In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
1. Alif. Lam. Ra. This is a Book whose verses have been perfected, then clearly explained — from One Who is All-Wise, All-Aware.
2. Worship none but Allah. I am sent by Him to you as a warner, and a bearer of good news.
3. Seek forgiveness from your Lord, then turn to Him in repentance. He will grant you a goodly enjoyment until an appointed time, and will bestow His grace upon everyone deserving of grace. But if you turn away, I fear for you the punishment of a momentous Day.
4. To Allah is your return, and He has power over all things.
5. They fold up their hearts, trying to hide from Him. Yet even when they cover themselves with their garments, He knows all they conceal, and all they reveal. Truly, He knows well what lies within hearts.
6. There is no creature on earth whose provision is not upon Allah. He knows its dwelling place, and its resting place. All is recorded in a clear Book.
7. He is the One Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and His Throne was upon the water, to test you — which of you is best in deeds. Yet if you say, "You will surely be raised after death," those who disbelieve will say, "This is nothing but clear magic."
8. And if We delay their punishment until an appointed time, they will surely say, "What is holding it back?" But on the Day it comes to them, nothing will turn it away, and what they used to mock will surround them completely.
9. If We let a human being taste mercy from Us, then take it away from him, he becomes utterly hopeless, ungrateful.
10. But if We let him taste blessings, after hardship has touched him, he will surely say, "All my troubles have left me," becoming boastful and proud.
11. Except those who patiently endure, and do righteous deeds — for them is forgiveness and a great reward.
12. Perhaps you may feel inclined to leave aside some of what is revealed to you, and your heart may feel distressed by their saying, "Why has no treasure been sent down to him, or why has no angel come with him?" You are only a warner, and Allah is the Guardian over all things.
13. Or do they say, "He has invented it"? Say, "Then bring ten invented chapters like it, and call upon whoever you can besides Allah, if you are truthful."
14. But if they do not respond to you, then know that it has been revealed with Allah's knowledge, and that there is no god but Him. Will you then submit?
15. Whoever desires the life of this world and its glitter, We will fully repay them for their deeds here, and they will not be shortchanged.
16. These are the ones who will have nothing in the Hereafter except the Fire. All they accomplished here will come to nothing, and everything they did will prove worthless.
17. Those who stand upon clear proof from their Lord, supported by a witness from Him, and preceded by the Book of Moses, as a guide and mercy — these are the ones who truly believe in it. But whoever among the factions rejects it, the Fire will be their promised place. So do not harbor any doubt about it; it is the truth from your Lord, yet most people refuse to believe.
18. Who could be more unjust than those who invent lies about Allah? They will be brought before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, "These are the ones who lied against their Lord." Truly, Allah's curse is upon the wrongdoers.
19. Those who turn others away from Allah's path, seeking to twist it, and who deny the Hereafter.
20. They will never escape Allah's power on earth, nor will they have any protectors besides Allah. Their punishment will be doubled. They could neither hear nor see the truth.
21. These are the ones who have utterly lost themselves, and all they invented will abandon them.
22. Without question, in the Hereafter, they will be the greatest losers.
23. Surely, those who believe, do righteous deeds, and humbly submit themselves to their Lord — they are the people of Paradise, where they will remain forever.
24. The example of these two groups, is like the blind and deaf, compared to the seeing and hearing. Can they ever be equal? Will you not then reflect?
25. Certainly, We sent Noah to his people, and he said, "I am a clear warner to you.
26. That you worship none but Allah. Truly, I fear for you the punishment of a painful Day."
27. But the disbelieving leaders among his people said, "We see you as nothing but a human being like ourselves, and we notice that only the lowest among us follow you — the simple-minded. Nor do we see any superiority in you over us; rather, we think you are liars."
28. Noah said, O my people, consider this: if I stand upon clear evidence from my Lord, and He has granted me mercy from Himself — but you are blind to it — should we force it upon, you while you despise it?
29. O my people, I do not ask you for any wealth; my reward comes only from Allah. Nor will I drive away those who believe; surely, they will meet their Lord. Yet I see that you are a people acting ignorantly.
30. And, O my people, who would protect me from Allah, if I drove them away? Will you not then reflect?
31. Nor do I say to you that I possess Allah's treasures, nor that I know the unseen, nor do I claim to be an angel. Nor will I say about those whom your eyes look down upon, that Allah will not give them any good — Allah knows best what is within their souls. If I did, I would surely be among the unjust."
32. They said, "Noah, you have argued with us, and argued too much. Now bring upon us what you threaten, if you are truthful."
33. He replied, "Only Allah will bring it upon you, if He wills, and you cannot escape Him.
34. My advice will not benefit you, no matter how sincerely I wish to advise you, if Allah intends to let you stray. He is your Lord, and to Him you will return."
35. Or do they say, "He has invented it"? Say, "If I have invented it, then my crime is upon me alone, but I am innocent of the crimes you commit."
36. It was revealed to Noah: "None of your people will believe beyond those who already have, so do not grieve over what they have done."
37. "Build the Ark under Our watchful eyes, and according to Our revelation, and do not plead with Me concerning those who have done wrong — they will surely be drowned."
38. So he began building the Ark, and whenever leaders from his people passed by, they mocked him. He said, "If you mock us now, we will soon mock you, just as you mock us."
39. "You will soon know who will receive a humiliating punishment, and upon whom a lasting torment will descend."
40. When Our command came and the oven overflowed, We said, "Carry aboard two of every kind, your family — except those against whom the decree has already been made — and those who believe." But only a few believed with him.
41. Noah said, "Board it! In the name of Allah is its sailing and its anchoring. My Lord is truly Forgiving, Merciful."
42. And so it sailed with them through waves towering like mountains. Noah called out to his son, who stood apart, "My dear son, come aboard with us, and do not remain with the disbelievers!"
43. He replied, "I will take refuge on a mountain — it will protect me from the water." Noah said, "Today, nothing can protect anyone from Allah's decree, except those upon whom He has mercy." Then the waves surged between them, and he was among those who drowned.
44. Then it was said, "O earth, swallow your water! O sky, hold back!" The waters receded, the command was fulfilled, and the Ark rested upon Mount Judi. Then it was proclaimed, "Away with the wrongdoing people!"
45. Noah called out to his Lord, saying, "My Lord, my son was surely part of my family, and Your promise is true. You are the most just of all judges."
46. Allah said, "O Noah, he is not of your family — it is an unrighteous deed. Do not ask Me about things of which you have no knowledge. I warn you, lest you become one of the ignorant."
47. Noah said, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking about things of which I have no knowledge. Unless You forgive me and have mercy on me, I will surely be among the losers."
48. It was said, "O Noah, descend with peace from Us, and blessings upon you and upon nations descending from those with you. But there will be other nations whom We will grant enjoyment for a time, then a painful punishment from Us will afflict them."
49. These are accounts of the unseen that We reveal to you. Neither you nor your people knew them before this. So be patient — the ultimate outcome belongs to those mindful of Allah.
50. And to the people of Aad, We sent their brother Hud. He said, "O my people, worship Allah alone — you have no god besides Him. You are only inventing lies.
51. My people, I ask no reward from you for this message. My reward comes only from the One Who created me. Will you not then understand?
52. My people, seek forgiveness from your Lord, then turn to Him in repentance. He will send abundant rain from the sky upon you, and add strength to your strength. Do not turn away as criminals."
53. They said, "Hud, you have brought us no clear proof. We will not abandon our gods just because of your words, nor will we believe in you.
54. We only say that some of our gods have afflicted you with harm." He replied, "I call Allah to witness, and you bear witness, that I am free from what you associate.
55. So plot against me, all of you, and give me no respite.
56. I have placed my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature, except that He holds it by its forelock. Truly, my Lord is upon a straight path.
57. But if you turn away, I have already delivered the message I was sent with. My Lord will replace you with another people, and you cannot harm Him in the least. Truly, my Lord watches over all things."
58. And when Our command came, by Our mercy We saved Hud and those who believed with him, rescuing them from a harsh punishment.
59. And that was Aad. They rejected the signs of their Lord, disobeyed His messengers, and followed the command of every stubborn tyrant.
60. They were pursued by a curse in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection. Truly, the people of Aad rejected their Lord. Away with Aad, the people of Hud!
61. And to Thamud, We sent their brother Salih. He said, "My people, worship Allah alone — you have no god besides Him. He brought you forth from the earth, and settled you upon it. So seek His forgiveness, then turn to Him in repentance. Truly, my Lord is near and responsive."
62. They said, "Salih, you were a source of hope among us before this. Do you now forbid us from worshiping what our ancestors worshiped? We are in grave doubt about what you are calling us to."
63. He said, "My people, consider this: if I have clear proof from my Lord, and He has granted me mercy from Himself, who would protect me from Allah, if I disobeyed Him? You would only increase my loss."
64. "My people, this is Allah's she-camel — a sign for you. Leave her to graze freely on Allah's land, and do not harm her, or a swift punishment will seize you."
65. But they hamstrung her. So he said, "Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three more days. This is a promise that will not be proven false."
66. When Our command came, We saved Salih and those who believed with him by Our mercy, from the disgrace of that day. Truly, your Lord is the Powerful, the Almighty.
67. And the mighty blast overtook those who had done wrong, leaving them lifeless in their homes.
68. As if they had never flourished there. Surely, Thamud rejected their Lord. So away with Thamud!
69. Certainly, Our messengers came to Abraham with good news. They greeted him, saying, "Peace." He replied, "Peace," and without delay, brought them a roasted calf.
70. But when he saw their hands not reaching toward it, he became uneasy and felt afraid of them. They said, "Do not fear; we have been sent to the people of Lot."
71. His wife was standing nearby and laughed, so We gave her glad tidings of Isaac, and after Isaac, Jacob.
72. She exclaimed, "Woe to me! Shall I bear a child, when I am an old woman, and my husband here is an elderly man? This is truly remarkable!"
73. They said, "Are you amazed at Allah's decree? Allah's mercy and blessings are upon you, people of this household. He is Praiseworthy, Glorious."
74. When Abraham's fear had subsided, and the joyful news reached him, he began pleading with Us concerning the people of Lot.
75. Abraham was truly gentle, tenderhearted, and ever turning to Allah.
76. "Abraham, leave this matter alone. Your Lord's command has already come, and a punishment that cannot be turned back will reach them."
77. When Our messengers came to Lot, he was distressed by their arrival, and felt helpless, saying, "This is a terribly difficult day."
78. His people rushed toward him. And before this, they used to commit evil deeds. He said, "My people, here are my daughters — they are purer for you. Fear Allah, and do not disgrace me concerning my guests. Is there not a single right-minded man among you?"
79. They replied, "You already know we have no interest in your daughters, and you surely know what we desire."
80. He said, "If only I had the strength to resist you, or could lean upon some strong support."
81. The messengers said, "Lot, we are messengers from your Lord. They will never reach you. Depart with your family during the night, and let none of you look back, except your wife. She will suffer the same fate as the others. Their appointed time is the morning. Is not the morning near?"
82. When Our command came, We turned their cities upside down, and rained upon them stones of layered, baked clay.
83. Marked by your Lord. Such punishment is never far from those who do wrong.
84. And to Midian We sent their brother Shuayb. He said, "My people, worship Allah alone — you have no god besides Him. Do not cheat in measuring and weighing. I see you living in prosperity, yet I fear for you the punishment of an overwhelming Day."
85. "My people, give full measure, and weight with fairness. Do not deprive people of what is rightfully theirs, nor spread corruption throughout the land."
86. "What Allah leaves for you is far better, if you truly believe. And I am not your keeper."
87. They said, "Shuayb, does your prayer command you that we abandon what our ancestors worshiped, or that we stop doing as we please with our wealth? You must be the tolerant and sensible one."
88. He replied, "My people, consider this: what if I have clear proof from my Lord, and He has blessed me with good provision from Himself? I do not wish to contradict you by doing what I forbid you from. I only seek to set things right, as best I can. My success comes only from Allah. In Him I trust, and to Him I turn."
89. "My people, do not let your hostility toward me lead you to suffer what befell the people of Noah, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih. And the people of Lot are not far from you."
90. "Seek forgiveness from your Lord, then turn back to Him in repentance. Truly, my Lord is Most Merciful, Most Loving."
91. They said, "Shuayb, we do not understand much of what you say. We see you as weak among us. If it were not for your family, we would have stoned you. You have no power over us."
92. He said, "My people, is my family more respected by you than Allah, whom you have cast behind your backs? Surely, my Lord encompasses all that you do."
93. "My people, continue doing as you wish, and I will continue as well. Soon you will know who will receive a humiliating punishment, and who is lying. Wait and watch — I am watching with you."
94. When Our command came, We saved Shuayb and those who believed with him, by Our mercy. But the mighty blast seized the wrongdoers, and they lay lifeless in their homes.
95. As if they had never lived there. Away with Midian, just as Thamud was swept away!
96. And certainly, We sent Moses with Our signs and clear authority.
97. To Pharaoh and his chiefs. Yet they followed Pharaoh's command, though Pharaoh's command was not right.
98. He will lead his people on the Day of Resurrection, bringing them down into the Fire. What a miserable place to be led into!
99. They were pursued by a curse in this world, and will be cursed again on the Day of Resurrection. What a terrible gift to receive!
100. These are stories of the towns We relate to you — some are standing, and some are mowed down.
101. We did not wrong them; rather, they wronged themselves. Their gods, whom they called upon besides Allah, did not help them at all when your Lord's command came. They only increased them in ruin.
102. Such is your Lord's punishment when He seizes towns steeped in wrongdoing — truly, His punishment is painful and severe.
103. Surely, in this is a sign for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day when all people will be gathered, a Day witnessed by all.
104. We delay it only until an appointed time.
105. On the Day it arrives, no soul will speak, except by His permission. Some among them will be miserable, and others happy.
106. As for those who are miserable, they will be in the Fire, where they will be sighing and wailing.
107. Remaining there as long as the heavens and the earth endure, unless your Lord wills otherwise. Truly, your Lord does whatever He wills.
108. And as for those who are happy, they will be in Paradise, remaining there as long as the heavens and the earth endure, unless your Lord wills otherwise — a gift that will never end.
109. So do not be in doubt about what these people worship. They worship nothing but what their forefathers worshiped before them. And surely, We will give them their full share without any reduction.
110. Certainly, We gave Moses the Scripture, but disagreements arose about it. Had it not been for a prior decree from your Lord, judgment would have already been passed among them. They remain in troubling doubt about it.
111. Your Lord will fully repay each of them for their deeds. He is fully aware of all they do.
112. So remain steadfast, as you have been commanded, along with those who have turned to Allah with you. Do not overstep the limits, for He sees clearly all that you do.
113. And do not incline toward those who do wrong, or the Fire will touch you. Then you will have no protectors besides Allah, nor will you be helped.
114. Establish prayer at both ends of the day, and during parts of the night. Good deeds surely erase bad deeds. This is a reminder for those who remember.
115. And be patient, for Allah never lets the reward of those who do good go to waste.
116. If only there had been, among the generations before you, people of virtue who forbade corruption on earth — except for the few whom We saved. But those who did wrong pursued their worldly pleasures, and became guilty.
117. Your Lord would never unjustly destroy towns whose people were committed to righteousness.
118. Had your Lord willed, He could have made all people into one community, yet they will always differ.
119. Except those upon whom your Lord has mercy — and for that He created them. Thus, your Lord's decree will be fulfilled: "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and humans, altogether."
120. We relate to you all these stories of the messengers, to strengthen your heart. In this, the truth has come to you, along with guidance and a reminder for the believers.
121. Say to those who do not believe: Work according to your position; surely, we are working.
122. And wait; we too are waiting.
123. To Allah alone belongs the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and to Him all matters return. So worship Him, and place your trust in Him. Your Lord is never unaware of what you do.
