In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

1. Those who disbelieve and turn others away from Allah's path — He will render their deeds worthless.

2. But those who believe, do righteous deeds, and believe in what was revealed to Muhammad — which is the truth from their Lord — He will erase their sins and set their hearts at peace.

3. This is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, while those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. This is how Allah presents examples to people.

4. So when you meet those who disbelieve in battle, strike their necks until you have thoroughly subdued them, then bind them firmly. Afterward, either release them graciously or ransom them, until the war lays down its burdens. Had Allah willed, He could have defeated them Himself, but He tests some of you through others. As for those killed in Allah's cause, He will never let their deeds go to waste.

5. He will guide them, and set their hearts at peace.

6. And admit them into Paradise, which He has made known to them.

7. O you who believe! If you support Allah, He will support you and make your steps firm.

8. But as for those who disbelieve — ruin awaits them, and He will render their deeds worthless.

9. That is because they detest what Allah has revealed, so He has nullified their deeds.

10. Have they not traveled through the land, and seen the fate of those who came before them? Allah utterly destroyed them — and the disbelievers will face the same.

11. That is because Allah is the Protector of those who believe, while the disbelievers have no protector.

12. Allah will surely admit those who believe and do righteous deeds into Gardens beneath which rivers flow. But those who disbelieve — they enjoy themselves and eat as cattle eat, and the Fire will be their home.

13. How many towns, stronger than your town which expelled you, have We destroyed? And they had no helper.

14. Can someone who stands upon clear evidence from his Lord, be compared to one whose evil deeds are made attractive to him, and who follows his own desires?

15. The description of Paradise promised to those mindful of Allah: rivers of water never stagnant, rivers of milk whose taste never changes, rivers of wine delightful to those who drink, and rivers of pure honey. There they will have every kind of fruit, and forgiveness from their Lord. Can they be compared to those who will dwell forever in the Fire, drinking boiling water that tears apart their insides?

16. Among them are some who listen to you, but as soon as they leave your presence, they ask those given knowledge, "What did he just say?" These are the ones whose hearts Allah has sealed, and who follow their own desires.

17. But those who accept guidance — He increases them in guidance and grants them their reverence.

18. Are they waiting for anything except the Hour to come upon them suddenly? Its signs have already appeared. But what good will their reminder be when it finally arrives?

19. So know that there is no god but Allah, and seek forgiveness for your sins and for the believing men and women. Allah knows your movements and your resting places.

20. Those who believe say, "Why hasn't a chapter been revealed?" Yet when a decisive chapter is revealed, clearly mentioning fighting, you see those with sickness in their hearts staring at you, as if they were fainting from the fear of death. Woe to them.

21. Obedience and good words. Then, when the matter is resolved, if they were truthful to Allah, it would surely be better for them.

22. Is it then expected of you, if you turn away, that you will spread corruption on earth and sever your family ties?

23. Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed, making them deaf and blinding their sight.

24. Do they not reflect deeply upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?

25. Certainly, those who turn back after guidance has become clear to them — Satan has enticed them and filled them with false hopes.

26. That is because they said to those who despise what Allah has revealed, "We will obey you in some matters." But Allah knows their secrets.

27. Then how will it be, when the angels take their souls, striking their faces and their backs?

28. That is because they followed what angers Allah, and they hated what pleases Him, so He rendered their deeds worthless.

29. Do those with sickness in their hearts think Allah will never expose their hidden grudges?

30. If We wished, We could surely show them to you, and you would recognize them by their marks. And you will certainly recognize them by their tone of speech. Allah knows all your deeds.

31. We will surely test you, until We distinguish those among you who strive and patiently endure; and We will test your reports.

32. Those who disbelieve, obstruct others from Allah's path, and oppose the Messenger after guidance has become clear to them — they will never harm Allah in the least, and He will render their deeds worthless.

33. O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and do not let your deeds go to waste.

34. Those who disbelieve, obstruct others from Allah's path, and then die as disbelievers — Allah will never forgive them.

35. Do not lose heart or call for peace when you are superior. Allah is with you, and He will never deprive you of the reward for your deeds.

36. This worldly life is nothing but play and amusement. But if you believe and remain mindful of Allah, He will grant you your rewards and will not ask you for your wealth.

37. If He were to demand it from you persistently, you would become miserly, and He would expose your hidden grudges.

38. Here you are, invited to spend in Allah's cause, yet some among you hold back. Whoever holds back only withholds from himself. Allah is the Self-Sufficient, while you are the ones in need. And if you turn away, He will replace you with another people, and they will not be like you.
