In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
1. Alif. Lam. Meem.
2. This is the Book, without doubt, a guidance for those mindful of Allah.
3. Those who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and give from what We have provided them.
4. And those who believe in what was revealed to you, and what was revealed before you, and who have firm faith in the Hereafter.
5. They are truly guided by their Lord, and they are the ones who will succeed.
6. Certainly, those who disbelieve — it makes no difference whether you warn them or not — they will not believe.
7. Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing, and placed a veil over their eyes. They will suffer a tremendous punishment.
8. Among the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," yet they do not truly believe.
9. They try to deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive no one except themselves, though they do not realize it.
10. In their hearts is a sickness, so Allah increases their sickness. They will have a painful punishment, because they used to lie.
11. When they are told, "Do not spread corruption on earth," they reply, "We are only setting things right."
12. Truly, they themselves are the corruptors, but they do not realize it.
13. When they are told, "Believe as other people have believed," they respond, "Should we believe as the fools believe?" Truly, they themselves are the fools, but they do not know it.
14. When they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe," but when alone with their devils, they say, "We are really with you; we were only mocking."
15. Allah mocks them, letting them persist blindly in their rebellion.
16. They are the ones who traded guidance for misguidance. Their trade brought them no profit, nor were they rightly guided.
17. Their example is like someone who lights a fire; when it illuminates all around him, Allah takes away their light, leaving them in utter darkness, unable to see.
18. Deaf, mute, and blind — so they will not return.
19. Or like a storm cloud from the sky, filled with darkness, thunder, and lightning. They press their fingers into their ears against the thunderclaps, terrified of death. Yet Allah surrounds the disbelievers completely.
20. The lightning nearly snatches away their sight. Whenever it flashes, they walk forward in its light, but when darkness covers them, they stand still. If Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and sight. Truly, Allah has power over all things.
21. O people, worship your Lord, Who created you and those before you, so that you may become mindful of Allah.
22. He made the earth a resting place for you, and the sky a canopy, and sent down water from the sky, bringing forth fruits as provision for you. So do not set up rivals to Allah, while you know.
23. If you are in doubt about what We have revealed to Our servant, then produce even one chapter like it, and call upon your witnesses apart from Allah, if you are truthful.
24. But if you cannot — and you will never be able to — then beware of the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.
25. Give good news to those who believe and do righteous deeds: they will have Gardens beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with fruit from there, they will say, "This is what we were given before," for they will be given something similar. They will have pure spouses there, and they will remain there forever.
26. Allah does not shy away from giving an example — even of a mosquito or something smaller. Those who believe know it is the truth from their Lord, while those who disbelieve say, "What does Allah mean by this example?" He causes many to stray by it, and guides many by it. But He only causes the rebellious to stray.
27. Those who break Allah's covenant after it has been confirmed, sever what Allah has commanded to be joined, and spread corruption on earth. They are the true losers.
28. How can you deny Allah, when you were lifeless, and He gave you life? Then He will cause you to die, then bring you back to life, and then you will return to Him.
29. He is the One Who created everything on earth for you, then turned toward the heaven, shaping it into seven heavens. And He has perfect knowledge of all things.
30. When your Lord said to the angels, "I will place a successor on earth," they asked, "Will You place there someone who will spread corruption, and shed blood, while we glorify Your praise and sanctify You?" He replied, "I know what you do not know."
31. And He taught Adam the names of all things, then presented them to the angels, saying, "Tell Me the names of these, if you are truthful."
32. They said, "Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Truly, You alone are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise."
33. He said, "Adam, inform them of their names." When Adam informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you conceal?"
34. And when We said to the angels, "Bow down before Adam," they all bowed, except Iblis. He refused, became arrogant, and was among the unbelievers.
35. And We said, "Adam, dwell with your wife in Paradise, and eat freely from wherever you wish, but do not approach this tree, or else you will both become wrongdoers."
36. But Satan caused them both to slip from it, removing them from the state they had been in. And We said, "Go down, as enemies to one another. On earth, you will have a dwelling place and provision for a time."
37. Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance. Truly, He alone is the Ever-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
38. We said, "Go down from here, all of you. Whenever guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will have no fear, nor will they grieve."
39. But those who disbelieve and deny Our revelations — they are the people of the Fire, and there they will remain forever.
40. O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I bestowed upon you. Fulfill your promise to Me, and I will fulfill My promise to you — and fear Me alone.
41. Believe in what I have revealed, confirming what is already with you. Do not be the first to reject it, nor trade My revelations for a small price — and be mindful of Me alone.
42. Do not mix truth with falsehood, nor conceal the truth knowingly.
43. Establish prayer, give charity, and bow down with those who bow.
44. Do you command people to righteousness, yet forget yourselves, even though you recite the Scripture? Will you not use your reason?
45. Seek help through patience and prayer. Truly, it is difficult except for the humble.
46. Those who think they will meet their Lord, and return to Him.
47. O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I bestowed upon you, and that I favored you above all others.
48. Guard yourselves against a Day when no soul will avail another in any way, nor will intercession be accepted from it, nor ransom taken, nor will they be helped.
49. And remember when We saved you from Pharaoh's people, who subjected you to terrible torment, slaughtering your sons, and sparing your women. In this was a great trial from your Lord.
50. And remember when We parted the sea for you, rescuing you and drowning Pharaoh's people, before your very eyes.
51. And remember when We appointed forty nights for Moses, yet you took the calf for worship after him, acting unjustly.
52. Even then, We pardoned you afterward, so that you might be grateful.
53. And remember when We gave Moses the Scripture and the Criterion, so that you might be guided.
54. And when Moses said to his people, "My people, you have wronged yourselves by taking the calf for worship. Turn in repentance to your Creator, and slay yourselves. That is better for you in the sight of your Creator." Then He accepted your repentance — truly, He is the Ever-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
55. And remember when you said, "Moses, we will never believe you, until we see Allah openly." Then the thunderbolt struck you while you watched.
56. Then We raised you back to life after your death, so that you might be grateful.
57. And We shaded you with clouds, and sent down to you manna and quails, saying, "Eat from the good things We have provided for you." They did not wrong Us, but they were only wronging themselves.
58. And remember when We said, "Enter this town, and eat freely from wherever you wish. Enter the gate bowing down, saying, 'Pardon,' and We will forgive your sins, and increase the reward of those who do good."
59. But those who did wrong changed the words they were told to say, so We sent down upon the wrongdoers a punishment from heaven, because of their disobedience.
60. And remember when Moses prayed for water for his people, and We said, "Strike the rock with your staff." Then twelve springs gushed forth from it, and each tribe knew its drinking place. "Eat and drink from Allah's provision, and do not spread corruption on earth."
61. And remember when you said, "Moses, we cannot endure just one kind of food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its herbs, cucumbers, garlic, lentils, and onions." He replied, "Would you exchange what is better for what is inferior? Go down to any town, and you will find what you have asked for." Humiliation and misery were stamped upon them, and they incurred Allah's wrath. That was because they rejected Allah's revelations, and unjustly killed the prophets. That was because they disobeyed and persistently transgressed.
62. Certainly, those who believe, and those who are Jews, Christians, and Sabians — whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and does righteous deeds — they will have their reward with their Lord. They will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
63. And remember when We took your covenant, and raised the mountain above you, saying, "Hold firmly to what We have given you, and remember what is in it, so that you may become mindful of Allah."
64. Yet even after that, you turned away. Had it not been for Allah's grace and mercy upon you, you would surely have been among the losers.
65. Certainly, you knew about those among you who violated the Sabbath. So We said to them, "Be apes, outcast!"
66. We made their fate an example for those present, and those who would come after them, and a lesson for those mindful of Allah.
67. And remember when Moses said to his people, "Allah commands you to sacrifice a cow." They replied, "Are you mocking us?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant."
68. They said, "Ask your Lord to clarify for us what kind of cow it should be." He answered, "He says it should be a cow neither old nor young, but of middle age between the two. Now do as you are commanded."
69. They said, "Ask your Lord to clarify for us its color." He replied, "He says it should be a bright yellow cow, vibrant in color, pleasing to all who see it."
70. They said, "Ask your Lord to clarify exactly what kind of cow it is, for cows seem alike to us. Surely, if Allah wills, we will be guided."
71. He answered, "He says it is a cow neither trained to plow the earth, nor to water the fields, healthy and flawless, without any blemish." They said, "Now you have brought the truth." So they slaughtered it, though they nearly failed to do so.
72. And remember when you killed a human being, and argued among yourselves about it — but Allah was to bring forth what you were hiding.
73. So We said, "Strike him with a part of it." This is how Allah brings the dead to life, and shows you His signs, so that you may understand.
74. Yet even after all this, your hearts hardened — becoming like stones, or even harder. For indeed, there are stones from which rivers burst forth, and stones that split open so water flows from them, and stones that fall down out of reverence for Allah. Allah is never unaware of what you do.
75. Do you still hope they will believe you, when some among them used to hear Allah's words, then deliberately distort them, after fully understanding their meaning?
76. When they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe," but when alone with each other, they say, "Why do you tell them what Allah has revealed to you, so that they may use it as an argument against you before your Lord? Don't you have any sense?"
77. Do they not realize that Allah knows everything they conceal, and everything they reveal?
78. Among them are unlettered people who know nothing of the Scripture, except wishful thinking; they merely guess.
79. So woe to those who write the Scripture with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allah," to trade it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn.
80. They say, "The Fire will only touch us for a few days." Say, "Have you taken a promise from Allah? For Allah never breaks His promise. Or are you saying about Allah things you do not know?"
81. Truly, whoever commits evil, and is surrounded by their sins — those are the companions of the Fire; they will remain there forever.
82. But those who believe and do righteous deeds — those are the companions of Paradise; they will remain there forever.
83. Remember when We took a covenant from the Children of Israel: "Worship none but Allah; show kindness to parents, relatives, orphans, and the needy; speak kindly to people; establish prayer and give charity." Yet afterward, you turned away — except for a few of you — and you stubbornly refused.
84. And remember when We took your covenant: "Do not shed each other's blood, or drive one another from your homes." You acknowledged this, and bore witness.
85. Yet here you are, killing one another, and driving some of your own people from their homes, supporting each other in sin and aggression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, though it was forbidden for you to expel them in the first place. Do you believe in part of the Scripture, and reject another part? What is the reward for those among you who do this, except disgrace in this worldly life? And on the Day of Resurrection, they will be returned to the harshest punishment. Allah is never unaware of what you do.
86. Those are the ones who trade the Hereafter for this worldly life. Their punishment will not be lightened, nor will they be helped.
87. We gave Moses the Scripture, and We sent after him messengers. We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs, and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Yet whenever a messenger came to you with something your souls disliked, you became arrogant — rejecting some messengers, and killing others.
88. They say, "Our hearts are sealed." Rather, Allah has cursed them for their disbelief — how little they believe!
89. And when a Book from Allah came to them, confirming what they already had — though before this they used to pray for victory over those who disbelieved — yet when what they recognized came to them, they rejected it. So Allah's curse is upon those who deny the truth.
90. How wretched is the price for which they sold their own souls — rejecting what Allah revealed, out of envy that Allah would send down His grace upon whomever He wills among His servants. Thus they earned wrath upon wrath. And for those who deny the truth, there is a humiliating punishment.
91. When they are told, "Believe in what Allah has revealed," they reply, "We believe only in what was revealed to us," and they reject everything beyond it — even though it is the truth, confirming what they already have. Say, "Then why did you kill Allah's prophets before, if you were truly believers?"
92. Moses came to you with clear proofs, yet afterward you took the calf for worship, becoming wrongdoers.
93. And remember when We took your covenant, and raised the mountain above you, saying, "Hold firmly to what We have given you, and listen." They said, "We hear, and we disobey." Their hearts were filled with love for the calf, because of their disbelief. Say, "How evil is what your faith commands you, if you truly are believers!"
94. Say, "If the home of the Hereafter with Allah is exclusively yours, apart from all other people, then wish for death, if you are truthful."
95. But they will never wish for it, because of what their own hands have sent ahead. And Allah knows well those who do wrong.
96. You will surely find them the most eager of all people for life, even more than those who associate others with Allah. Each one of them wishes he could live a thousand years. Yet even such a long life would not save him from punishment. And Allah sees clearly all that they do.
97. Say, "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel — he is the one who brought it down upon your heart, by Allah's permission, confirming what came before it, and as guidance and joyful news for the believers."
98. Whoever is an enemy to Allah, His angels, His messengers, Gabriel, and Michael — then surely, Allah is an enemy to those who deny the truth.
99. We have certainly sent down to you clear revelations, and no one rejects them except those who defiantly disobey.
100. Is it not so that whenever they make a promise, a group among them casts it aside? In fact, most of them do not believe.
101. And when a Messenger from Allah came to them, confirming what they already had, some of those who were given the Scripture, threw Allah's Book behind their backs, as if they did not know.
102. They followed what the devils recited during Solomon's reign. Solomon did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic, and what was revealed to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. Yet these two never taught anyone without first saying, "We are only a test, so do not disbelieve." Still, people learned from them how to separate a man from his wife. But they could not harm anyone with it except by Allah's permission. They learned what harmed them and brought them no benefit. They certainly knew that whoever acquired it would have no share in the Hereafter. Miserable indeed was the price for which they sold their souls — if only they knew!
103. If only they had believed and been mindful of Allah, a reward from Allah would have been far better — if only they knew!
104. O you who believe, do not say "Ra'ina," but say "Unzurna," and listen. For the disbelievers, there will be a painful punishment.
105. Neither the disbelievers among the People of the Scripture, nor the idolaters, wish that any good should come down to you from your Lord. But Allah chooses for His mercy whomever He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
106. Whenever We replace a verse, or cause it to be forgotten, We bring one better than it, or equal to it. Do you not know that Allah has power over all things?
107. Do you not know, that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; you have no protector or helper besides Allah?
108. Or do you intend to question your Messenger, as Moses was questioned before? Whoever exchanges belief for disbelief, has surely strayed from the right path.
109. Many among the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief, after you have believed, out of envy within themselves, even after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook, until Allah brings about His command. Truly, Allah has power over all things.
110. Establish prayer, and give charity. Whatever good you send ahead for yourselves, you will find it with Allah. Truly, Allah sees everything you do.
111. They say, "No one will enter Paradise, unless he is a Jew or a Christian." These are merely their wishes. Say, "Bring your proof, if you are truthful."
112. Rather, whoever submits himself to Allah, and does good, will have his reward with his Lord. They will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
113. The Jews say, "The Christians have no basis," and the Christians say, "The Jews have no basis," though they both recite the Scripture. Those who have no knowledge speak similarly. Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection, regarding their disputes.
114. Who could be more unjust, than those who prevent Allah's name from being mentioned in His places of worship, and strive to ruin them? Such people should enter them only in fear. They will suffer disgrace in this world, and a tremendous punishment in the Hereafter.
115. To Allah belong the east and the west — wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah. Truly, Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
116. They say, "Allah has taken a son." Glory be to Him! Rather, everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him; all are obedient to Him.
117. He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decrees a matter, He merely says to it, "Be," and it is.
118. Those without knowledge say, "Why does Allah not speak to us directly, or send us a sign?" Those before them spoke similarly — their hearts resemble one another. We have made the signs clear for people who have certainty.
119. We have sent you with the truth — as a bearer of good news, and a warner. You will not be questioned about the inhabitants of Hellfire.
120. Neither the Jews nor the Christians will ever be pleased with you, until you follow their religion. Say, "Allah's guidance is the true guidance." If you were to follow their desires, after the knowledge that has come to you, you would have neither protector nor helper against Allah.
121. Those to whom We have given the Scripture, who recite it as it deserves to be recited — they are the ones who truly believe in it. As for those who deny it, they are the losers.
122. O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I bestowed upon you, and that I favored you above all others.
123. And fear a Day when no soul will avail another in any way, nor will any ransom be accepted from it, nor will intercession benefit it, nor will they be helped.
124. And remember when Abraham was tested by his Lord, with certain commands, and he fulfilled them completely. Allah said, "I will make you a leader for all people." Abraham asked, "And from my descendants as well?" Allah replied, "My promise does not extend to those who do wrong."
125. And remember when We made the House a place of gathering and safety for people, saying, "Take the standing place of Abraham as a place of prayer." And We commanded Abraham and Ishmael, "Purify My House for those who circle it, those who stay there in devotion, and those who bow and prostrate."
126. And remember when Abraham prayed, "My Lord, make this land secure, and provide its people with fruits — those among them who believe in Allah and the Last Day." Allah replied, "As for those who disbelieve, I will grant them enjoyment for a short while, then force them into the punishment of the Fire. What a terrible destination!"
127. And remember when Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House, praying: "Our Lord, accept this from us. Truly, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."
128. "Our Lord, make us submitting to You, and from our descendants, raise a community submitting to You. Show us our rites of worship, and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the Ever-Accepting of repentance, the Most Merciful."
129. "Our Lord, send among them a messenger from themselves, who will recite Your revelations to them, teach them the Scripture and wisdom, and purify them. Truly, You are the Almighty, the All-Wise."
130. Who would turn away from the faith of Abraham, except someone who fools himself? Certainly, We chose him in this world, and in the Hereafter, he will surely be among the righteous.
131. When his Lord said to him, "Submit," he replied, "I submit myself to the Lord of all worlds."
132. Abraham instructed his children in this, so did Jacob, saying, "My children, Allah has chosen this faith for you, so do not die except in submission to Him."
133. Were you present when death approached Jacob, and he asked his children, "Whom will you worship after me?" They replied, "We will worship your God and the God of your forefathers — Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac — the One God. And to Him we submit."
134. That was a community that has passed away. They will have what they earned, and you will have what you earn. You will not be questioned about what they used to do.
135. They say, "Become Jews or Christians, and you will be rightly guided." Say, "Rather, we follow the faith of Abraham, who was devoted purely to Allah — and he was never among those who worshiped others beside Him."
136. Say, "We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to all the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him alone we submit."
137. If they believe as you believe, then they are truly guided. But if they turn away, they are only stubbornly opposed. Allah will surely protect you from them, for He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
138. The coloring of Allah — and who could give a better color than Allah? And we are worshipers of Him.
139. Say, "Do you argue with us about Allah, when He is our Lord and your Lord? We have our deeds, and you have yours — and we are sincerely devoted to Him."
140. Or do you claim that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes were Jews or Christians? Say, "Do you know better, or does Allah?" Who could be more unjust than someone who conceals a testimony he has from Allah? Allah is never unaware of what you do.
141. That was a community that has passed away. They will have what they earned, and you will have what you earn. You will not be questioned about what they used to do.
142. The foolish among the people will soon say, "What has turned them away from the prayer direction they used to face?" Say, "To Allah belong the east and the west. He guides whomever He wills to a straight path."
143. Thus We have made you a balanced community, so that you may bear witness over humanity, and the Messenger may bear witness over you. We only appointed the direction you previously faced, so that We may know who follows the Messenger, from those who turn back on their heels. It was indeed difficult, except for those whom Allah guided. Allah would never let your faith go to waste — for Allah is truly Kind and Merciful to all people.
144. We have certainly seen you turning your face toward heaven. Now We will surely turn you toward a prayer direction that pleases you. So turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque — and wherever you may be, turn your faces toward it. Those who were given the Scripture know well, that this is the truth from their Lord. Allah is never unaware of what they do.
145. Even if you brought every proof to those who were given the Scripture, they would never follow your prayer direction. Nor will you ever follow theirs, nor will any of them follow the direction of another. If you were to follow their desires, after the knowledge that has come to you, you would surely be among the wrongdoers.
146. Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize him as clearly as they recognize their own children. Yet a group among them knowingly conceals the truth.
147. The truth is from your Lord, so never be among those who doubt.
148. Everyone has a direction toward which they turn, so strive together in doing good. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you all together. Truly, Allah has power over everything.
149. From wherever you set out, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. This is surely the truth from your Lord, and Allah is never unaware of what you do.
150. From wherever you set out, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. And wherever you may be, turn your faces toward it, so that people will have no argument against you — except those among them who do wrong. Do not fear them, but fear Me, so that I may complete My favor upon you, and so that you may be rightly guided.
151. Just as We sent among you a Messenger from yourselves, reciting to you Our verses, purifying you, teaching you the Scripture and wisdom, and teaching you what you did not know.
152. So remember Me, and I will remember you. Be grateful to Me, and do not be ungrateful.
153. O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Surely, Allah is with those who are patient.
154. Do not say of those who are killed in Allah's cause, "They are dead." Rather, they are alive, but you do not perceive it.
155. We will certainly test you with some fear and hunger, and loss of wealth, lives, and fruits — but give good news to those who patiently endure.
156. Those who, when struck by hardship, say, "We belong to Allah, and to Him we will return."
157. They are the ones upon whom are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and they are the rightly guided.
158. Safa and Marwah are among the sacred symbols of Allah. Whoever makes the pilgrimage to the House, or performs the lesser pilgrimage, commits no wrong by walking between them. And whoever willingly does good — Allah is truly Appreciative, All-Knowing.
159. Certainly, those who conceal the clear proofs and guidance We revealed, after We made them clear for the people in the Scripture — Allah curses them, and all who curse will curse them too.
160. Except those who repent, make amends, and openly declare the truth — these I will forgive, for I am the Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
161. Surely, those who disbelieve and die as disbelievers — upon them is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people combined.
162. They will remain under it forever; their punishment will not be eased, nor will they be granted respite.
163. Your God is one God. There is no god but Him — the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
164. Truly, in the creation of the heavens and the earth; the alternation of night and day; the ships sailing the seas for the benefit of people; the rain Allah sends down from the sky, reviving the earth after its death, and scattering all kinds of creatures upon it; the shifting of the winds; and the clouds drifting between heaven and earth — there are signs for people who understand.
165. Yet among the people are those who set up rivals to Allah, loving them as they should love Allah. But those who believe have far greater love for Allah. If only the wrongdoers could see — when they witness the punishment — that all power belongs entirely to Allah, and that Allah is severe in punishment.
166. When those who were followed disown their followers, and they all see the punishment, and all bonds between them are severed.
167. Then the followers will say, "If only we had another chance, we would disown them, just as they have disowned us." Thus Allah will show them their deeds as regrets for them, and they will never escape the Fire.
168. O people, eat from what is lawful and good on the earth, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. He is clearly your enemy.
169. He only commands you to evil and indecency, and to say about Allah what you do not know.
170. When they are told, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "No, we follow what we found our ancestors doing." Even if their ancestors understood nothing and were not guided?
171. The disbelievers are likened to cattle who only hear sounds and shouts, but do not comprehend — deaf, dumb, and blind, they understand nothing.
172. O you who believe, eat from the good things We have provided for you, and be grateful to Allah, if it is truly Him you worship.
173. He has only forbidden you carrion, blood, pork, and anything slaughtered in the name of other than Allah. But whoever is forced by necessity, neither desiring nor exceeding limits, commits no sin. Allah is truly Forgiving, Merciful.
174. Those who conceal what Allah has revealed of the Scripture, trading it for a small price — they consume nothing but fire into their bellies. Allah will neither speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor purify them, and theirs will be a painful punishment.
175. They are the ones who trade guidance for misguidance, and forgiveness for punishment. How bold they are in facing the Fire!
176. That is because Allah has sent down the Scripture with truth, and those who differ about the Scripture are deeply divided.
177. Righteousness is not turning your faces toward the east or the west. Rather, righteousness is believing in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets; giving wealth, despite loving it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, travelers, beggars, and to free captives; establishing prayer and giving charity; keeping promises when made; and being patient in hardship, adversity, and times of danger. These are the ones who are truthful, and these are the ones mindful of Allah.
178. O you who believe, fair retribution is prescribed for you in cases of murder: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. But if he is pardoned by the victim's relative, then compensation should be sought fairly and paid kindly. This is an easing and mercy from your Lord. Whoever transgresses after this, will suffer a painful punishment.
179. In fair retribution, there is life for you, O people of understanding, so that you may become mindful of Allah.
180. It is prescribed for you, when death approaches any of you who leaves behind wealth, to make a fair will for parents and close relatives — a duty upon those mindful of Allah.
181. Whoever alters the will after hearing it, the sin rests only upon those who alter it. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
182. But whoever fears partiality or wrongdoing from the testator, and reconciles between the parties, there is no sin upon him. Allah is truly Forgiving, Merciful.
183. O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you, just as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become mindful of Allah.
184. It is for a limited number of days. But whoever among you is ill, or traveling, let them fast an equal number of days later. For those who can barely endure it, there is a compensation: feeding a needy person. Yet whoever willingly does more good, it is better for them. And fasting is better for you, if only you knew.
185. It was in the month of Ramadan that the Quran was revealed — a guidance for all people, clear proofs of guidance, and the criterion between right and wrong. So whoever among you witnesses this month, let them fast it. But whoever is ill or traveling, let them fast an equal number of days later. Allah intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period, glorify Allah for guiding you, and perhaps become grateful.
186. When My servants ask you about Me, truly I am near. I answer the call of the caller whenever he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, so that they may be rightly guided.
187. It is permitted for you during the nights of fasting, to be intimate with your wives. They are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them. Allah knew that you were betraying yourselves, so He turned to you in mercy, and pardoned you. Now you may be intimate with them, and seek what Allah has ordained for you. Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black thread of night, then complete your fast until nightfall. But do not be intimate with your wives while you are in spiritual retreat in the mosques. These are the limits set by Allah, so do not approach them. Thus Allah makes His revelations clear to people, so that they may become mindful of Him.
188. Do not wrongfully consume one another's wealth, nor offer it to the judges, to unjustly take a portion of people's property, while you know.
189. They ask you about the phases of the moon. Say, "They are markers of time for people and for the pilgrimage." Righteousness is not entering houses from their backs; rather, righteousness is being mindful of Allah. So enter houses through their proper doors, and be mindful of Allah, so that you may succeed.
190. Fight in Allah's cause against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits — Allah certainly does not love those who transgress.
191. Kill them wherever you encounter them, and drive them out from where they drove you out, for oppression is worse than killing. But do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque, unless they fight you there. If they fight you, then kill them — such is the recompense of those who deny the truth.
192. But if they cease, then surely Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
193. Fight them until persecution no longer exists, and worship is devoted entirely to Allah. But if they cease, then hostility is permitted only against those who do wrong.
194. A sacred month for a sacred month — and for the sacred things, there is retribution. Whoever commits aggression against you, respond to him with equal measure. Be mindful of Allah, and know that Allah is with those who are reverent.
195. Spend in Allah's cause, and do not cast yourselves into ruin by your own hands. Do good, for Allah truly loves those who do good.
196. Complete the pilgrimage and the lesser pilgrimage for Allah. But if you are prevented, then should offer whatever sacrifice is easily affordable. Do not shave your heads until the sacrifice reaches its destination. If any of you is ill, or has an ailment of the scalp, then compensate by fasting, giving charity, or offering a sacrifice. When you are safe, whoever combines the lesser pilgrimage with the pilgrimage, should offer whatever sacrifice is easily affordable. But if one cannot afford it, then fast three days during the pilgrimage and seven days after returning — ten days altogether. This applies to those whose families do not reside near the Sacred Mosque. Be mindful of Allah, and know that Allah is severe in punishment.
197. The pilgrimage takes place during known months. Whoever undertakes the pilgrimage during these months must avoid sexual intimacy, wrongdoing, and arguments during the pilgrimage. Whatever good you do, Allah knows it. Prepare yourselves well, but the best preparation is reverence. So be mindful of Me, O people of understanding.
198. There is no blame on you if you seek bounty from your Lord. When you depart from Arafat, remember Allah at the sacred landmark, and remember Him as He guided you, though before this, you were surely among those astray.
199. Then move onward from where the people move onward, and seek Allah's forgiveness. Truly, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
200. When you have completed your rites, remember Allah as you remember your parents, or even more intensely. Among the people are those who say, "Our Lord, give us in this world," yet they will have no share in the Hereafter.
201. But among them are those who say, "Our Lord, grant us good in this world, and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."
202. These will have a share from what they have earned. Allah is swift in reckoning.
203. Remember Allah during the appointed days. Whoever departs after two days incurs no sin, and whoever stays longer incurs no sin, provided they remain mindful of Allah. Be mindful of Allah, and know that you will surely be gathered before Him.
204. Among the people is one whose speech in the worldly life impresses you, and who calls Allah to witness what is in his heart — yet he is the fiercest of opponents.
205. When he turns away, he strives throughout the land to spread corruption, destroying crops and offspring. Allah does not like corruption.
206. When he is told, "Be mindful of Allah," pride drives him deeper into sin. Hellfire is enough for him — what a miserable resting place!
207. Yet among the people is one who sells himself seeking Allah's pleasure. Allah is truly kind to His servants.
208. O you who believe, enter wholeheartedly into submission, and do not follow Satan's footsteps — he is clearly your enemy.
209. But if you stumble after clear proofs have come to you, then know that Allah is Almighty, Wise.
210. Are they waiting for Allah Himself to come to them in shadows of clouds, along with the angels, and the matter will have been decided? To Allah all matters return.
211. Ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We gave them. Whoever exchanges Allah's blessing after it has come to him — Allah is severe in punishment.
212. For those who deny the truth, this worldly life has been made alluring, and they mock those who believe. Yet on the Day of Resurrection, those mindful of Allah will be above them. Allah provides abundantly to whomever He wills.
213. Humanity was once a single community. Then Allah sent prophets bearing good news and warnings, and with them He revealed the Scripture in truth, to judge between people regarding their disputes. Yet none disputed it except those who received it — after clear proofs had come to them — out of rivalry among themselves. Then Allah guided, by His permission, those who believed to the truth about which they differed. Allah guides whomever He wills to a straight path.
214. Do you think you will enter Paradise without experiencing what those before you endured? They were touched by hardship and suffering, and shaken so severely, that even the Messenger and those who believed with him, cried out, "When will Allah's help arrive?" Truly, Allah's help is near.
215. They ask you what they should spend. Say, "Whatever good you spend should be for parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, and the traveler. Whatever good you do, Allah is fully aware of it."
216. Fighting has been prescribed for you, though you dislike it. Perhaps you dislike something that is good for you, and perhaps you love something that is harmful for you. Allah knows, and you do not know.
217. They ask you about fighting during the sacred month. Say, "Fighting during it is a grave offense. But turning people away from Allah's path, rejecting Him, barring access to the Sacred Mosque, and expelling its people from it — these are even graver offenses in Allah's sight. Persecution is worse than killing." They will not stop fighting you, until they turn you away from your faith, if they can. Whoever among you abandons his faith, and dies as a disbeliever — their deeds will be worthless in this world and the Hereafter. They are the companions of the Fire, remaining there forever.
218. Surely, those who believe, who migrate, and who strive in Allah's cause — they are the ones who hope for Allah's mercy. Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
219. They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, "In them is great sin, and some benefit for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit." They ask you what they should spend. Say, "What is beyond your needs." Thus Allah makes clear His revelations to you, so that you may reflect.
220. In this world, and the Hereafter. They ask you about orphans. Say, "Improving their condition is best. If you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers." Allah knows who intends harm, and who intends good. Had Allah wished, He could have burdened you greatly. Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.
221. Do not marry women who associate others with Allah, until they believe. A believing slave woman is better than an idolater, even if she pleases you. And do not marry men who associate others with Allah, until they believe. A believing slave man is better than an idolater, even if he pleases you. Those invite you to the Fire, while Allah invites you, by His permission, to Paradise and forgiveness. He makes His revelations clear to people, so they may take heed.
222. They ask you about menstruation. Say, "It is a discomfort, so keep away from women during menstruation, and do not approach them, until they are purified. When they have purified themselves, then come to them as Allah has commanded you." Truly, Allah loves those who turn to Him in repentance, and He loves those who purify themselves.
223. Your wives are your fields, so approach your fields however you wish, and prepare for yourselves. Be mindful of Allah, and know that you will surely meet Him. And give glad tidings to the believers.
224. Do not make Allah an excuse in your oaths against doing good, being mindful of Him, or making peace among people. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
225. Allah will not hold you accountable for careless oaths, but He will hold you accountable for what your hearts have intended. Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing.
226. Those who swear to abstain from their wives, must wait four months. If they return, then surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
227. But if they resolve on divorce, then surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
228. Divorced women must wait by themselves for three menstrual cycles. It is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs, if they truly believe in Allah and the Last Day. Their husbands have the greater right to take them back during this period, if they desire reconciliation. Women have rights similar to their obligations, according to what is fair, though men have a degree above them. Allah is Almighty, Wise.
229. Divorce may be pronounced twice. After that, either keep them honorably, or release them kindly. It is not lawful for you to take back anything you have given them, unless both fear they cannot uphold Allah's limits. If you fear they cannot uphold Allah's limits, there is no blame on either of them, if she offers compensation to gain her release. These are Allah's limits, so do not transgress them. Whoever transgresses Allah's limits — those are the wrongdoers.
230. If he divorces her again, she is no longer lawful for him, until she marries another husband. If the second husband divorces her, there is no blame upon them if they return to each other, if they think they can uphold Allah's limits. These are Allah's limits, which He makes clear for people who understand.
231. When you divorce women, and they reach the end of their waiting period, either keep them honorably, or release them kindly. Do not hold onto them intending harm, or to oppress them. Whoever does this wrongs his own soul. Do not take Allah's revelations lightly. Remember Allah's favor upon you, and what He has revealed to you of the Scripture and wisdom, instructing you through it. Be mindful of Allah, and know that Allah has full knowledge of everything.
232. When you divorce women, and they reach the end of their waiting period, do not prevent them from remarrying their former husbands, if they mutually agree in an honorable manner. This is an instruction for those among you who believe in Allah and the Last Day. This is purer, and better for you. Allah knows, and you do not know.
233. Mothers may nurse their children for two full years, for those who wish to complete the nursing period. The father must provide for the mothers' food and clothing honorably. No soul is burdened beyond its capacity. Neither mother nor father should be harmed because of their child. And upon the heir is the like of that. If both parents mutually agree, after consultation, to wean the child earlier, there is no blame upon them. And if you wish to have your children nursed by others, there is no blame upon you, provided you pay fairly what you have agreed. Be mindful of Allah, and know that Allah sees all that you do.
234. Those among you who pass away leaving wives behind — their widows must wait by themselves for four months and ten days. When they have completed their waiting period, there is no blame upon you for what they do with themselves in a lawful manner. Allah is fully aware of all that you do.
235. There is no blame upon you, if you subtly express interest in marrying these women, or keep such intentions to yourselves. Allah knows that you will think of them. But do not secretly promise them marriage — only speak honorably. Do not finalize the marriage contract, until the prescribed waiting period has ended. Know that Allah is aware of what is within your hearts, so be cautious of Him. And know that Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing.
236. There is no blame upon you if you divorce women before touching them, or assigning a bridal gift. But provide for them — the wealthy according to his means, and the poor according to his means — a fair provision. This is a duty upon those who do good.
237. And if you divorce them before touching them, but after assigning a bridal gift, then give half of what you assigned, unless they waive it, or the one who holds the marriage contract waives it. To waive it is closer to righteousness. Do not forget kindness among yourselves. Allah is Seeing of what you do.
238. Guard carefully your prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah with humble devotion.
239. If you fear danger, pray while walking or riding. But when you are safe again, remember Allah, as He taught you what you did not know.
240. Those among you who pass away, leaving wives behind, should leave instructions for their wives, to be provided for a full year, without being forced to leave their homes. But if they choose to leave on their own, there is no blame upon you for whatever honorable decisions they make for themselves. Allah is Almighty, Wise.
241. Divorced women should be provided for, according to what is acceptable. This is a duty upon those mindful of Allah.
242. Thus Allah makes clear His revelations to you, so that you may understand.
243. Have you not considered those who fled their homes, by the thousands, fearing death? Allah said to them, "Die." And then He brought them back to life. Allah is truly bountiful to humankind, but most people are ungrateful.
244. Fight in Allah's cause, and know that Allah hears and knows all things.
245. Who will lend Allah a generous loan, so He may multiply it many times over? It is Allah Who withholds and gives abundantly, and to Him you will return.
246. Have you not considered the leaders of the Children of Israel, after Moses? They said to one of their prophets, "Appoint for us a king, and we will fight in Allah's cause." He replied, "Would you perhaps refuse to fight, if fighting were prescribed for you?" They said, "Why would we not fight in Allah's cause, when we have been driven from our homes, and separated from our children?" Yet when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away, except for a few. Allah knows well those who do wrong.
247. Their prophet said to them, "Allah has appointed Saul as your king." But they protested, "How can he have kingship over us, when we are more deserving of kingship than he is, and he has not been given abundant wealth?" He replied, "Allah has chosen him over you, and has increased him greatly in knowledge and physical strength. Allah grants kingship to whomever He wills. Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing."
248. Their prophet further said to them, "The sign of his kingship is that the Ark will come to you, containing tranquility from your Lord, and relics left behind by the families of Moses and Aaron, carried by angels. Truly, in this is a clear sign for you, if you are believers."
249. When Saul set out with his army, he said, "Allah will test you with a river. Whoever drinks from it is not with me, but whoever refrains from tasting it is surely with me — except for those who scoop up just a handful." Yet most of them drank from it, except for a few. When he and those who believed with him crossed it, they said, "Today we have no strength against Goliath and his forces." But those who were certain they would meet Allah said, "How often has a small group overcome a mighty army by Allah's permission! Allah is with those who patiently endure."
250. And when they faced Goliath and his troops, they prayed, "Our Lord, pour patience upon us, keep our feet firm, and grant us victory over the people who disbelieve."
251. So they defeated them by Allah's permission, and David killed Goliath. Allah granted him kingship and wisdom, and taught him whatever He willed. If Allah did not repel some people by means of others, the earth would surely become corrupted — but Allah is gracious to the worlds.
252. These are Allah's revelations, which We recite to you in truth, and you are surely among the messengers.
253. These messengers — We favored some above others. Among them were those to whom Allah spoke directly, and some He raised high in rank. We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear miracles and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Had Allah willed, those who came after them would not have fought one another after clear signs had reached them. But they differed — some believed, while others rejected. Had Allah willed, they would not have fought, but Allah does whatever He intends.
254. O you who believe, spend from what We have provided you, before a Day comes when there will be no trading, no friendship, and no intercession. The disbelievers — they are the wrongdoers.
255. Allah — there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness, nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs everything in the heavens, and everything on earth. Who can intercede with Him, except by His permission? He knows what lies before them, and what lies behind them, while they grasp nothing of His knowledge, except what He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Magnificent.
256. There is no compulsion in religion. The right path has become clearly distinct from error. Whoever rejects false gods, and believes in Allah has grasped the firmest handhold, which never breaks. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
257. Allah is the Protector of those who believe; He brings them out of darkness into the light. But those who disbelieve — their protectors are false gods, who lead them from the light into darkness. They are the people of the Fire, and there they will remain forever.
258. Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord, because Allah had granted him kingship? When Abraham said, "My Lord is the One Who gives life and causes death," he replied, "I too give life and cause death." Abraham said, "Allah brings the sun from the east; then bring it from the west." Thus the disbeliever was utterly confounded. Allah does not guide unjust people.
259. Or consider the one who passed by a town, that had collapsed into ruin. He wondered, "How can Allah bring this back to life after its death?" So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him again. Allah asked, "How long have you remained?" He replied, "I have remained a day, or part of a day." Allah said, "No, you have remained for a hundred years. Look at your food and drink — they have not spoiled. And look at your donkey. We will make you a sign for the people. Now look at the bones — how We raise them, and then cover them with flesh." When it became clear to him, he said, "Now I know that Allah has power over all things."
260. And remember when Abraham said, "My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead." Allah asked, "Do you not believe?" Abraham replied, "Yes, but so my heart may be reassured." Allah said, "Then take four birds, draw them to you, then place a portion of them on each mountain, then call them — they will come swiftly to you. And know that Allah is Almighty, All-Wise."
261. The example of those who spend their wealth in Allah's way, is like a seed, that sprouts seven ears, each ear bearing a hundred grains. Allah multiplies for whomever He wills. Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
262. Those who spend their wealth in Allah's way, and afterward do not follow their giving with reminders of generosity, or hurtful words, will have their reward with their Lord. They will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
263. A kind word and forgiveness are better than charity followed by hurtful words. Allah is Self-Sufficient, Ever-Forbearing.
264. O you who believe, do not invalidate your charity by reminders of generosity or hurtful words, like someone who spends his wealth to be seen by people, and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day. His example is like a smooth rock covered with soil — heavy rain falls upon it, leaving it bare. They gain nothing from their efforts. Allah does not guide those who refuse to believe.
265. And the example of those who spend their wealth seeking Allah's pleasure, and out of firm resolve from themselves, is like a garden on high ground: heavy rain falls upon it, and it yields double its harvest. Even if heavy rain does not fall, a gentle drizzle is enough. Allah sees clearly all that you do.
266. Would any of you wish to have a garden of palm trees and grapevines, beneath which rivers flow, filled with all kinds of fruits, but then old age overtakes him, and he has weak children — and suddenly a fiery whirlwind strikes the garden, so it is burned? This is how Allah makes His signs clear to you, so that you may reflect.
267. O you who believe, give from the good things you have earned, and from what We have brought forth for you from the earth. Do not deliberately choose the worthless things to give away — things you yourselves would only reluctantly accept. Know that Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.
268. Satan threatens you with poverty, and urges you toward indecency, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Himself, and abundant grace. Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
269. He grants wisdom to whomever He wills, and whoever is granted wisdom has truly received abundant good. Yet none reflect deeply, except those of insight.
270. Whatever charity you give or vow you make, Allah surely knows it. And the wrongdoers will have no helpers.
271. If you give charity openly, it is good; but if you give it secretly to the needy, it is even better for you, and He will remove some of your misdeeds. Allah is fully aware of all that you do.
272. It is not your responsibility to guide them, but Allah guides whomever He wills. Whatever good you spend, is for your own benefit, and you spend only seeking Allah's pleasure. Whatever good you spend, will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.
273. Charity is for the needy, who are prevented in Allah's cause, unable to travel freely in the land. Those unaware of their situation think them wealthy because of their dignity. You will recognize them by their appearance — they do not beg persistently from people. Whatever good you spend, Allah is fully aware of it.
274. Those who spend their wealth by night and by day, secretly and openly, will have their reward with their Lord. They will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
275. Those who consume interest, will rise only as one rises whom Satan has driven to madness by his touch. That is because they say, "Trade is just like interest," yet Allah has permitted trade, and forbidden interest. Whoever receives a warning from his Lord, and then stops, may keep what he previously gained, and his case rests with Allah. But whoever returns to it — these are the companions of the Fire, where they will remain forever.
276. Allah destroys interest and multiplies charity. Allah does not love any unbeliever steeped in sin.
277. Certainly, those who believe, do righteous deeds, establish prayer, and give charity, will have their reward with their Lord. They will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
278. O you who believe, be mindful of Allah, and give up any remaining interest, if you truly believe.
279. If you do not, then be warned of war from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may keep your principal amounts, neither wronging others, nor being wronged yourselves.
280. If someone is in hardship, grant him time until ease comes. But if you waive it as charity, it is better for you, if only you knew.
281. And fear the Day when you will be returned to Allah. Then every soul will be repaid fully for what it earned, and none will be wronged.
282. O you who believe, when you enter into a debt agreement for a fixed period, write it down. Let a scribe record it fairly between you, and no scribe should refuse to write, as Allah has taught him. So let him write, and let the debtor dictate, mindful of Allah, his Lord, and not diminish anything from it. If the debtor is weak-minded, infirm, or unable to dictate himself, let his guardian dictate fairly. Call upon two witnesses from among your men; if two men are not available, then one man and two women whose testimony you accept, so that if one of them forgets, the other can remind her. Witnesses must not refuse when summoned. Do not neglect to write down debts, whether small or large, along with their due dates. This is more just in Allah's sight, more reliable as evidence, and more likely to prevent doubt among you. However, if it is an immediate trade transaction conducted among yourselves, there is no blame if you do not write it down. But have witnesses present when you trade with one another. Neither scribe nor witness should be harmed, for if you do so, it is sinful on your part. Be mindful of Allah, and Allah will teach you. Allah has full knowledge of all things.
283. If you are traveling, and cannot find a scribe, then take something as security in hand. But if you trust one another, let the one trusted fulfill his trust, and let him be mindful of Allah, his Lord. Do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it, his heart is sinful. Allah is fully aware of all you do.
284. To Allah belongs everything in the heavens and the earth. Whether you reveal what is within yourselves, or conceal it, Allah will hold you accountable for it. He forgives whom He wills, and punishes whom He wills. Allah has power over all things.
285. The Messenger believes in what was revealed to him from his Lord, as do the believers. All of them believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers, saying, "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord; to You is the final return."
286. Allah does not burden any soul beyond its capacity. Each soul will have the reward of the good it has earned, and bear the consequence of the evil it has committed. Our Lord, do not hold us accountable if we forget or make mistakes. Our Lord, do not place upon us a burden, like the one You placed upon those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us beyond our strength. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our Protector, so grant us victory over those who reject the truth.
