannot say, "No bearer of good news or warner ever came to us." Now a bearer of good news and a warner has indeed come to you. Allah has power over all things.
20. And remember when Moses said to his people, "My people, recall Allah's favor upon you — how He raised prophets among you, made you kings, and granted you what He had not given to anyone else in all the world."
21. "My people, enter the sacred land that Allah has decreed for you, and do not turn back, or you will become losers."
22. They said, "Moses, there are mighty people in that land. We will never enter it, until they leave. If they leave, then we will surely enter."
23. Two men from among those who feared, and whom Allah had blessed, said, "Enter upon them through the gate. Once you enter, you will surely prevail. Put your trust in Allah, if you truly believe."
24. They said, "Moses, we will never enter it, as long as they remain there. Go, you and your Lord, and fight. We will stay right here."
25. Moses said, "My Lord, I have control only over myself and my brother. So separate us from these rebellious people."
26. Allah said, "Then this land will be forbidden to them for forty years, during which they will wander aimlessly on earth. So do not grieve over these rebellious people."
27. Recite to them the true story of Adam's two sons: when each offered a sacrifice, it was accepted from one, but not from the other. He said, "I will surely kill you." The other replied, "Allah accepts only from those who are mindful of Him."
28. "Even if you raise your hand to kill me, I will not raise mine to kill you. I fear Allah, Lord of all the worlds."
29. "I want you to bear my sin, along with your own, becoming one of the companions of the Fire. That is the reward of the wrongdoers."
30. Yet his soul drove him to murder his brother, so he killed him, becoming one of the losers.
31. Then Allah sent a crow, scratching at the ground, to show him how to bury his brother's body. He cried out, "How terrible for me! Am I unable even to be like this crow, burying my brother's body?" And he became filled with remorse.
32. Because of this, We decreed for the Children of Israel, that whoever kills a human being — unless for murder or spreading corruption on earth — it is as if he has killed all humankind; and whoever saves a life, it is as if he has saved all humankind. Our messengers came to them with clear proofs, yet even after that, many of them continued committing excesses on earth.
33. The punishment for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, spreading corruption throughout the land, is that they be killed, or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. This is their disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter, they will suffer a tremendous punishment.
34. Except for those who repent before you overpower them. Know that Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
35. O you who believe, be mindful of Allah, seek ways to draw closer to Him, and strive in His path, so that you may succeed.
36. As for those who disbelieve, even if they possessed everything on earth, and twice as much again, to ransom themselves from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection, it would never be accepted from them. They will face a painful punishment.
37. They will wish to get out of the Fire, but they will not get out of it. Theirs will be an everlasting punishment.
38. As for the thief, male or female, cut off their hands as a penalty for what they have done, a deterrent from Allah. Allah is Almighty, Wise.
39. But whoever repents after committing wrongdoing, and reforms, Allah will surely accept their repentance. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
40. Do you not know that Allah alone has sovereignty over the heavens and the earth? He punishes whom He wills, and forgives whom He wills. Allah has power over all things.
41. Messenger, do not grieve over those who rush eagerly into disbelief — those who say with their mouths, "We believe," while their hearts do not believe. And among the Jews, are listeners to lies, listening on behalf of others who have not come to you. They distort words from their proper meanings, saying, "If you are given this ruling, accept it; but if not, beware." Whomever Allah intends to test, you cannot help him against Allah at all. These are the ones whose hearts Allah does not wish to purify. They will suffer disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter, they will have a tremendous punishment.
42. Listeners to lies, and devourers of unlawful gain. If they come to you, judge between them, or turn away from them. If you turn away from them, they cannot harm you in the least. But if you judge, judge between them with fairness. Truly, Allah loves those who are just.
43. Yet how can they ask you to judge, when they have the Torah, containing Allah's judgment, and still they turn away afterward? These people are not believers.
44. Certainly, We revealed the Torah, containing guidance and light. By it, the prophets who submitted judged among the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars, entrusted with preserving Allah's Scripture, and bearing witness to it. So do not fear people — fear Me, and do not trade My revelations for a small price. Those who do not judge by what Allah has revealed — they are the disbelievers.
45. And in it, We ordained for them: life for life, eye for eye, nose for nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and equal retribution for wounds. But whoever forgoes it, it will serve as atonement for him. Those who do not judge by what Allah has revealed — they are the wrongdoers.
46. Then, following in their footsteps, We sent Jesus, son of Mary, confirming the Torah that came before him. We gave him the Gospel, containing guidance and light, confirming the Torah before it, and serving as guidance and counsel for those mindful of Allah.
47. Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah has revealed in it. Those who do not judge by what Allah has revealed — they are the disobedient.
48. And We have revealed to you the Scripture in truth, confirming the Scriptures that came before it, and serving as a guardian over them. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed, and do not follow their desires, away from the truth that has come to you. For each of you, We have established a law, and a clear path. Had Allah willed, He could have made you one community, but He tests you through what He has given you. So compete with one another in doing good. To Allah you will all return, and He will inform you about your differences.
49. Judge between them by what Allah has revealed, and do not follow their desires. Be cautious, lest they tempt you away from some of what Allah has revealed to you. If they turn away, know that Allah intends to afflict them for some of their sins. Truly, many people are rebellious.
50. Do they seek the judgment of ignorance? Who could be better than Allah in judgment for people who have firm faith?
51. O you who believe, do not take the Jews and Christians as allies; they are allies of one another. Whoever among you allies himself with them becomes one of them. Allah does not guide unjust people.
52. You see those with sickness in their hearts rushing eagerly toward them, saying, "We fear that misfortune may strike us." But perhaps Allah will bring victory, or a decree from Himself, and then they will regret what they secretly harbored within themselves.
53. Then the believers will say, "Are these the ones who swore solemnly by Allah, that they were truly with you?" Their deeds have come to nothing, and they have become losers.
54. O you who believe, whoever among you turns away from his religion, Allah will soon bring forth a people whom He loves, and who love Him — humble toward the believers, stern against the unbelievers, striving in Allah's cause, and unafraid of any critic's blame. This is Allah's grace; He grants it to whomever He wills. Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
55. Your ally is Allah, His Messenger, and the believers — those who establish prayer, give charity, and bow down.
56. Whoever allies himself with Allah, His Messenger, and the believers — truly, Allah's party will prevail.
57. O you who believe, do not take as allies those who mock and ridicule your religion, whether from among those given the Scripture before you, or from the disbelievers. Be mindful of Allah, if you truly believe.
58. When you call to prayer, they mock and ridicule it. This is because they are people who do not understand.
59. Say, "O People of the Scripture, do you resent us only because we believe in Allah, in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed before, and because most of you are defiantly disobedient?"
60. Say, "Shall I inform you of those who deserve an even worse recompense from Allah? Those whom Allah has cursed, upon whom He has poured His wrath, and whom He transformed into apes and pigs, and those who worshiped tyrants — these are far worse in position, and further astray from the right path."
61. When they come to you, they say, "We believe," yet they entered with disbelief, and left with it. Allah knows best what they conceal.
62. You see many of them rushing eagerly into sin and hostility, and consuming what is unlawful. How evil is what they have been doing!
63. Why do their rabbis and scholars not forbid them from speaking sinfully and consuming what is unlawful? How evil is what they have been committing!
64. The Jews say, "Allah's hand is tied." May their own hands be tied, and may they be cursed for what they say! Rather, His hands are wide open — He gives freely as He wills. Yet what your Lord has revealed to you will only increase many of them in defiance and disbelief. We have placed hostility and hatred among them, until the Day of Resurrection. Whenever they kindle the flames of war, Allah extinguishes them. They strive to spread corruption on earth, but Allah does not love those who spread corruption.
65. If only the People of the Scripture had believed and been mindful of Allah, We would have erased their sins, and brought them into Gardens of bliss.
66. If they had upheld the Torah, the Gospel, and what was revealed to them from their Lord, they would have consumed from above and beneath their feet. Among them are some who are moderate, but many of them commit terrible deeds.
67. O Messenger, convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord. If you do not, then you have not delivered His message. Allah will protect you from the people. Certainly, Allah does not guide those who refuse to believe.
68. Say, "O People of the Scripture, you have no foundation until you uphold the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord." Yet what your Lord has revealed to you will only increase many of them in arrogance and disbelief. So do not grieve over those who refuse to believe.
69. Truly, those who believe, and those who are Jews, Sabians, and Christians — whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, and does good deeds — they will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
70. We took a solemn pledge from the Children of Israel, and sent messengers to them. But whenever a messenger came to them with something their souls disliked, they rejected some and killed others.
71. They thought no trial would come, so they became blind and deaf. Then Allah turned to them in forgiveness, yet again many of them became blind and deaf. Allah sees clearly all that they do.
72. Certainly, those who say, "Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary," have disbelieved. Yet the Messiah himself said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah — my Lord and your Lord. Whoever associates others with Allah, Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and his home will be the Fire. The wrongdoers will have no helpers."
73. Certainly, those who say, "Allah is the third of three," have disbelieved. There is no god except One God. If they do not stop saying this, a painful punishment will surely afflict those among them who disbelieve.
74. Will they not turn back to Allah, and seek His forgiveness? Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
75. The Messiah, son of Mary, was only a messenger; messengers before him have passed away. His mother was a truthful woman. Both of them ate food. See how clearly We make the signs known to them, yet see how they turn away.
76. Say, "Do you worship besides Allah something that has no power to harm or benefit you? Allah alone is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."
77. Say, "O People of the Scripture, do not exaggerate in your religion, nor follow the desires of those who went astray before, who misled many others, and themselves strayed far from the right path."
78. Those among the Children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed by the tongues of David and Jesus, son of Mary. This was because they disobeyed and persistently transgressed.
79. They would not forbid one another from the wrongdoing they committed. How terrible was what they used to do!
80. You see many of them allying themselves with those who disbelieve. How wretched is what their souls have prepared for them: that Allah is angry with them, and they will remain in punishment forever.
81. Had they believed in Allah, the Prophet, and what was revealed to him, they would not have taken those disbelievers as allies. But many of them are defiantly disobedient.
82. You will find that the strongest in hostility toward the believers, are the Jews, and those who associate others with Allah. And you will find that the closest in affection toward the believers, are those who say, "We are Christians." That is because among them are priests and monks, and because they are not arrogant.
83. When they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears, recognizing the truth. They say, "Our Lord, we believe, so count us among those who bear witness."
84. Why should we not believe in Allah, and the truth that has come to us, when we long for our Lord to include us among the righteous people?
85. So Allah rewarded them for what they said, with Gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will remain forever. Such is the reward of those who do good.
86. But those who disbelieve and deny Our revelations — they are the companions of the blazing Fire.
87. O you who believe, do not forbid yourselves the good things that Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress limits. Allah does not love those who transgress.
88. Eat from the good, lawful things that Allah has provided for you, and remain mindful of Allah, in Whom you believe.
89. Allah will not hold you accountable for careless oaths, but He will hold you accountable for deliberate oaths you have sworn. The atonement for breaking such an oath is to feed ten needy people with the average food you provide your own families, or to clothe them, or to free a captive. Whoever cannot afford this must fast for three days. This is the atonement for the oaths you have sworn. So guard your oaths. This is how Allah makes clear His revelations to you, so that you may be grateful.
90. O you who believe, intoxicants, gambling, stone altars, and divining arrows, are filthy works of Satan — so avoid them, that you may succeed.
91. Satan only wants to stir up hostility and hatred among you through intoxicants and gambling, and to prevent you from remembering Allah and performing prayer. Will you not then abstain?
92. Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and be cautious. But if you turn away, then know that Our Messenger's duty is only to deliver the clear message.
93. Those who believe, and do righteous deeds, bear no blame for what they previously consumed, as long as they remain mindful of Allah, believe, and do righteous deeds; then remain mindful of Allah, and believe; then remain mindful of Allah, and excel in goodness. Allah loves those who excel in goodness.
94. O you who believe, Allah will surely test you with some game within reach of your hands and spears, so that Allah may reveal who fears Him unseen. Whoever transgresses after this, will suffer a painful punishment.
95. O you who believe, do not kill game while you are in the state of pilgrimage sanctity. Whoever among you intentionally kills it, must offer compensation equal to the animal killed, judged by two just persons among you — an offering brought to the Kaaba — or else atonement by feeding the needy, or fasting an equivalent number of days, so that he may taste the consequences of his deed. Allah has pardoned what is past. But whoever repeats the offense, Allah will take vengeance upon him. Allah is Almighty, capable of vengeance.
96. Permitted for you is the game of the sea, and its food, as provision for you, and for travelers. But forbidden to you is the hunting of land animals, as long as you remain in pilgrimage sanctity. Be mindful of Allah, to Whom you will all be gathered.
97. Allah has made the Kaaba — the Sacred House — a sanctuary, and a source of stability for people, as well as the sacred months, the sacrificial offerings, and the garlanded animals. This is so you may know that Allah is fully aware of all that is in the heavens and the earth, and that Allah has complete knowledge of everything.
98. Know that Allah is severe in punishment, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
99. The Messenger's duty is only to deliver the message. Allah knows all that you reveal, and all that you conceal.
100. Say, "The impure and the pure are not equal, even if the abundance of impurity impresses you." So be mindful of Allah, O people of understanding, so that you may succeed.
101. O you who believe, do not ask about matters, which, if revealed to you, would trouble you. Yet if you ask about them while the Quran is being revealed, they will be made clear to you. Allah has pardoned these matters, for Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing.
102. People before you asked such questions, then became disbelievers because of them.
103. Allah has not ordained practices such as Bahirah, Saibah, Wasilah, or Haam. Rather, those who disbelieve invent lies against Allah, and most of them do not reason.
104. When it is said to them, "Come to what Allah has revealed, and to the Messenger," they reply, "What we found our forefathers following is enough for us." Even though their forefathers knew nothing, and were not guided?
105. O you who believe, you are responsible for your own souls. Those who stray cannot harm you if you remain guided. To Allah you will all return, and He will inform you of everything you used to do.
106. O you who believe, when death approaches one of you, let two just witnesses from among yourselves testify at the time of making a will — or two others from outside your community, if you are traveling through the land, and the calamity of death overtakes you. Detain them after prayer, and if you doubt their honesty, let them swear by Allah: "We will not trade our testimony for any price, even if it concerns a close relative, nor will we conceal Allah's testimony — otherwise, we would surely be among the sinful."
107. But if it is discovered that these two are guilty of wrongdoing, let two others stand in their place, from among those who have a rightful claim against them, and let them swear by Allah: "Our testimony is truer than theirs, and we have not transgressed — otherwise, we would surely be among the unjust."
108. This makes it more likely that witnesses will give truthful testimony, fearing that their oaths might be challenged by others afterward. Be mindful of Allah, and listen carefully. Allah does not guide those who defiantly disobey.
109. On the Day when Allah gathers the messengers, and asks, "What response did you receive?" They will say, "We have no knowledge; You alone are the Knower of all unseen things."
110. When Allah said, "O Jesus, son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother — how I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit, so you spoke to people from the cradle and in maturity; how I taught you the Scripture and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel; how, by My permission, you shaped from clay the likeness of a bird, breathed into it, and it became a bird by My permission; how you healed the blind and the leper by My permission; how you raised the dead by My permission; and how I protected you from the Children of Israel when you brought them clear miracles, yet those among them who disbelieved said, 'This is nothing but obvious magic.'"
111. And when I inspired the disciples, "Believe in Me, and in My messenger," they replied, "We believe; bear witness, that we are submitters."
112. When the disciples said, "O Jesus, son of Mary, can your Lord send down to us a table-spread from heaven?" He answered, "Be mindful of Allah, if you truly believe."
113. They said, "We wish to eat from it, so our hearts may be reassured, and we may know that you have spoken the truth, and we ourselves may be witnesses to it."
114. Jesus, son of Mary, prayed, "O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table-spread from heaven, to be a festival for us — for the first of us and the last of us — and a sign from You. Provide for us, for You are the best of providers."
115. Allah replied, "I will surely send it down to you. But whoever among you disbelieves afterward, I will punish him with a punishment unlike any I have inflicted upon anyone in all the worlds."
116. And when Allah said, "O Jesus, son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as gods besides Allah'?" He answered, "Glory be to You! It is not for me to say what I have no right to say. Had I said it, You would surely have known it. You know all that is within me, while I do not know what is within You. Truly, You alone are the Knower of all unseen things."
117. "I said nothing to them, except what You commanded me: 'Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.' I was a witness over them as long as I remained among them, but when You took me back, You Yourself were the Watcher over them — and You are Witness over all things."
118. "If You punish them, they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, You alone are the Almighty, the All-Wise."
119. Allah will say, "This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness. For them are Gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will remain forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. That is the supreme triumph."
120. To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is within them, and He has power over all things.
