In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
1. Alif. Lam. Meem. Ra. These are the verses of the Book. What has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, yet most people do not believe.
2. Allah is the One Who raised the heavens without pillars that you can see, then established Himself upon the Throne. He subjected the sun and the moon, each running its course for an appointed term. He directs all affairs, and clearly explains the signs, so that you may be certain of meeting your Lord.
3. He is the One Who spread out the earth, placed firm mountains and rivers upon it, and created pairs of every kind of fruit. He covers the day with the night. Truly, in all this are signs for people who reflect.
4. On the earth are neighboring tracts of land, gardens of grapevines, fields of crops, and date palms — some growing in clusters, others standing alone — all watered by the same water, yet We make some fruits superior to others in taste. Surely, in this are signs for people who understand.
5. If you find something astonishing, then astonishing indeed is their saying, "When we have become dust, will we truly be created anew?" These are the ones who deny their Lord. They will have shackles around their necks, and they are the companions of the Fire, where they will remain forever.
6. They impatiently demand from you punishment rather than mercy, though examples of punishment have already passed before them. Certainly, your Lord is full of forgiveness toward people, despite their wrongdoing, yet your Lord is also severe in punishment.
7. Those who disbelieve say, "Why has no miraculous sign been sent down to him from his Lord?" You are only a warner, and every people has its guide.
8. Allah knows what every female carries, and what the wombs lose or gain. Everything with Him has its precise measure.
9. He is the Knower of the unseen and the seen — the Great, the Most Exalted.
10. It makes no difference whether one of you speaks secretly, or openly, whether one hides in the darkness of night, or moves freely in broad daylight.
11. Each person has guardian angels before him and behind him, protecting him by Allah's command. Certainly, Allah does not change the condition of a people, until they change what is within themselves. And when Allah intends harm for a people, no one can prevent it, nor do they have any protector besides Him.
12. He is the One Who shows you lightning, inspiring both fear and hope, and He forms the heavy clouds.
13. Thunder glorifies His praise, as do the angels, out of awe of Him. He sends thunderbolts, striking with them whomever He wills. Yet they argue about Allah, while He is mighty in power.
14. To Him alone belongs the call of truth. Those they call upon besides Him cannot answer them at all — like someone stretching out his hands toward water, hoping it will reach his mouth, though it never will. The prayers of the unbelievers are only in vain.
15. All who are in the heavens and the earth prostrate to Allah, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows, morning and evening.
16. Say, "Who is Lord of the heavens and the earth?" Say, "Allah." Say, "Then why do you take allies besides Him, who have no power to benefit or harm even themselves?" Say, "Are the blind and the seeing equal? Or is darkness equal to light? Or have they given Allah partners who created as He creates, so that creation seems alike to them?" Say, "Allah alone is the Creator of all things, and He is the One, the Supreme."
17. He sends down water from the sky, causing valleys to flow according to their measure. The rushing flood carries rising foam. Likewise, from what people melt in fire to make jewelry or tools, there arises similar foam. This is how Allah illustrates truth and falsehood: the foam vanishes, cast away, but what benefits people remains on earth. This is how Allah sets forth examples.
18. Those who respond to their Lord, will have the best reward. But those who do not respond to Him — if they possessed everything on earth, and twice as much again, they would surely offer it as ransom. For them awaits a terrible reckoning, and their home will be Hell — what a miserable resting place!
19. Can someone who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, be compared to someone who is blind? Only those of understanding will take heed.
20. Those who fulfill their covenant with Allah, and never break their pledge.
21. Those who maintain the bonds Allah has commanded to be maintained, who stand in awe of their Lord, and fear a harsh reckoning.
22. Those who patiently persevere, seeking their Lord's approval, who establish prayer, who spend secretly and openly from what We have provided them, and who repel evil with good — these will have the ultimate home.
23. Gardens of eternal bliss, which they will enter along with the righteous among their parents, spouses, and descendants. Angels will come to them from every gate.
24. "Peace be upon you for your patience. How excellent is the final home!"
25. But those who break their covenant with Allah after pledging it, sever the bonds Allah commanded to be maintained, and spread corruption on earth — upon them is the curse, and theirs will be the worst home.
26. Allah grants abundant provision to whomever He wills, and restricts it. Yet they rejoice in this worldly life, though compared to the Hereafter, this worldly life is nothing but a fleeting enjoyment.
27. Those who disbelieve say, "Why hasn't a miracle been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "Allah lets stray whomever He wills, and guides to Himself whoever turns to Him."
28. Those who believe, whose hearts find peace in remembering Allah — truly, hearts find peace only in remembering Allah.
29. Those who believe and do righteous deeds — joy awaits them, and a beautiful homecoming.
30. Thus We have sent you into a nation, before which other nations have passed away, so that you may recite to them what We revealed to you. Yet they deny the Most Merciful. Say, "He is my Lord; there is no god but Him. In Him I place my trust, and to Him is my return."
31. Even if there were a Quran by which mountains could be moved, or the earth split apart, or the dead made to speak — still, all matters rest entirely with Allah. Haven't the believers realized, that if Allah had willed, He could have guided all people? Disaster will continue to strike the disbelievers, or fall close to their homes, because of what they have done, until Allah's promise comes to pass. Certainly, Allah never breaks His promise.
32. Messengers before you were mocked as well, but I granted the disbelievers time, then I seized them. How severe was My punishment!
33. Is He Who watches over every soul, and all it does, like any other? Yet they ascribe partners to Allah. Say, "Name them! Or are you informing Him of something He does not know on earth, or is this merely empty talk?" Rather, the disbelievers' schemes have been made appealing to them, and they have been turned away from the right path. Whoever Allah lets stray, will have no guide.
34. They will suffer punishment in this worldly life, but the punishment of the Hereafter is far harsher. They will have no protector against Allah.
35. The Paradise promised to those mindful of Allah, is like this: rivers flow beneath it, its fruits everlasting, and its shade never-ending. That is the reward awaiting those who are reverent. But the reward awaiting those who deny the truth is the Fire.
36. Those to whom We gave the Scripture rejoice in what has been revealed to you, yet among the factions are some who reject parts of it. Say, "I have only been commanded to worship Allah alone, associating none with Him. To Him I call, and to Him is my return."
37. Thus We have revealed it as a decisive judgment, in Arabic. If you were to follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you would have neither protector nor defender against Allah.
38. We certainly sent messengers before you, and granted them spouses and offspring. No messenger could bring any sign except by Allah's permission. For every appointed time, there is a decree.
39. Allah erases whatever He wills, and confirms whatever He wills, and with Him is the Source of the Book.
40. Whether We show you some of what We have promised them, or cause you to pass away before that, your duty is only to deliver the message, and the reckoning is Ours.
41. Do they not see how We approach the land, gradually reducing it from its edges? Allah alone judges, and none can overturn His judgment. He is swift in reckoning.
42. Those before them plotted as well, but all planning belongs entirely to Allah. He knows what every soul earns, and soon the disbelievers will know who will have the ultimate home.
43. Those who deny say, "You are not a messenger." Say, "Allah is sufficient as a witness between you and me, as well as those who possess knowledge of the Scripture."
