In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
1. The people's reckoning draws near, yet they turn away, heedless and distracted.
2. Whenever a fresh reminder comes to them from their Lord, they listen to it while they are playing.
3. With their hearts distracted, those who do wrong whisper secretly, "Isn't he just a human being like yourselves? Will you follow magic knowingly?"
4. He said, "My Lord knows every word spoken in the heavens and the earth. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."
5. Yet they say, "These are confused dreams," or "He made it up," or "He is a poet. Let him bring us a sign like those sent to earlier peoples."
6. Not a single town We destroyed before them ever believed — will these then believe?
7. Before you, We sent only men whom We inspired. So ask the people of knowledge, if you do not know.
8. We did not make them bodies that would not eat food, and they were not immortal.
9. Then We fulfilled Our promise to them, saving them and whomever We willed, and destroying those who exceeded all bounds.
10. We have certainly sent down to you a Book containing your reminder — will you not then understand?
11. How many unjust towns have We utterly destroyed, raising up other peoples after them!
12. When they sensed Our punishment approaching, they fled swiftly from it.
13. "Do not run away! Return to your comforts and homes, so you may be questioned."
14. They cried out, "Woe to us! Truly, we were wrongdoers!"
15. They continued crying out, until We made them mowed down, extinguished.
16. We did not create the heavens and the earth and everything between, them as mere play.
17. Had We wished for amusement, We would have found it within Ourselves — if ever We were to do so.
18. Rather, We hurl the truth against falsehood, and it crushes it, and falsehood vanishes. Woe to you for what you claim!
19. To Him belongs everyone in the heavens and the earth. Those near Him are never too proud to worship Him, nor do they ever tire.
20. They glorify Him tirelessly, night and day.
21. Or have they taken gods from the earth, who can raise the dead?
22. Had there been other gods besides Allah in the heavens and the earth, both realms would have fallen into ruin. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the Throne, far above what they claim!
23. He is not questioned about what He does, but they will surely be questioned.
24. Or have they taken other gods besides Him? Say, "Bring your proof! This is the message of those with me, and those before me." Yet most of them do not know the truth, so they turn away.
25. We never sent any messenger before you, without revealing to him, "There is no god but Me, so worship Me alone."
26. They say, "The Most Merciful has taken a child." Glory be to Him! Rather, they are honored servants.
27. They never speak ahead of Him, and they act only by His command.
28. He knows what lies before them, and what lies behind them. They intercede only for those whom He approves, and they tremble in awe of Him.
29. If any of them were to say, "I am a god besides Him," We would repay him with Hell. This is how We repay the wrongdoers.
30. Do those who disbelieve not see that the heavens and the earth were once joined together, then We split them apart? And We made every living thing from water. Will they still not believe?
31. And We placed firm mountains upon the earth, so it would not shake beneath them, and made wide pathways through it, so they might find their way.
32. And We made the sky a protected canopy, yet they turn away from its signs.
33. He is the One Who created the night and the day, the sun and the moon — each floating smoothly in its own orbit.
34. We never granted immortality to any human being before you. So if you die, would they live forever?
35. Every soul will taste death. We test you with hardship and ease, as a trial, and to Us you will all return.
36. When those who deny see you, they only mock you, saying, "Is this the one who speaks against your gods?" Yet they themselves reject any mention of the Most Merciful.
37. The human being was created impatient. Soon I will show you My signs, so do not rush Me.
38. They say, "When will this promise come true, if you are telling the truth?"
39. If only those who disbelieve knew the time, when they will not be able to keep the Fire away from their faces, or their backs, nor will they be helped.
40. Rather, it will come upon them suddenly, stunning them completely. They will neither be able to turn it away, nor will they be given any delay.
41. Messengers before you were mocked as well, but the very punishment they ridiculed surrounded those who mocked them.
42. Say, "Who can protect you, by night or by day, from the Most Merciful?" Yet they stubbornly turn away from the remembrance of their Lord.
43. Or do they have gods besides Us, who can shield them? They cannot even help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us.
44. Rather, We allowed these people and their ancestors to enjoy life, until their lives grew long. Do they not see how We diminish the land from its edges? Are they then the ones who will prevail?
45. Say, "I only warn you through revelation." But the deaf cannot hear the call when they are warned.
46. Even if a mere breath of your Lord's punishment touched them, they would surely cry out, "How terrible for us! Truly, we were wrongdoers!"
47. We will set up the scales of justice on the Day of Resurrection, and no soul will be wronged in the slightest. Even if it is the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as Reckoners.
48. Certainly, We gave Moses and Aaron the Criterion, a light, and a reminder for those mindful of Allah.
49. Those who fear their Lord in the unseen, and who tremble at the thought of the Hour.
50. And this is a blessed reminder that We have sent down — will you then deny it?
51. Indeed, We granted Abraham guidance long before, and We knew him well.
52. When he said to his father and his people, "What are these statues you cling to in devotion?"
53. They replied, "We found our forefathers worshiping them."
54. He said, "Truly, you and your forefathers have been clearly misguided."
55. They asked, "Have you brought us the truth, or are you just playing around?"
56. He answered, "Rather, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who originated them, and I bear witness to that."
57. "And by Allah, I will surely devise a plan against your idols, after you have turned your backs."
58. So he smashed them into pieces, except for the largest one, so that they might return to it.
59. They exclaimed, "Who did this to our gods? He must be a wrongdoer!"
60. Some said, "We heard a young man speaking against them — he is called Abraham."
61. They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, so that they may bear witness."
62. They asked, "Was it you, Abraham, who did this to our gods?"
63. He replied, "Rather, this largest one did it. Ask them, if they can speak."
64. So they turned inward, saying to themselves, "Truly, you yourselves are the wrongdoers."
65. But then they reversed themselves, saying, "You know very well these idols cannot speak!"
66. Abraham said, "Then do you worship instead of Allah, something that can neither benefit, nor harm you at all?"
67. "Shame on you, and on whatever you worship besides Allah. Will you not reason?"
68. They shouted, "Burn him, and defend your gods, if you are going to act!"
69. We said, "O fire, be cool and safe for Abraham!"
70. They intended harm against him, but We made them the greatest losers.
71. And We rescued him and Lot, bringing them to the land which We blessed for all people.
72. And We granted him Isaac, and Jacob as an additional gift — and We made each of them righteous.
73. And We made them leaders, guiding by Our command, and inspired them to do good deeds, establish prayer, and give charity — and they were devoted worshipers of Us.
74. And to Lot We gave wisdom and knowledge, and We saved him from the town that practiced vile deeds. They were wicked and rebellious people.
75. And We admitted him into Our mercy — he was indeed among the righteous.
76. And Noah, when he called out long before — We answered him, saving him and his family from the great distress.
77. And We supported him against the people who rejected Our signs. They were wicked people, so We drowned them all.
78. And remember David and Solomon, when they judged concerning the field into which some people's sheep had wandered and grazed by night. We witnessed their judgment.
79. We gave Solomon insight into the case, yet We granted both of them wisdom and knowledge. And We made the mountains and birds join David in glorifying Our praises — We were the Ones Who did this.
80. We taught him the craft of making armor, to protect you from your violence. Will you then be grateful?
81. And to Solomon, We subjected the fierce wind, blowing swiftly by his command toward the land We had blessed. We have full knowledge of everything.
82. And among the devils were those who dived into the sea for him, and performed other tasks as well. We kept watch over them.
83. And remember Job, when he cried out to his Lord, "Suffering has truly afflicted me, but You are the Most Merciful of all who show mercy!"
84. So We answered him, removed his suffering, restored his family to him, and doubled their number — as a mercy from Us, and a reminder for all who worship.
85. And remember Ishmael, Idris, and Dhul-Kifl — each one was among the patient.
86. We admitted them into Our mercy; truly, they were among the righteous.
87. And remember the man of the whale, when he left in anger, he thought We would not constrain him. Then he cried out from the depths of darkness, "There is no god but You! Glory be to You! I have done wrong!"
88. So We answered him, and rescued him from distress. This is how We save the believers.
89. And remember Zachariah, when he called out to his Lord, "My Lord, do not leave me alone, though You are the best of inheritors."
90. So We answered him, granted him John, and healed his wife for him. They used to hasten toward good deeds, calling upon Us with hope and awe, and they were humbly devoted to Us.
91. And remember the one who guarded her chastity — We breathed into her of Our spirit, and We made her and her son a sign for all people.
92. Truly, this community of yours is one community, and I am your Lord, so worship Me alone.
93. Yet they divided themselves into factions. All will return to Us.
94. Whoever does righteous deeds while believing, their efforts will never go unappreciated, for We are recording them.
95. It is forbidden for a town We have destroyed, that they will return.
96. Until Gog and Magog are let loose, rushing down from every height.
97. And the true promise draws near. Then, suddenly, the eyes of those who disbelieved will stare in horror, crying, "Woe to us! We were heedless of this — no, we were truly wrongdoers!"
98. Certainly, you and whatever you worship besides Allah will be fuel for Hell — you will surely enter it.
99. If these had truly been gods, they would not have entered it. Yet all will remain there forever.
100. There they will groan in anguish, unable to hear anything else.
101. But those for whom We have already decreed the best reward — they will be kept far away from it.
102. They will not even hear its faintest sound, and they will remain forever in all that their souls desire.
103. The Great Terror will not grieve them, and the angels will greet them, saying, "This is your Day, the one you were promised!"
104. On that Day, We will roll up the heavens, like a scroll rolled up for records. Just as We began the first creation, We will repeat it — a promise binding upon Us. Surely, We will fulfill it.
105. We have already written in the Psalms, after the earlier revelation, that My righteous servants will inherit the earth.
106. Surely, in this is a clear message for people devoted to worship.
107. We have sent you only as a mercy to the worlds.
108. Say, "It has been revealed to me that your God is only One God. Will you then submit?"
109. But if they turn away, say, "I have warned you all equally. I do not know whether what you are promised is near, or far."
110. He knows what is openly said, and He knows what you conceal.
111. Nor do I know — perhaps it is a test for you, and an enjoyment for a while.
112. He said, "My Lord, judge with truth. Our Lord is the Most Compassionate, whose help is sought against all that you claim."
