In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

1. O Prophet, be mindful of Allah, and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

2. Follow what is revealed to you from your Lord. Allah is fully aware of all that you do.

3. Put your trust in Allah — Allah is sufficient as a Trustee.

4. Allah has not placed two hearts within any man's chest, nor has He made your wives whom you declare unlawful to yourselves your mothers, nor has He made your adopted sons your sons. These are merely words you utter with your mouths, but Allah speaks the truth, and He guides to the right way.

5. Call them by their fathers' names — that is fairer in Allah's sight. If you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in faith and your dependents. There is no blame upon you for mistakes you unintentionally make, but only for what your hearts deliberately intend. Allah is always Forgiving, Merciful.

6. The Prophet is closer to the believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers. Blood relatives have greater rights toward one another, according to Allah's decree, than other believers and emigrants — unless you wish to show kindness to your close associates. This is clearly recorded in the Book.

7. Remember when We took a solemn pledge from the prophets — from you, and from Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, son of Mary. We took from them a firm and binding covenant.

8. So that He may question the truthful about their truthfulness. And He has prepared a painful punishment for the unbelievers.

9. O you who believe, remember Allah's favor upon you, when armies advanced against you, and We sent against them a fierce wind, and forces you could not see. Allah was ever watchful over all you did.

10. When they came at you from above and below, your eyes grew wide with fear, your hearts rose to your throats, and you began to harbor all sorts of thoughts about Allah.

11. There, the believers were severely tested, and shaken to their very core.

12. And when the hypocrites and those with sickness in their hearts said, "Allah and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusions."

13. And when a group among them said, "People of Yathrib, you cannot withstand this — turn back!" And some of them asked the Prophet's permission, saying, "Our homes are exposed," but they were not exposed. They only wanted to flee.

14. If they had entered upon them from all sides, and they had been urged to betrayal, they would have surely committed it, hardly hesitating at all.

15. Yet they had previously pledged to Allah never to turn their backs — the covenant with Allah will be questioned.

16. Say, "Fleeing will never benefit you if you run from death or killing; even then, you would enjoy life only briefly."

17. Say, "Who can protect you from Allah, if He intends harm for you, or if He intends mercy?" They will find no protector or helper besides Allah.

18. Allah certainly knows those among you who hinder others, and say to their brothers, "Come join us," rarely coming forward to fight themselves.

19. They are stingy toward you. When danger approaches, you see them staring at you, their eyes rolling like someone fainting at the brink of death. But when the danger passes, they lash out at you with sharp tongues; begrudging of good. Such people never truly believed, so Allah has rendered their deeds worthless — and that is easy for Allah.

20. They still think the enemy forces have not withdrawn. And if those armies were to return, they would wish they were far away among the desert dwellers, asking about your news from afar. Even if they were among you, they would hardly fight at all.

21. Certainly, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example — for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often.

22. When the believers saw the enemy forces, they said, "This is exactly what Allah and His Messenger promised us; Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth." It only increased their faith and submission.

23. Among the believers are men who have remained true to the promise they made to Allah. Some of them have fulfilled their vow, while others still wait, they did not change in the least.

24. Allah will reward the truthful for their truthfulness, and punish the hypocrites if He wills, or accept their repentance. Truly, Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.

25. Allah turned back the disbelievers in their rage — they attained no good. Allah spared the believers from fighting, for Allah is Powerful, Almighty.

26. He brought down from their fortresses those People of the Book who supported them, and cast terror into their hearts. You killed some, and took others captive.

27. He made you inherit their land, their homes, their wealth, and even lands you had never set foot on. Allah has power over all things.

28. O Prophet, say to your wives: "If you desire the life of this world and its beauty, then come — I will provide for you, and release you graciously."

29. But if you desire Allah, His Messenger, and the Home of the Hereafter, then surely Allah has prepared a magnificent reward for those among you who do good."

30. O wives of the Prophet, whoever among you commits clear immorality, her punishment will be doubled — and that is easy for Allah.

31. But whoever among you remains devoted to Allah and His Messenger, and does righteous deeds, We will grant her a double reward, and We have prepared for her an honorable provision.

32. O wives of the Prophet, you are not like any other women. If you are mindful of Allah, then do not speak softly, lest someone with sickness in his heart becomes tempted — but speak honorably.

33. Remain in your homes, and do not display yourselves as women did in the former days of ignorance. Establish prayer, give charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah only wishes to remove all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you completely.

34. And remember what is recited in your homes of Allah's revelations and wisdom. Allah is Most Subtle, All-Aware.

35. Surely, for Muslim men and women, believing men and women, devout men and women, truthful men and women, patient men and women, humble men and women, charitable men and women, fasting men and women, men and women who guard their chastity, and men and women who remember Allah often — Allah has prepared forgiveness and a magnificent reward.

36. It is not fitting for any believing man or woman, once Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, to have any choice in their own affairs. Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has clearly gone astray.

37. Remember when you said to the one whom Allah had favored, and whom you had favored, "Keep your wife, and fear Allah," while you concealed within yourself what Allah would soon reveal, fearing the people — though Allah alone deserves your fear. Then, when Zayd had ended his marriage with her, We gave her to you in marriage, so that there would be no blame upon believers for marrying the former wives of their adopted sons, after their marriages had ended. And Allah's command is always fulfilled.

38. There is no blame upon the Prophet for what Allah has ordained for him. This is Allah's way with those who passed before — and Allah's command is a decree firmly determined.

39. Those who deliver Allah's messages, fear Him alone, and fear no one else but Allah. And Allah is sufficient as a Reckoner.

40. Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is Allah's Messenger, and the Seal of the Prophets. And Allah has full knowledge of all things.

41. O you who believe, remember Allah abundantly.

42. And glorify Him morning and evening.

43. It is He Who reaches out to you, as do His angels, to bring you out of darkness into the light. And He is ever Merciful to the believers.

44. Their greeting on the Day they meet Him will be, "Peace!" And He has prepared for them a generous reward.

45. O Prophet, truly We have sent you as a witness, a bearer of good news, and a warner.

46. And as one who invites to Allah by His permission, and as a radiant lamp.

47. So give good news to the believers that they will receive great bounty from Allah.

48. And do not yield to the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Ignore their harm, and place your trust in Allah — for Allah alone is sufficient as a Guardian.

49. Believers, if you marry believing women, and then divorce them before you have touched them, you have no right to require them to observe any waiting period. Provide for them generously, and let them go graciously.

50. Prophet, We have made lawful for you your wives whose bridal gifts you have given, and those whom your right hand possesses from what Allah has granted you, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncles and aunts who migrated with you, and a believing woman who offered herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet wishes to marry her — this privilege is exclusively for you, not for other believers. We know well what We have ordained for them regarding their wives and dependents, so that there may be no difficulty for you. Allah is always Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

51. You may postpone the company of any of them you wish, and receive any of them you wish. And if you desire any whom you had previously set aside, there is no blame upon you. This is more suitable to comfort their hearts, prevent their sadness, and ensure they are content with whatever you give them. Allah knows what is in your hearts, and Allah is always All-Knowing, Most Forbearing.

52. It is not lawful for you to marry other women after this, nor to exchange them for other wives, even if their beauty pleases you, except those dependents already under your care. Allah is ever watchful over all things.

53. Believers, do not enter the Prophet's houses unless you are invited for a meal, and do not arrive early waiting for it to be prepared. But when you are invited, enter; and once you have eaten, leave without lingering for conversation. Such behavior troubles the Prophet, yet he is too shy to tell you. But Allah is never shy of the truth. And when you ask his wives for something, ask them from behind a screen. This is purer for your hearts and theirs. You must never offend Allah's Messenger, nor ever marry his wives after him. Truly, that would be a grave offense in the sight of Allah.

54. Whether you reveal something or conceal it, Allah is fully aware of all things.

55. There is no blame upon them regarding their fathers, their sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their fellow women, or those dependents under their care. Yet remain mindful of Allah, for Allah is witness over all things.

56. Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. Believers, send your blessings upon him, and greet him with greetings of peace.

57. Those who offend Allah and His Messenger, are cursed by Allah in this world and the Hereafter, and He has prepared for them a humiliating punishment.

58. And those who unjustly harm believing men and women, for deeds they did not commit, have certainly burdened themselves with slander and clear sin.

59. Prophet, tell your wives, your daughters, and the believing women, to draw their cloaks closely around themselves. This makes it more likely that they will be recognized and not harmed. Allah is always forgiving, most merciful.

60. If the hypocrites, those with sickness in their hearts, and those who spread rumors in the city do not stop, We will surely incite you against them. Then they will not remain your neighbors there for long.

61. They are cursed. wherever they are found, they will be seized and utterly slain.

62. This has always been Allah's way with those who lived before, and you will never find any change in Allah's way.

63. People ask you about the Hour. Say, "Its knowledge rests only with Allah. How could you know? Perhaps the Hour is near."

64. Allah has cursed the disbelievers, and has prepared for them a blazing Fire.

65. Where they will remain forever, finding neither protector nor helper.

66. On the Day their faces are turned in the Fire, they will say, "If only we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger!"

67. And they will say, "Our Lord, we obeyed our leaders and our great ones, and they led us astray from the path.

68. Our Lord, give them double punishment, and curse them with a mighty curse!"

69. Believers, do not be like those who hurt Moses, but Allah cleared him of what they said. He was honored in Allah's sight.

70. Believers, be mindful of Allah, and speak words that are true and right.

71. He will set your deeds right for you, and forgive your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, has truly achieved a great triumph.

72. We offered the Trust to the heavens, the earth, and the mountains, but they refused to bear it, and were afraid of it. Yet the human being took it on — he was truly unjust and ignorant.

73. So that Allah may punish hypocritical men and women, and idolatrous men and women, and so that Allah may turn in mercy toward believing men and women. Allah is always forgiving, most merciful.
